My Japanese import has the usual stereo system other than the radio has a much smaller band width, I have managed to buy a NZ new stereo from a similar age and model that is being dismantled.
Question: Can I just swap the stereos over or does the dealer need to change any security settings etc so the car recognises the alternate system?

You would need the radio code from the radio you purchase. We also do not know what radio they put into the Touareg for Japan and whether it uses the same plugs. Can you post photos of the radio, front and rear?

Thanks, I have now spoken with the VW service dept locally and they say that with the chassis number of the car that the new stereo came from it won't be a problem to change.
