I HAVE THE CD NAV RIGHT NOW. IS THERE ANY MAJOR DIFFERENCES IF I WERE TO PURCHASE THE DVD NAV.

There is a massive difference in map detail. A friend has the DVD, I have the CD. The CD version I have, does not show a lot of the major roads in northern Alberta, where I live. The DVD shows them all, down to the local service roads. I haven't seen the screen to know the detail. I heard there is a new system coming out that uses fixed memory. Don't know when but it will dominate.

No difference on my system. It might have something to do with the age of your disk.

The harddrive based navigation system is called RNS510 and has been available for 3-4 months now. Besides it being harddrive based it has touchscreen and 3D navigation.

True, a DVD disk will of course cover a much larger area and therefore you won't have to change disk. But I haven't seen any difference in the map detail.

yeah, I drove from home Grande Prairie, Alberta, Canada to Banff, Alberta Canada. I don't know if you've heard of Banff, but It is one of the most famous Canadian parks. The map shows neither the only highway south from Grande Prairie, nor one of the few highways in Banff. The nav system wanted me to add around 1000km to my trip because of this. My friends DVD system shows roads to local parks that aren't on most paper maps.

P.S as far as I know there is only one disc for Canada. Thats almost 10,000,000KM2 to map. it's not surprising the detail is sparse.

Here in Europe, we have a different disc for each country.. Together with the discs you get a "major roads of europe disk". This disk is very sparse with details and only covers highways etc.

A bit odd you don't have CD's that cover the areas in detail. You should have a different disk for each state.. But again thats TeleAtlas for you (the producers of the mapdata)..

^^ Wow, this would be nice! Imagine the possibilities! and detail!

Sorry, by states I meant provinces and or Terretories..And I just find it strange that TeleAtlas doesn't cover this in detail on a CD version. Canada is after all one of the biggest countries in the world..

But Yes, It could be cool to have Blu-ray Navigation together with a x terabyte harddrive.. Hehe, fit the whole world in 3D on one disk (well almost)..

Well hd-dvd will never happen :) It is a dead format...
I would expect either getting away from discs all-together and going harddrive or a combination of both...

My dvd system in the Acura from 2004 did great when I drove up to Canada. Went to some lakes a few hours north of Toronto and pretty much had coverage the whole time even though it was a really small place.

The new VW Nav system is hd with a flash port :)

I upgraded my '04's CD to an '06 DVD system. Everything you hear is true. There is one area where the CD system really beats the DVD:

On entering an address, the CD system asks for CITY first. It then displays a list of streets from which you may choose.

On entering an address, the DVD systems REQUIRES INPUT OF HOUSE NUMBER THEN STREET FIRST -- then you are presented a list of cities from which to choose.

1. YOU MUST KNOW THE EXACT USPS NAME FOR THE STREET YOU ENTER. Here in greater Philly, entering "Lancaster" gives you (hypothetically) Lancaster Ave, Lancaster Ave E, Lancaster Ave W, Lancaster St, N Lancaster St, S Lancaster St, E Lancaster Rd, W Lancaster Rd, N Lancaster Rd, SE Lancaster Rd, Lancaster Pike, Lancaster Ally, Lancaster Blvd AND ON AND ON AND ON.

God help you if you don't know which one you need because if you guess wrong? BACK TO THE BEGINING YOU GO AND DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN!

After you pick the street, you are permitted to select from a list of jurisdictions that include Post Office names as well as political divisions such as township names.

2. Searching for a Place does not let you type in the name directly, you must knowen zee properen kategorization, dumkopf! So typing in "St Joseph Medical Center" may or may not give you a hit.

Lesson learned? Get the address from a piece of mail or look it up in the phone book before you leave for your trip.
