Hi All
Question Re: Center propshaft bearing
Just returning home with approx 5 miles to go, coming off the motorway up the slip road when I lifted off the throttle got a clunk and then a small vibration throu the center arm rest, slowed pulled over as I thought I may have had a tyre go, looked around all seem fine pulled away slowly and could still feel the vibration but not there on a steady throttle, Drove the 5 miles home at less than 30mph suspecting center bearing, Just removed the plate covering the bearing and it is detached from the shaft and shaft moves up and down.
Is the center carrier bearing a seperate part to buy on its own or does it come mounted on the shaft (expensive option !!) ?
I would guess at it being a dealer part only and its Sunday tomorrow
Thanks for any help/ info
Dave

Yup, the whole enchilada is the only way to service this in the aftermarket and it only comes from VW... I recently had to replace this item and that was expensive... for the warranty company!

As far as I know for you in England, there is no other practical option.

Cheers!

Seems from here maybe not that bad...

$500 shaft from North West USA
- Local shipping $...Say $75 =
$425 + Air Freight to Ireland...maybe $675-$700.
+ they want to get your old one back

If I were you I would call them Monday morning and see what cold be worked out.

You have seen their name and phone number?

Weekend nothing happening so I am just covering all bases, hard to belive but $700.00 it might be still cheaper in the USA,One would think a universal joint would be better just wish I owned a metal shop, but it looks like I am going to get screwed by vw, assholes:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

I can help ship it to ireland for a whole lot less and it is delivered in two days with DHL.
I had a new one put one recently but do not remember weight.
If weight is between 30 and 40 lbs cost of shipping will be between $125-$150
That will give you a pretty good idea

Centre Carrier Bearing

Just covered 65K in my 55 reg, Centre bearing Shot completely in the South of France, Managed to carry out a temporary repair just good enough to get me home, Couldn't face 12 hrs on the back of a breakdown Truck. Anyway when back in the UK, rang 2 VW dealers before I spoke to one that was conversant with Tuareg's, In fairness all 3 said a complete prop shaft assembly would be required. Quoted around ÂŁ650 + Vat. Having just replaced the Clutch and Dual Mass flywheel I was not pleased. Anyway Whilst surfing the net I managed to find an OEM Centre carrier Bearing, ÂŁ121.74 + vat totaling ÂŁ140 inclusive of postage. . Ordered it and now fitted within 3 days. Prop removal and separation was a little tricky but if you've ever done a drive shaft CV joint before you'll be fine. Carrier Bearing just failed on mine at just over 100K Km...

VW quoting >€1100 for the replacement shaft and bearing

After a bit of a web search I found these nice people who were willing to provide the bearing only for ÂŁ90 and ÂŁ10 shipping from Northern Ireland to Dublin :)

For anyone considering doing a DIY job or with regards to having a nice mechanic to swap it out, it involves splitting the shaft by the CV joint, cleaning the beaing up to find the retaining clip, popping it out and then reversing the process.
There following is link from a US site which supplies replacement shafts and has a little write up about the tools and proceedures to pop the shaft...

ok the dealer just serviced mine because i complained about some squeeking noise when take off from a dead stop...

i had no idea that drive shaft needed to be replaced... would someone tell me what the symptoms might be when the shaft goes out?

Generally when the carrier bearing goes, it is a drastic change that you can't miss....

You'll hear and feel this thumping from under the centre console when you get above a certain speed, for me it was about 30 kmph. And it only gets worse with speed.

If you can get under the chasis to look at the shaft, then there's a CV joint about a third of the way along from the front transfer box, and after the joint you find the carrier bearing bolted up to the underneath of the body.
You should be able to see / feel some play if it is gone as it consists of an outside housing (U shaped) to attach to the body, rubber middle vibration damper and in the centre a bearing on the shaft (think of concentric rings).

The squeaking sound may be a precursor to the bearing going but I didn't hear it.

cheers,
diarmuid.

My prop shaft bearing on my 2004 VW Touareg V6 went out. I got my call from the dealership, will cost me $1800.32 total. No labor included because they will put that for free. I had my touareg for only 3-4 years and its no longer under warranty. I call VW of America and they said they're not responsible for this happening. I explained to them that I feel its a premature repair, my car has 77k. I thought bearings shouldn't be worn out? Let alone the prop shaft. They said I have to replace the whole darn thing. I sent a complaint to the National Highway Safety about this and I'm thinking of making more noise about this because I see this is a common problem for everyone before. Is there a cheaper way to get a part, especially here in Hawaii?

I bought one refurbished from Colorado driveshaft for $450. Takes about 3 hours to install and any competent mechanic can do that. That said paying more than $600 is money pissed out the door.
I hope I just saved you $1200

Cheaper alternative for centre bearing replacement

 My centre bearing's just gone - on the way home from having the EGR cooler replaced, that's after having the EGR replaced, and the Comfort module replaced and the heated rear seats replaced and...
I'm not impressed with the ÂŁ968.06 quote for the new prop shaft I have to say. However - there's a company in Coventry - Dave Mac Propshafts - (024) 7668 3239 who'll pick up (TNT) replace centre bearing and return for ÂŁ204.45 all in. As the car's at the dealers I'm going to get them to remove and re-fit; probably expensive, but I've not the time to go move it to somewhere cheaper.

Great solution for treg drive shafts.

Hello All,

My center bearing went out on me a few weeks back. After doing a lot of searching I found a New GKN drive shaft which I think is the O.E. manufacture for Touareg and the Cayenne, from Wholesale Import Parts for $795.00 with free shipping. I got great service, I highly recommend them. Here is the web add. Wholesaleimportparts.com.

Colorado Driveshaft refurbishes the OEM shafts with the upgraded bearing and bushing and they balance it before sending it to you. With two way next day shipping included (you have to send your core back to them) the total was under $600.

Touareg Propshaft problems solved!

There are 2 different propshafts fitted to VW Touaregs as follows:
One that fits just the 2.5 R5 TDI & 5.0 V10 TDI which is 1185.2mm long compressed and one that is 1246.4mm long that fits all other models.

You can buy the centre bearing as a separate part but it's a bit tricky to fit unless you know what you are doing, also the CV joint behind the bearing tends to stiffen up which is a cause for the bearing failure, so check the CV joint before fitting a replacement bearing. There are some aftermarket copy bearings about which I would not advise using as they are not very good.
You don't need to buy a new shaft from your dealer, speak to these guys below, they are the specialists for sourcing genuine replacements:

Genuine replacement bearings and complete driveshafts / propshafts for all Touaregs are available from:

Replace Prop Shaft Bearing for $75.00

I just replaced my drive shaft center carrier bearing for $75.00.

I didn't want to shell out the money for a rebuilt shaft when only the bearing was bad. Also I figured I will probably have to replace one again during the life of this car, so I better figure out how to do it.
If you're mechanical at all and have a gear puller and a vise, you can most likely do this repair as well.

That's a very good post.
