Air suspension fault

Dec 2010 my air suspension overpressurized and ruptured the attached receiver while I was dining in a restaurant. Vehicle had 100k kms and not been off-road in previous 6 weeks(purchased 2nd hand Oct 2010). Compressor was replaced, relay under passenger seat, fuse in the dash plus some holed air lines from overheated compressor(couldn't achieve design pressure with ruptured receiver and couldn't isolate until NRMA disconnected manually). Vehicle returned to me but would not adjust to driver selectable suspension heights; returned immediately to dealer. 3 days later dealer said that the ECU controller was faulty; this was replaced and though dealer said car repaired I had to demonstrate that it was no different and again left without my car with them. Today I was told that they think the compressor is faulty(the replacement unit) and it will be a further two weeks to source the part from Germany and effect repairs. Today is 3 months to the day from the date of rupture - while air suspension is a great piece of technology it needs to be repairable when it fails.

You mean the thing exploded while it was off? The receiver as well as some lines were burst? Typically the wimpy little compressor will overheat and shut down, throwing a running gear fault. Do you get corrosion in Oz?

Receiver blow-out

The V10 was shut down in the Restaurant car park ....we had just been seated when the waitress advised of the problem. The side of the receiver cylinder ruptured outwards and then the compressor motor started up to try to maintain suspension pressure. There is no isolation point for this except manual disconnection which we were unaware of anyway. The compressor ran for probably 2 hours before the service man was able to disconnect it so heat developed during this time has probably caused the air line damage where the lines were adjacent to the compressor. There was also no evidence of corrosion..bear in mind most components appear to be alloys.

Didn't think the system was capable of generating the kind of pressure necessary to burst the tank or related components. Usually, those items are over built and provided with weaker links (e.g. burst disks) that sacrifice themselves at lower pressures.

Hopefully, you'll get your parts in sooner rather than later. When it's all sorted out, please update us on whatever else you learn.

V10 Air suspension

I finally collected my vehicle Friday 18/3/2011 with suspension now raising and lowering as designed after a system failure 10/12/2010. Part of the problem was the dealership not seeking technical assistance from VW Australia till late in the repair cycle but perhaps VW Aus. needs to start sending Technical experts to dealerships when they are experiencing problems requiring much head scratching. The customer satisfaction level would fly off the charts if they(the customer) get their vehicle back within a reasonable time.

Originally the air suspension compressor overpressurized the receiver cylinder adjacent to it(while the engine and compressor were NOT running) causing a rupture(cylinder blew out). Compressor replaced twice, ECU replaced, relay under passenger seat replaced, fuse in dash replaced plus some air lines believed pin-holed through exposure to excessive heat. It gets hot in our summer but not usually at 8:30pm! Nevertheless T is once again INSURGENT in the traffic stream.

This is goodd information, as i am fighting my air system now. Does anyone have a schematic or diagram of any type for an '04 V8 air system?

it would be GREATLY appreciated. Im searching everywhere for any info i can find.

The final verdict was that a faulty ECU caused the compressor to run beyond duty cycle and this led to successive interdependent faults. I'm nowhere near qualified to verify or not this analysis but I don't think there would be a great difference between the mode of operation of the air suspension systems....probably just sensor pressure set points. Good luck.

@mndesangia: A good garage might be able to put a length of air hose in for you using two connectors to bridge the damaged section at minimal cost.

My air compressor ran excessively and melted my air lines. It's a horrible set up and VW should be ashamed. I was unable to locate all new air lines because I was told by VW it would be near impossible to run new lines thru the body with out taking it all apart.

Solution was to find 6mm? (I think that's the size) compression fittings and splice together new lines. Then I fabricated a heat shield and heat wrapped all the lines to protect from further damage.
