Cat Bypass Pipes

woo hoo! Done in an hour and 5 minutes. It helps having a friend with a lift in his barn. :) As others have said before, the sound is much better.

A tip when doing the mod... When trying to get the top bolt off the old cats, get the longest extension you can find and come in from the top. My buddy had one that was roughly 3 1/2 feet it seemed to save us hours. Also when putting on the new cat bypass pipes, mount them so the bolts come down toward you and the nuts go up (opposite of how they are stock).

Edit-> others have complained about the pipes hitting the cross brace. I took my time snugging up all the bolts including the coupling bolts and was able to snug it all up so it's far enough away from the brace so it doesn't rattle.

here's the final pic.

Nope. The other thing is that if there were, there are 4 cats on a 'reg. They just need to look further up the pipes. You can see one of the two left on just north of the bolts. I'm pretty convinced that even if there were emissions checks, you'd still pass the ol' plug in the tailpipe. The regs are pretty lean burning engines.

Armando, the pipes sound great. They add a little of the throaty sound but not too much. When you get on it, they sound fantastic. Fun for tunnels, overpasses and downtown between the big buildings. The flapping sound that some complain about is normal and honestly is accentuated a bit but with the deep sound, it sounds fine. I'll see if I can record it and post it.

David, I appreciate all your research and if you did a bit more research you'd find that there are 4 catalytic converters on a Touareg. The second set (in the aft that are replaced) help reduce the noise the engine makes by restricting the engine. Since the Touareg is considered a luxury car, I believe the developers felt that most people didn't want the excess noise. By removing 1/2 of the cats onboard, there poses no more problems to the environment than any other V8 with two cats. Honestly, there were many V8 cars that exist without cats. Go hang out in a Mustang forum. That's the first thing most of them do before they put headers and straight pipes in.
With the new technology VW has introduced in these cars, I would venture and guess that my v8 with 2 cats is cleaner than the old '70's Buicks or Fords still driving around town.

Does any one have this setup with a SOUND CLIP or VIDEO at all? I got rid of my stock mufflers and did magnaflows and didn't make much of a difference. I want a v8 sound but still be able to drive on the highway without a headache. Thanks.

Cat bypass pipes

I am running the Fabspeed pipes on my 2008 V8. Easy install, better throttle response, 20 extra hp and slightly throaty (not noisy) exhaust note. AND it just passed Massachusetts emission inspection!

I am a bit of a luddite in the a/v dept., but I'll try!

FYI-- I avoid noisy exhausts. The only time you get a hint is under foot to the floor mode.

Stay tuned.....................

It doesn't even have to be a video. Just a sound clip of it idling, revving up, and if you want(this is the optional part), you taking off floored, while someone else is taping.

I will try to make a set as well after Waterfest. Need to get stainless flanges cut and a reducer pipe and should be good to go. Not sure what Mufflers to use in Rear thought. Might try the Vibrant ones all 304 stainless., with 5x9 case. Believe the magnaflow polished is just 304 shell and rest is 409...anyone know?

Any idea on pricing :D

I'm in York... so i'm not far away at all.

I've got the FabSpeed bypass pipes on my 2004 V-8 as well.

Just passed the California emissions test with huge margins. The visual exam was no problem...the tech just looked closer to the exhaust manifold and saw what he needed to see.

My wife drives ours quite often and the noise is no problem as there is no additional noise until you put your foot into it which she does not do.

Ok, it is now your turn for me to hound ;).

First question: What difference did you notice?
2nd question: Why did you do it?
3rd question: Are you using your stock suitcase muffler with the cat bypass pipes, and if so..
4th question: Sound clip? (this really should of been question#1 :))

Actually, it is on turbocharged vehicles where, any kind of back pressure in the exhaust system is evil!

You want as little bends as possible, and where there must one be, the less curvature of the pipe that you can get away with the better. 0 restriction would be your goal, but impossible to achieve.

anyone have a soundclip/vid of the Fabspeed 2nd Cat bypass pipes ONLY? I am hoping this simple mod will make my '08 T2 V8 sound like my previous '08 S4.... Anyone? Thanks!

I do..Stock muffler with cat bypass pipes only ;) .I'm on a lousy laptop now, so too lazy to dig up my private youtube link. Link works only on here, and not to the open youtube world ;). Shouldn't be too hard to find on here...Let me know if you can't.

It actually sounds more aggressive with the foot on it than I expected, so there is no way that I'm taking the OEM muffler out for now. Mind you, with a light foot, it almost purrs the same as before. Just wish I had a better quality camera and microphone to give it some justice. People at work and friends complimented me on how the egg sounds.

little late to the game on this...been looking at the Fabspeed bypass pipes for my 04 V8. Not too mechanicaly inclined myself you could say, but do have some friends with a lot of know how. I was wondering if there would be any difference bewteen installing these or having my local hot rod institutie bend and weld something on instead...pretty sure it would be cheaper than the $580, jsut wonder if there is anything special about those pipes besides being designed to go right on.

While I'm at it, should i just take all the cats off? No exhaust emission tests out here in South Dakota!
