Auto Gear Lever Swap?

Hi,

I am looking at purchasing a very late model series one Touareg and having driven both series one and two, only one thing spoils the series one car... The T shaped gear selector!

I cannot justify the extra cost of a series two right now, and was wondering if the series two gear selector; the one that looks more like a normal manual shift lever, can be retro fitted to the series one car?

Does anyone on here know if this has ever been done, or any reasons why it cant be retro fitted?

I am quite happy to do the swap myself and carryout any modifications to the trim if required.

Its not just the looks, its the feel of the latter stick; and I do change my auto, manually quite regularly...

Can anyone help please??

I have done the usual google search, etc. and get no replies close to what I am asking...

The forums and VW do not refer to any Touareg by Series.

So to be clear, do you have a Generation 1 facelift car which we all know as a T2 and are you thinking about fitting a gear lever from a Generation 2 Touareg which we call a T3 and, post facelift, a T4.?

The VW dealership here in Doncaster, refers to them as series one, series two, and series three etc...

I have no seen any threads where anyone has fit a gear selector knob/handle from a T3 and up on a T1 or T2. Not sure if it's doable or feasible.
I have read where someone had replaced a T3 or T4 knob with one from a 2021 Tiguan though.

The Generation 1 cars - T1 and T2 - have a 6 speed Aisin box whereas the Generation 2 cars - T3 and T4 - have an 8 speed Aisin box.

I don't know if this would make a difference if you still wanted to try putting a Gen 2 gear lever in a Gen 1 car.

If you haven't seen this thread do take the time to read it before you buy:

One of the posters lists the comparable Porsche model numbers in his signature if you decide to go that route with your knob!
