Bluetooth audio

Hi,

This is my first posting as a new member and a new owner of 2010 Touareg TDI. Awesome vehicle, and every day I learn something new about my Touareg!

One problem I had with my Touareg, which I thought you all might find interesting, has to do with the Bluetooth audio option found in nav setup. Basically it doesn’t work even though you’re given the option to activate the Bluetooth audio? Bluetooth audio is a nice option if your cell phone can play music or can stream music from applications like Pandora.

I was told the reason it doesn’t work is, because the Touareg’s nav sys uses “high-end” software. All models below the Touareg with a similar nav system, with the Bluetooth audio option do work, or so I was told by the VW mechanic. I always thought high-end meant more not less?? Besides that little inconvenience everything else about the Touareg TDI is great!! :D

I have a 2010 V6 TDI. My Bluetooth Audio Works... It depends on the phone and whether it supports the same bluetooth profile. I use a HTC Touch Cruise. Dealer told me the same thing when I was trying to get all my features to work. When I asked for assistance getting the voice activation to work they said it wouldn't work with my phone(it does). Same thing about the Blutooth Audio, and a few other features... I had to go back and explain to them how to get it to work properly...

That's good news! My phone (Samsung Moment) works fine with voice recognition, that's why I was puzzled that the audio didn't. Please educate me on how you got your Bluetooth audio to work and any other features. If I can get mine to work than I will pass on your instructions to my dealership.

Thanks,

Good News and Bad...

What I found is that there are 3 versions of the Bluetooth module. And only one of them supports the Audio. I beleive that the Tregs use the 9w3 which does not support the Bluetooth Audio. I had a Sub added to my system by an installer friend of mine who also "added" a 9w2 retrofit to my system. I did not know this until I found the following information and asked him about it. It is the retrofit that allows me to use the Audio.

Bluetooth types
Volk-L can be dealer installed but is only talk and receive. You cannot place outgoing phone calls or show phone book capability in the MFD (the highline multifunction display on the instrument cluster). This was an option on earlier TDI. It does not interface with the VW RNS 510 GPS nav system.

9w2 lets you talk and receive but there is no phone book capability. You can still use voice control through your mobile phone to place outgoing calls, if equipped. It also has A2DP (bluetooth streaming music capability). An example of A2DP is wirelessly playing music directly from your iphone over the stereo.
You can find kits on ebay to retrofit 9w3 but these are grey market parts. In other words, people from other countries sell OEM VW parts that will work on your car but will work just as if it were equipped from the factory. *Make sure the bluetooth module part number is compatible with your car! There was a change from 2009 and 2010 - white vs. red display part numbers.

9w3 lets you talk, receive, has phone book, place outgoing calls, and has voice control. It does not support A2DP. All 2010 and newer in the US have it. Most don't have the correct coding to show the phone book over the MFD. If you have a 2010 and do not see this option, change the coding for it to show up. Since it's a brand new car the dealer should have set this for you. This will not work with 2009 and earlier. It also has more options for audio settings.

Does 9W2 show Caller ID info on the MFI? A2DP would be a big bonus for me over phonebook capability.

I can do the same, but I like a good variety and Pandora is awesome. Plus I don't want to pay for syrus radio, only their traffic updates for gps.

Is this where you found your information vandamme23 http://www.myturbodiesel.com/1000q_how_to/a5/VWbluetoothFAQ.htm? I have the nav sys, and my phone book only shows on the nav screen not the MFI. I will have to do some more research to see what if any changes there would be, other than the Bluetooth audio, if I switched to the 9w2? The A2DP would be a bonuse for me as well, but not if I have to sacrifice something else.

I will also be adding a propane kit my friend helped design made by Fire em up. They have had a huge success with large diesel trucks around the world and European small cars. My friend said the average mpg increase on the Jetta is 50%!! 20% propane 80% ULSD equals nearly 100% fuel burn and less NOx, which should equal less AdBlue (urea) needed. Also because it burns cleaner it's better for the engine and the environment. After it's installed I'll post the results.

