I'm having a bit of an issue with the wiring for the OEM hitch kit I had installed in my 2005 Touareg.
A little back story first. I purchased my Touareg used about a year ago and it didn't have a hitch kit in it. So I shopped around and looked at a few different options, and after reading through various posts on here and a few other places I talked to the nearest dealer to me, which is a 3 hour drive away, and got them to match parts prices with what I could find online. So I figured I would get the OEM kit installed since the price difference vs headaches seemed to be in the favor of the OEM kit. I had this done in mid-June this year.
Fast forward to a couple of weeks ago and I tried to rent a Uhaul to bring some furniture to my parents. This is the first time I've tried to use the hitch. I went to the Uhaul location the day before to have my lights tested, to make sure that I wouldn't have any issues and the Uhaul technician plugs his tester in and we find out everything works fine, except there are no brake lights. So the Uhaul tech, being a nice guy, pulls out a red light tester, the type you clamp to a ground and then touch to a lead and it lights up if there is any signal running through it, and he tests all of the pins on the 7-pin pollack connector on my Touareg. Everything works again except the brakes.
So then I read up a bit on here and found that some people had issues with the lights not working properly with LED lit trailers, such as what Uhaul uses. So I found another local company that had trailers with normal bulbs and drove over there to test. They had 7 pin connectors on their trailers, but only 4 pins had connectors in them. Same exact problem.
So I called the service manager and asked if there was anything he could think of off hand that would cause the issue. He said I'd have to bring it in. So I'm taking a day of vacation this week and heading up there to get it checked out. My question is, does anyone have any idea what might be the issue? I just don't want to drive 3 hours there and find out they have to order a part and I'll have to come back again later. I've already had to come back several times for other issues that should've been taken care of the first time.
I took it to a trailer sales place that was suggested by the local trailer rental outfit and the tech there tested my set up and came to the same conclusion as the Uhaul tech. But he said that in his experience when he's seen the issues going from 7 to 4 pins there's a junction box somewhere that maps the brake lights to the tail lights and that's usually bad. Has anyone heard of anything like this?
