So... Connecting another BT device didn't seem to make any difference. Pulled the module and reconnected. Actually pretty easy, although the cables didn't really want to extend and required a little careful rocking, but once the unit unseated fully, there was more than enough room to work with the connectors. Calls seem to be OK now. Probably just a coincidence and will be inaudible again tomorrow, but for the moment, perhaps this worked? Which would be kind of amazing, considering it cost nothing but a few minutes of my time.

Markoffate,
Are your BT calls still clear to the receiving person after pulling and re-setting the module?

I recently purchased a 2016 Touareg LUX TDI, and the bluetooth sound reception for whoever is listening to the person in the car is the worst I've ever heard. I have tried finding the mic sensitivity in VCDS and have had no luck for this model year. Same goes for finding the Green Screen. I have tried every way I can find through searches, and my car either doesn't have those modules, or they don't connect, and the button pushing to get to the green screen doesn't do it, either.

I did pull off the cover to the Homelink panel to access the microphones, though, and stuffed the empty space between them and the roof with foam from jewelry boxes. This made a remarkable improvement. It's still not crystal clear, but it no longer has the choppy, intermittent sound that it had before. I may try to find some better foam or sound deadener and re-do it. Here is a picture of what it looks like with the cover off. There are tabs on all four sides of the cover, but the largest ones are on top, so I recommend prying up the cover from the bottom first. I managed to do it without damage.

I would still like to play with the mic sensitivity, so if anyone knows how to do that via VCDS on a 2016 model I would appreciate it

Sorry for the delay, I was out of town. I have the RNS850 (2016 LUX)

I'll attempt to post the autoscan here.

@Dieseldog -- Pro tip: Bracket your VCDS log text in a CODE block to preserve white-spacing/indents.

So, no fault code from the RNS850 main unit (Address 5F). You wrote above that you can't start the Green Engineering Menu (GEM). You should check with VCDS whether Address 5F Adapation Channel 06 value is set to '1', which enables "Development test mode". When "Development test mode" is enabled, start the GEM by pressing and holding [SETUP]+[CAR] (that is, press and hold [SETUP] a half second before pressing [CAR]).

And MU Software version 0933 is already the latest for your U.S. main unit. --g

I will try that, thanks.

I finally got into the green screen. I suspect that on my prior attempts I was not pressing the Setup button slightly before the Car button. I played with the mic db settings, and zero works the best for me. I also pried up the Homelink cover again and replaced the jewelry box foam with some materials I had leftover from sound proofing my truck several years back. Using small enough pieces to fit up there (roughly 2"x5"), I inserted some MLV (Mass Loaded Vinyl) and some higher density sound proofing foam up between the roof and the microphones. The easiest way to get the cover off is to insert a thin putty knife or similar tool into the center of the side of the panel, pushing in on the release tab, and then working your way around the bottom, up the other side, and then the top will pop out. Between the sound proofing and changing the mic db setting to zero, the listener's reception quality is greatly improved. It sounds about like talking to someone who is on speaker phone. You can hear some road noise, as expected, but it is quite clear and no more choppy, clipped sound.

There are a lot of settings in the green screen, but I haven't really found a list of which ones people have played with. Does anyone have that?

That's because you're more likely to break things -- for example, MMI menus -- than add or change the functionaility of car systems. Individual control module long coding and adaptations are generally where you would make changes to affect the behavior of those control modules (for example, "celebration" (AKA needle sweep) in 17-Instruments). --g

Check out the thread in the link below.
Unfortunately it's not stated exactly where this is except it's in the green menu.
Just be sure to write down how you get to that menu and any and all original values you change just in case.

Be careful -- this looks like a (very) early Green Engineering Menu definition that no one should be using now with US_K0711 (and later) and EU_K0841 (and later) software versions. The current GEM definition for mic "sensitivity" should look like the image in post #11. --g
I honestly did not look/see what firmware was being run within that thread.
I notice that the pic in post #11 shows the mic sensitivity @ -6db. In the thread I included they say that +6db works better.
By way of your picture in post #11 the sensitivity can be adjusted on newer firmware. So does the +6db setting actually sound better than the -6db setting?

After installing sound deadening materials, I drove the car at 60mph and talked with my wife, trying all three settings, -6, 0, +6. She said that 0 sounded the best, so I left it there. I might try switching between 0 and +6 with her driving and me at home on the phone so that I can listen to it. I suspect which setting works best may be dependent upon the ambient noise levels near the mic (noise deadening material), but I can say for sure that what I've done is a huge improvement to what I had.

Seems the best repair/fix for BT sound quality issues is the installation of the sound deadening material.
Definitely a better option for some rather than messing with the green menu.

Update: While driving 75mph and talking with my daughter, I switched back and forth between 0 and +6 on the bluetooth mic, and she said +6 sounds better. I suspect that the db setting is dependent upon whether or not you have soundproofing material around the microphones.

Markoffate,
Are your BT calls still clear to the receiving person after pulling and re-setting the module?

Nope. Back to terrible quality. In retrospect, not sure that pulling the module really did anything - maybe was just the imagination of the people on the other end of my test calls... Thank you for this suggestion. I'll give it a try. Seems like a pretty easy fix. Are you still getting decent reception?

My wife is driving it right now, 75mph and into a headwind. I just talked to her and I could hear road noise and her voice could have been a bit louder, but there is no more of the garbly, clipped audio that it used to have. I would say it sounds about normal for a car bluetooth traveling at that speed. A significant improvement over what it was. I wish that she knew how to change between 0 and +6 on the green screen so I could hear for myself the difference, but that's not going to happen!

Does anyone know which direction makes the mic more sensitive vs less sensitive? -6 or +6?

I believe -6 is less sensitive and +6 is more sensitive.
