Hi Guys,
Wondering if someone can help me. I have an 05 V8 petrol with 180,000 km on it. It went in to have the 180K done perfect, & came out with problems. First noticed when powering into a roundabout, it just lost all power, for up to 3 seconds. It was very intermittent, but as it got hotter, it got worse. The worst trip we had was a 120 km trip where it faltered in excess of 100 times!
Nothing shown when put on a diagnostic, by 2 different dealers. Yesterday towing my 3.5t boat, it started to play up, then totally failed. Stuck on the side of the highway!! Rang VW dealer & he said it sounds like the car went into "limp home" mode???
Got towed there & hopefully will get some answers next week. When it played up with the big load, it would start to miss in 6th, I'd drop it back to 5th & it was slightly better, but had to go to 4th before the missing dropped out, but then total failure. VW has had no answers food me over the last 3 months, so hoping someone might have some ideas.
Thanks for your time,
Tony

coil packs it sounds like. Easy and cheap fix. disconnect the conectors. Pry the coil packs of with a wide flat blade screwdriver. Pop new coils on and connect the fittings again and done.

If it is the coil packs, get your dealer to check if the car has had them replaced under the recall. They will be able to check by using your VIN. Got mine done by Cricks last year. Saved about $1000. Had them put in new NGK iridium spark plugs at the same time.

Only some coil packs are being replaced by VW, not all.

They are about US$50 apiece.

The OP's V8 is an '05 so I can't see why it wouldn't be included unless they have been replaced before. The dealer will do an inspection to check the date of manufacture before ordering the new coils. If it's already at the dealers a 2 minute phone call is all it will take.

I'm not saying this car is not included. My even older 2003 was.

What I am saying is that not all coils are being replaced as it is a specific batch they are tracking down and replacing.

So in my case 4 coils were duffers and 2 weren't: I had a deal on the two that were ok so I got a new set of six.
