"Check Brake Lights" Insanity! Anyone Experienced it?

Greetings all. My 2004 V6 has an exciting and interesting new bug. The "check brake lights" warning light comes (with the accompanying beep) on frequently under certain conditions, and I wonder if anyone has experienced a similar problem or knows the likely root. The condidtions under which it happens are as follows: 1) The brake lights are fine and working normally; my bulbs have been replaced 2) it happens almost always when the Egg is at a stop or very close to arriving at one, after the car has been driven for about five minutes 3) it always happens when my foot is ON the brake pedal 4) it usually continues to happen two or 10 times on each trip -- under the above conditions.

When it happens multiple times, it can be rather maddening!:anger:

I have also experienced a "check headlight" warning. At the time, the driver-side xenon low-beam bulb appeared to be out. After a short drive, I rechecked the headlights, and the bulb was in fact working fine. There have been no headlight warnings since.

My thought is that these two problems are related and are a symptom of a malfunction in the warning system component(s) themselves, and that this should be covered by warranty.

If you have experienced this, please respond and let me know what your resolution was with your dealer -- and how you accomplished it. I have 53,500 miles on my Egg and am now under the RealDriver Platinum extended warranty. Now that the factory warranty is expired, I need to be able to point to a specific diagnosis in order to have the work covered.

Thanks!

Regarding your "check brake lights" I am pretty sure that it is a malfunction of your third brake light (at the top of your tailgate).
This is a known problem on early Touaregs. I had the same fault on my 04 Touareg and since the dealer replaced the brake light (not only bulbs can be changed), problem is solved.

Good luck.

It is the third brake light for I am going through the samething at the moment. I am waiting until it completely goes out for they won't do anything about it other wise since I can go for a few days w/o it having an issue. They third light is all LED's so you have to replace the whole unit just as you would with the turn signals in the mirrors. It also houses the nozzle for the rear washer.

...the 3rd breaklight is made up of a series of LEDs...if one of them is not working, the brake warning comes on. The brake light will look fine from a distance but on closer inspection you'll brobably realize one or more of the LEDs are out. Had this same challenge a while back

Rumors @ a local dealer revealed the fixture (3rd Light) on older Treg's has not having enough Amperature capacity, as power is distributed to all the lights, when
the brake pedal is pressed, therefore sometimes not causing enough current to reach
the 3rd light, giving a "Check Light" message!

Not hard at all to do. I am waiting for mine to come it so I can replace it. It was not covered under my extended warranty and I was not paying the gross amount the dealer wanted. I am replacing it myself.

Yes, it is accessed by removing the panel. Pry it from the upper portion of the panel. Meaning the area closest to the top of the hatch. There are 5 hook type tabs that hook into the the metal. Then it is just double sided tape holding the rest of it on. I broke the tabs off of mine before I realized how it was attached. After that it is just three nuts holding the spoiler to the hatch. Once you remove that you can disconnect the wire from the light and then remove the light from the spoiler. The rear washer runs through the light assembly, so you will need to disconnect the washer line from it as well. I am not sure on that since I have not yet removed mine.

Funny enough, I think mine is doing something of this nature now. I have the check lights indicator on and everything I check is working. I'll have to go out and check on the high mount stop light when I get a little help around.

Though I have one other thing that I was puzzled about as well, I pulled the back inner tail lights just for ****s and giggles and noticed a bulb missing on both sides... Anyone shed any light on what's supposed to be there if anything at all?

yes, pun intended.

The lower left bulb port is vacant, and should go to the lower right portion of the red housing as looking directly at the picture in question.

Is there really supposed to be nothing there, or did ninjas steal meh lights?

Am I supposed to have them, I'm going to guess no since I think I remember reading it was more of a European thing?

Found the bugger causing the problems, luckily it is a reverse light and not the high mount going out on me. Now anyone know a replacement bulb number that works for them, we can't get them through work. ( i.e., autozone )

It's one of those nice 5 digit European numbers of course, I foresee an upreventabee stealership visit in the near future.

No, not supposed to be there, not a requirement here. People have installed them though.
Anything required much to do that other than just installing whatever bulb number there is there? Is there a rear fog switch that needs installing etc?

Thanks for the info btw guys much appreciated.

Yes, no wiring there for them at all and you need a different headlight switch. There are a few threads on this if you do a search for it. To me it is not worth all the hassle to install it since it is not a requirement here in the states.

Bringing this thread back from the dead for my first post.
I've got the "please check lights". The only thing I can find is that the brake lights on the hatch are not coming on, only the running light filament of the same bulbs. It is a dual filament bulb, so I'm assuming these are brake lights? Can someone confirm that there are in fact brake lights on the hatch portion of the red-covered lights?
I've also got the hatch glass that won't open... VCDS will open it though.
So my guess is the hatch wiring harness chafing at the hinge, unless someone has any other ideas?

Could the third brake possibly have a fault, even if all the LEDs come on??
For obvious reasons, I cannot say for certain, but based on your hatch glass problems, I would assume your problem is going to be in the wiring to the third brake light.

VCDS doesn't tell you anything?

The strips in the bumper don't light up, do they?
Those are reflectors.

ACTUALLY, now that I just checked my auto-scan log, I found this-
00131 - Outside Door Handle Illumination/mirror Light Driver Side
012 - Electrical Fault in Circuit
I seem to remember that working, but I'll have to check it out in the morning, one of my only faults that didn't come up as "intermittent"
