deactivate assisted steering?

On my previous car, audi allroad, lots of guys removed the servotronic fuse/module (little square black block) under the driver side dash that was used for the assisted steering. The result was un-assisted power steering which was much tighter. in other words, it took more effort to turn the wheel (in a good way).
my question is:
does such a fuse exist in the touareg? can it be pulled like on the audi? anyone ever explore this?
tighter steering would be nice from time to time...

I've never seen such a fuse.

Just get a vag-com and disable it. You will also need to put it into 'service' mode so you get no dash lights.
If you had the time you could probbaly just remap it so it's on at low speeds (for parking etc) then off once over 5mph or so. Kinda how it works now but no complicated variable mapping on it.

Hotponyshoes, care to elaborate on the exact module and coding to disable? AFAIK, there is no dedicated module for the servotronic steering and I have never seen any measuring block showing the level of steering boost in any controller. I don't think such control exists, but I'd love to be proven wrong on this.

Module 44 (Steering Assist)
login using '40168'
into 'adaption'
alter the following channels:
ch2 (low speed assist)
0-Active
1-Variable (dependent on setting of 3)
2-Deactivated

ch3 (not available unless '1' is selected on ch2)
0= 0 or 2 chosen on ch2
1-variable (linked to speed and ch7 i think)
2-7 ammount of assistance (1min-7max)

ch4 (speed assist)
same as ch2 but for assistance at over 5mph

ch5
as ch3 but limited to assistance of 2-5

ch6
looks to be linked to the wheel size on the car?
higher numbers = wider tires (so more assistance given?)

ch7
some sort of high speed setting
higher the number = full assistance given at higher top speed.

ch8
somthing to do with the interaction between low and high speed settings.
I had a fiddle and managed to get it so i got full assistance at stationary and low speed but nearly nothing over about 10mph. not very nice in a heavy car like this though.

ch9 & 10
feedback? amount of road response the system lets back to the wheel i think.
Mine was at '2' changed to '3' and felt like a motorbike. never had the balls to put it up higher incase it dragged me off the road.

What vehicle did you do this on? At least the NA version of the Touareg don't have module 44, not that I have ever seen.

mines a 2007 (57plate) U.K. car.
3.2 petrol, V6 sport.
Can't see any reason why your's doesn't have it? Unless you don't have variable steering?
If you do you will also have to have a controller as all the variable steering is electric on the tregs (afaik)

I have the variable steering aka 'Servotronic' in my 2006 North America spec treg. No control for it as far as I have ever seen. :(

Would you mind adding your location (or at least country) to your user profile and vehicle year and spec in your sig? Since this is a world forum, it would help us all out if we know what market we have our various vehicle in. There are SO many vehicle build differences between markets.

As far as I was aware only the '07+ had servotronic (electric power assist steering), 04-06 had conventional variable power steering....I'll plug in my vag tomorrow and see if module 44 exists on mine

I have a 2007 and module 44 doesn't exist on mine.

I think that the relay to disable the power assist is towards the center (near the radio) of the dash on the Touareg. If it's too difficult to access, you could always disconnect the wires that power the servo at the rack.

Actually I just looked at my fuescard and there is a steering wheel icon on it. I would assume this is the servotronic fuse?

gonna bring this one back for a sec...
does anyone forsee a problem in driving around with the power steering fuse pulled? i yanked the no. 49 fuse on the left side which was labeled as such. wheel is much tighter and i like it, but don't want to hurt the car. anyone know for sure? i know the fuse is there for a reason blah blah blah but will it actually do any damage?
thanks!

Won't really do any harm as such.
If it takes more force to turn the steering you will wear the bearings at the top of the collum (by the steering wheel) faster than if you had less force on them but I suspect you will still take 'many' miles to actually were them out!.
You will also save a bit of abuse to the rack and tires as you won't be able to turn them so easy when the car is stationary so probbaly better in fact!

I've alwasy liked the weight of the steering in the Touareg - try a Ford Expedition.... a kitten could drive that car!
