Trip Report

On Sunday 16/7/06 a group of 5 Touaregs and their sundry associated people met at the Little Hartley Tea House, near Lithgow NSW for a day in the bush “Sunny Corner to Capertee”.
The group consisted of:

-Tamashek (Luke) and Mrs Tamashek (Joanne) in their white V6
-Singh in his white V6 and his mate Peter
-Matthew@f in his grey R5TDI
-Bobzed57 (Bob) and Mrs Zed (Gemma) with their very patient daughter Kristin (16) in their black R5TDI
-Moonan (Neil) and Mrs Moonan (Annette) with our friends Grant and Emma in the white R5TDI.

We (Neil, Annette, Grant & Emma) made a weekend of it – coming from Newcastle to spend Saturday night in the Blue Mountains (Blackheath) before the outing. It was very wet and foggy, promising a muddy 4wd experience the ext day. Sunday dawned bright and almost sunny so we set out to the meeting spot.
The tea house at Little Hartley has a sign promising “serious coffee”, and so that is what we had – along with breakfast. Many thanks to the people there for opening up early specially for us!

We let Matthew lead us on the scenic route to our official starting point via several derelict 19th century mining villages, and then the fun began…

Our route for the day came from Singh’s copy of '4wd Treks Close to Sydney' by Craig Lewis and Cathy Savage, and we followed the forestry tracks that got progressively steeper and rougher.
The country is wild and beautiful, with enough steep climbs, descents, and water crossings to meet our off-roading expectations. Singh, who had scouted the route for us, set a challenge of one particularly steep climb full of loose rocks and muddy clay with fallen timber close on both sides. Matthew had a go and came back down reporting success, and so we all tried. By the time Bob got into it, the track was bit more slippery than before and he gave us a bit of recovery experience helping him to the top.
Later in the afternoon we had practice changing a tyre – thanks again to Bob – and then got to the destination just a bit after dark.

For some that was the end of the fun, but others had more adventures:
Both Singh and us had the scary experience of a couple of stray cattle wandering out of the night onto the Great Western Highway as we passed at around 90km/hr;
Bob’s “lucky charm” struck for a third time as his family tried to check in to the historic pub at Mt Victoria (we were there intending to order a bite to eat). Just as we turned around to greet Gemma and Kristin who had walked in, the lights all went out!
The whole district was blacked out, and we had to drive up to Katoomba to find a café with the power on and have dinner.

All in all – a great time was had by everyone – Thanks to all who came, and again particularly to Singh for organising our route –again!

..You mean the field tuning demo for the "chipped" R5s... \:D/

Of course, you can't help but note that the R5s know how to look after their own - we didn't see a V6 try the up-hill towing exercise!

The tyre I broke was, surpisingly (to me anyway), repairable. $20 versus $300 for a new one.

As a precaution I rotated it to the back.
So... the Dunlops live to bog again! :giggle:
Well done! keep the $300 aside for a Cooper when those are worn out...

Hi Phaeton,
As the original "poster" I have no objection.
Be warned though that if you provide a link to it, people accessing the link will NOT be able to see the photos if they are not logged on members of CT (at least that is my experience)

Thanks Neil

I was thinking of linking to Bobs gallery as anyone can access it, like you said no one can access this thread unless they're members =; .

Check the video

Hey Luke

Got your video of the trip today. Great stuff, although there seems to be an inordinate amount of time spent on watching someone get their black R5 out of a bog. ;-)

The video has me keen to it again.

Thanks Bob

thanks Luke,
got my video today as well, nice work Indeed.

Was that made with mac software?

Good to see the R5's taking the lead  and doing all the 'bull work' :drunk: :drunk: If you listen very carefully you can just make out Singh in the background say
" I love the smell of diesel in the morning"
"Gee don't Matthew and Neil look great in their R5's, I wish I had their class, style and panache!" "that's it I am ordering a tdi"

Guys, happy to do it. Was hoping to give it to you a few weeks ago, but Singh provided some cool footage just before the Motor Show, so I wanted to re-edit the lot... and I completely screwed up the first effort (compression issues).

Anyway, after a few late nights I was so sick of the sight of you all that I just packaged it up and sent it! It isn't as polished as I'd like: the menus are a bit indifferent, some of the effects are annoying - and did you see all the cars turn into Hummers at the end!?! Bleeding widescreen! (Which I forgot to adjust for in that scene and didn't notice until I'd burnt all the copies... arghhhhh!)

I'll be doing a cleaned up version with any other excursion footage I have... once I get over the last effort.

Bob - sorry: it tested well with the audience (your wife asked for the footage...). I could have toned down the mocking music, I guess... :)

Matthew: Final Cut Pro 3 and iDVD 6 on an Apple Powerbook. I don't use it enough to do things efficiently... Wish I had more opportunity.

So when are we going again?

Got mine today, thanks Luke... Us country folks have to wait another day for the pack-camels to get here...

Summer is here and so is the silly season! Who wants a day at the beach or maybe a weekend up in the Barrington Tops?
Maybe everyone should chime in with dates between now and Christmas when you CAN spare a day or so - and we'll see if it is any better than the last attempt.

Looks like a great trip, we need to do something similar in Victoria

Bob, can I ask what that rookrack/basket is that your using ? Looks pretty solid, Im looking for something similar myself to hold a spare wheel for longer/off road trips; does it fit standard Treg roofracks or require special racks ? Thanks, Dave

Hey Luke - that was great! I only got to watch the video last night..
Unlike Bob, I thought the emphasis on the bogging and recovery operation was most appropriate! Marvellous what a rubber-band will do...
:)
