Carrier Bearing Replacement Cost

Yesterday I heard a gnarly noise coming from my center console. Along comes Clubtouareg to the rescue! As I was stopped in a parking lot I searched and found the carrier bearing failure posts on my phone! Because of this site I instantly realized this was tow worthy in order to save my drive shaft.

I towed it to a local euro repair shop here in Nashville and sure enough that was the problem. During their diagnosis I called my local dealer and asked for a price for the replacement. They quoted me $350. This afternoon the local place called me and quoted me $750 for the repair. My questions are:

A. Is $750 a reasonable rate for this repair?
B. Is $350 likely a misquote? I'm trying to avoid towing it from one place to another to find out they messed up the pricing with me.

Thanks for the help fellas!

I have read here a couple of different times that if you get the bearing replaced you have to rebalance the driveshaft. I am really new to the Touareg but it is what i have been reading. There is a carrier bearing on Ebay that is suppose to be a quick replacement with no rebalance needed.

Converting UK prices to dollars I'd have said a new VW drive shaft would normally retail at over US $1,000 plus a couple of hours labour to remove old and fit new.

Yes, one or two people on here have used this Vertex kit successfully but note, a VW dealer will only fit a new, VW supplied drive shaft. They do not refurb or fit kits.

You'll need to go to an independent for either the carrier bearing to be replaced or to get the Vertex kit fitted.

Just to throw my 2 cents in, I was just told today that my carrier bearing was shot and that it was part of the drive shaft and to replace them it will cost me $2200. And this is from a shop that I respect and has treated me right, but I feel that this price is a bit high.

Of course it is high.

If you read this thread from start to finish you will know that and how to do it cheaper if you want.

i replaced my carrier bearing myself, purchase the bearing on ebay...probably a mistake....you have to make alinement marks everywhere in order to be sure you put it back together in the right order to avoid having to rebalance it. it is a pain in the butt to get everything apart and back together again. if you take this project on, be sure to purchase a quality part, mine still makes a high pitch whine on cold mornings for the first mile.
