I have songs on the HDD for which I no longer have any other copy. Is it possible to backup the HDD to SD, or to copy specific files? I have searched and found no answer, and a lot of fiddling hasn't led to success. I suppose I could attempt to remove the drive, but that seems extreme. Or maybe do an analog recording of the specific songs I'm looking for (although it might take hours to use the terrible navigation to find the missing tunes.) Any advice appreciated.

File transfer is one way only. Media to HDD.
To remove/copy from the HDD would require removal of the HDD and 'copying' the data via a PC interface.
I do not know of any other way (given my experience with VWs since 2008)

You would need a QNX emulator with version 650 SP1 in order to read the filesystem properly and not corrupt it. Not terribly difficult, but not simple plug and play either.

First of all thank you for the information!

Secondly, "a simple script can copy the files to the SD card" For us mere mortals who aren't coders, it's not a "simple" script!

But it is great information to build on and eventually have a solution. Again, thanks!

Here is a script that will print all files and directories on the RNS850 to a "dir.txt" file on your SD card. Copy all the files and folders from the zip to an empty SD card. "Run.sh" and "copie_scr.sh" should not be in any folder, but directly on the root. The same applies for the folders "_screens" and "_utils".

  • Wait 3-4 minutes after starting the RNS850 before inserting the SD card.
  • After 10 -15 seconds (some times longer) a VW logo will appear.
  • Twist or push any button on the RNS850 to remove the VW logo and the script will start
  • When its done, an upside down VW logo will appear.
  • Remove the SD card and put it in your computer.
  • There should be a file called "dir.txt" on the SD card.
  • Open it and search for your file, or upload it here to get help
  • If we find it, we can modify the script to extract the file