Yeah, that's my site, myturbodiesel.com. It's mostly VW TDI but lots of stuff applies to other VW as sell. If you have a Touareg TDI feel free to post there as well. vandamme23, please reference stuff when you quote large sections - you wouldn't want me taking your work without at least a acknowledgement so why would you take mine, especially when it's free anyways?

The touareg bluetooth module may be slightly different (I doubt it) and the upcoming 9w7 (like 9w3 but with streaming audio so it combines the best of both older systems) should come out in the fall. Or like any other tech you can wait and buy an older system at a discount. aaa247, check your PM.

Hello all, new to this and my Tourareg (got it yesterday). I have a 2010 V6 and want to use the Bluetooth audio to play music from my iPhone 4S. I got it to work to make calls but can't seem to play music. How does one find out what sort of Bluetooth I have?

I sync the phone with the Bluetooth then hit the phone button n the steering wheel, the voice comes on asking what I want to do. I am not sure what I would do next to play music.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks
Greg

With my Bluetooth setup (2011 T3 Treg with satnav etc) I just select 'media'/input and then Bluetooth. The steering wheel controls then control the music app in my iPhone4 and streams to the car stereo.
You can only control track forward/back and play/pause, if you want full control and selection of playlists etc then you need to connect via an iPod cable in the glovebox.
The Treg sort of sees the iPhone as two separate devices - a phone and a media player.
As a phone you use the 'talk' or 'Phone' button and up/down/left right on the steering wheel (or voice control) to select a name from the iPhone address book (shows in MFD)
To stream music from it you select 'Media' and then Bluetooth to select the iPhone (once it has paired) which then starts playing automatically.
One thing that really impresses me about the Treg is that as soon as I jump in the car and turn the key (no keyless ignition down under!) the iPhone automatically connects and streams my Tunein Internet Radio (BBC Radio Two) to the car stereo - sweet! :)

Angry, that's for the reply. This may sound stupid but where do you select media and Bluetooth? Like I said I just got this thing a few days ago (no manual...). I should add that it does not have the navigation system.

Thanks
Greg

Greg,
The 'Media' control is a button under the touch-screen, sorry but it sounds like you have a (510?) different stereo/media unit to mine (810?)

USP45nh,

I just got a 2010 as well and wes looking for a solution to stream bluetooth audio and found this from Spain. It looks like it will work replacing the current bluetooth 9w3 with the latest 9w7 unit so you can stream.

VW Bluetooth Kit RNS 510 RCD 510 9W7

I am going to have to wait a couple of weeks to order mine but will update when I do.
might sound silly, but I wonder if this will fit the T2 with RNS510...the ad says Touareg 2012 on, but in Europe the 2010 was the "T3"

Our 2013 with Nav supports streaming audio with issues. Every now and then the audio stops and then restarts. I also lose track control so I cannot change up or down tracks. Don't know how the change playlists.

I told the service writer during the 10k checkup and he said they called VW and the iPhone 5 is not supported! WTF? How can you not support one of the most popular phones in the world?

The problem is with Apple, not with VW. Apple is really bad about maintaining backwards compatibility with their services (In this case bluetooth) I have an iphone 4s and I have issues with the audio not fully syncing with the car which either leaves me with no music, or where I can't control the music over the radio.

The first step is to disable and re-enable the bluetooth on the phone. If that doesn't work, I reboot the phone and that will always cure the issue.

This also happened with an Alpine head unit in my old truck, so it's not isolated to VW.

And no I am not going to switch to an Android phone any time soon.

Dear All, i just got a Vw Touareg 2010 V6 r line, and I’m facing a problem with the Bluetooth that it doesn’t connect to my iPhone XS, so I’m wondering that if there’s any update it can be done to the Bluetooth software or any solution so my iPhone XS can be connected to the car Bluetooth, keep in mind that my audio device in the car is RNS 510.
Please help! Thanks in advance
