I live in Seattle and purchased a 2013 TDI exec trim in july. We have a second home in my birth state of idaho near sun valley, which we visit during the winter. I am wounding if anyone has experience with the push button start in cold weather. My other diesel vehicles have always required a wait period for the glow plugs to warm up before start. What should I expect from the VW?

Expect to push the button, with your foot on the brake pedal, and when the glow plugs are sufficiently warmed up, the motor will turn over and start. Could be 2,3, 5 or 7 seconds. Depends on the temp of the engine block and when the glow plugs are hot enough to fire off the fuel when injected. I'd get some local winterized grade fuel in the fuel tank and fuel lines, all of them, before shutting down if a cold snap is expected. Local stations near the resort should have winterized fuel this time of year.

Let the oil pressure get up, with the motor running 7-10 seconds, and drive off gently on the cold motor, until it's fully warmed up.

FWIW, I've never experience more than maybe a 1 second delay for the engine to turn over. That is at temps just above 0 F and the Treg sitting outside for 5-6 hours after a 60 minute drive. Also I've had it sit at the airport for days and arrive home in temps in the teens and haven't experience more than a 1 second delay for the glow plugs, though it was in covered parking.

New glow plug technology makes glow plug warm up nearly instant..the guage startup sweep takes longer than the glow plug procedure. The latest TDI tech atomizes the fuel anyways, so the chambers don't need to be all that warm for a start-up... Winters here hit sub 30 for a 3 week period so I'm well experienced (frustrated?) when it comes to cold weather issues.

Only caution to keep in mind is when travelling from south to North and considering the substantial range of these vehicles, the southern blend you buy will likely not be able to stay liquid in norther temps.

T1 on -16C delay of 4 seconds. That truly was the longest delay I expirienced
