I've read several reviews on-line citing numerous problems, but these were mostly on 2004's.

The one I am looking at is a 2006 V8 model. On my test drive the tire indicator was lit, I understand this to be a problem too.

I've also read about $1500 brake jobs and such.

My questions: What options should I avoid? Are there certain models better than others for maintenance? What service records should I expect on a vehicle with ~17k miles?

Thanks in advance for your responses.

I bought an 04 V8 last Sept. and have put over 30,000 miles on it so far. Only issues for us has been peeling buttons on the interior. You can expect to pay more for normal wear items such as oil changes and brake jobs. An oil change done by me costs $75.00 and about 2 hours time. Brakes are another big dollar item. But with that said I do have over 40,000 miles on the original brakes. This is more than I have ever gotten out of any other vehicle I have owned. The Touareg does cost more to maintain, The thrill you get driving it helps you forget about the higher costs.

The TPMS for the tires is not an issue. I had it on my 2004 and my current 2006 with no issues. It is that most people freak out then it goes off and do not realize that it goes off if there is more than a 5psi change in the tires. All they have to do is set the correct tire pressure when the tires are cold and set the system to reset.

Some folks don't do this and the problem is either they did not reset the system so it is still going off the old pressure settings or they have a nail in the tire and it is continueing to go down. I just put the correct psi in my tires and hit the relearn feature in the MFI and it is good.

As for brakes I got 34K on my 2004 before the front rotors and pads needed to be replace and almost 39K on my 2006 before the front rotors and pads needed to be replaced. Geoff at Alretta on this forum sells a great brake kit with everything you need for around $700 or so for all 4 wheels. You can then either do the brakes yourself or have someone who knows how to do them do it for much less than the dealer.

My 2004 had issues, but my 2006 has had almost zero issues. Both years were great vehicles.

Got a 2006 V6 with about 37k miles.

Front brakes changed at 35k via parts from Geoff at Alretta (very complete kit) - Cost about $400 plus huge help from VegasMatt (I was blathering to my client on the phone while he was breaking bolts). Rear brakes only half worn (I'll admit I tend to hit the brakes hard).

No other routine maintenance issues to speak of. Very solid. And that 'Reg gets plenty of tough off-road and on-road workout.

Oh, come on, I didn't brake any bolts. Just sockets :D

Does VW require a replacement o the front disks as well as the pads?

I remember somewhere on here someone saying that they had a vibration when applying the brakes and was wondering if you could just turn down the disks, or is a replacement in order?

Rotors are thin and designed to wear and be replaced when the pads are replaced. I would recommend changing them. Kinda pricy, but no choice.
