Here's a better, close-up image of the Rail Bar model that fits within the factory rail profile.

schubie,

Did you ever install the Rail Bar on your 2010 Touareg? According to their website the Rail bar doesn't fit the 2010, but the Throughbar does. I can't see why it wouldn't fit it, but thought I would check to see if you or anyone else is using it.

I didn't, in part because there's a slight clearance issue with the Rail Bar with the sunroof open. (That's according to the NZ reps I spoke with, and why they took it off the fitment guide.)

The other reason was I couldn't pass up OEM cross bars for 1/3 the price.

Hope this helps--Chris

I just installed the Whisbar (S44) on my 2008 T2. If fits no problem. I have the front cross bar all the way forward and the sunroof opens fully. I didn't have time to play with it and see if it interferes with the sunroof at full tilt when the bar is further back but it looks like it would be close.

Are both cross bars the S44? Looking for this slim/OEM fit vs. the Thule Aerobar. What sizes would you recommend I get to try out? I have a 2010 TDI w/ raised rails.

I went to Rack Attack and told them I wanted the Whisbar model S44. They told me they didn't fit my application but I insisted a try. I don't think there are different sizes. They fit with no issues, they feel strong enough and I have carried a fully loaded roof box with them.

Without the box I haven't even noticed them on.

I have the whispbars on my Treg and they are quiet, I leave them on all the time, there isn't much clearance with my thule Hyper XL and you have to tuck the clamps up in the box all the way closed before putting the box on the rails.

Then the clamps only have about 1/8" clearance between the roof and clamps.
I haven't noticed any damage on my roof but it is really close.
I don't have a sunroof because my Treg is a Sport model.

You could always remove the raised rails and go with OEM T1 crossbars like I did on my T2. They are very quiet and hold lots of weight.

I've got the OEM bars (made by Thule) on my T3 with a Sunroof. The sunroof will function just fine with my bars and Thule Sonic installed - but it's close. Pic in my profile (on the left) is with the bars and box installed.

Love the Whispbar proflie, couldn't swallow the price or the fit (with a roof).

Lyndon, thanks for the heads-up. The whispbars (plus occasionally a roof box) are exactly what I'm thinking of doing, but am very worried about clearance because the bars could be toooooo low. Any chance you can take some close pictures showing the distance? (If you still have the box on, that'd be super helpful.)

1/8" is closer than I would've thought...

I run the Whispbar S18 (58") Through Bars. I wanted to be able to run a box in the middle with a bike on each side. Love my Whispbars! Definitely the most expensive option but by far the best. The matching Whispbar bike trays come on/off in a matter of seconds and the main bars stay on all the time. No ill effects on gas mileage and absolutely no noise.

Wish I had a better pic of the rack setup, but this is the only one I can find right now.
