Air Ride removal - '04 V8

Hi Guys,
I bought an 04 V8 a few days ago, winter pkg, nav etc.. Growing family and I had to replace my chrsler crossfire:(.
I had the Touareg in a shop for the certification and the air ride wasnt locked by the mechanic (after i specifically told him how!). Will this do serious damage?
2 days later (today) the front suspenison has no air (still sitting in shop but now on ground) I turned the truck on but the compressor didnt seem to kick on? (I thought I could hear it faintly the other day but not hearing it now)

Can the car be driven with the air off or low like this?

Has anyone ever taken air out and added struts and springs?
-I ask because years ago I installed aftermarket air on an import (tuner stuff) and its was a serious pain in the butt!

I really like the options and power, but i hate to think i will battle with air ride or get stranded from time to time.

Other then the connections for the front shocks going bad in areas where salt is used on the roads, it has been a pretty reliable system. If it is under warranty get it fixed and just keep an eye on the those above mentioned connectors in the winter time. Raise it to Xtra mode and just spray them off at a car wash every so often in the winter.

No one I am aware of ever removed the system, more people want to install it after the fact. Get it properly fixed and you should be fine. I would not drive it like that though.

When i drove it home it didnt seem to want to go up to the highest amber bar. At best i got to the second last, at hwy speed it drops (and shows on screen) and when i slow to stop it goes back up (also shown on screen).

I just talked to the shop and its still sagging, they are looking for answers in the TSB's.

Obviously it wasnt working perfectly when i bought it! it has a running gear error message too.

Well if your driving on the highway you shoudnt be able to get it to the highest bar. This would mean your in xtra high mode. The second bar from the top would be off road mode and then like the 3rd or 4rh bar would be comfort, auto mode. And then 2 bars or so would be sport mode.

The knob on the far right of your console controls your heights. Along with the swith in the middle that says sport, auto, comfort. Everyday driving the knob should be in auto level you can adjust to other modes by turning left or right and watching your MFD display to see what was selected.

You need to scan it for errors. A dealer will obviously charge you to hook up unless you're warranteed. If you intend to keep the Treg you need to buy Ross-Tech's VCDS cable and download the software or at least find a friend who has one. Don't even think about ebay cables.

The local dealer has mention A/S leaks on vehicles can be deceptive, ie: a low front might actually be a leak in back, or it could be one of the two reserves leaking...all in all its a very complex system of hoses, air tanks, a dryer, level sensors and an ECU...you need to get it hooked up to the dealers VAG system for diagnosis, or at the very least a VCDS or similar.

hey guys,

thanks for all the replies. I havent been on to check them because the truck was running fine after a day at the local garage and ive been busy stopping at gas stations filling up the thirstiest vehicle ive ever driven (my hemi's not this bad!). The running gear still has a fault but now that i have a better understanding i leave it in auto setting with comfort dampening. - Ive driven for 1.5 weeks worry free, washed the bags off gently with my pressure washer a few times and aside from the obvious fault at start up i cant complain....

Until today. 6:30am today on route to work travelling 80-100km/h the front end drops slowly but all the way down. i can hear it bottoming out on its own bump stops. So i drive slowly the few miles left to work and as soon as i pull in and park i step out and she goes up?! HIGH! like offroad mode. i may have flipped it to off road while driving hoping it would counteract the falling i was driving with. - So i get out and leave it in the parking lot for the day, looking like a monster in offroad mode.
At 5 im leaving for home, a few miles into the trip shes droping in the front again... same thing right down, red light comes on for the first time says STOP running gear fault. I pull over its jacked in the back slammed in the front, i look like a fool. Anyway, i select raise nothing happens i select auto and sport just hoping to level it off, pffff it may have come down 1/2 an inch in the rear. i turn the truck off and let sit for a minute then restart hoping to cycle the system, its back in auto height when i start back up. i continue on my way home, everytime i get some speed she drops in the front, this thing has a complete mind of its own. at traffic lights it comes up sometimes, other times it goes down more! I started noticing it was going down just to come up?? anyway i pull in my driveway hit raise, and she goes all the way up all 4 corners straight up xtra mode (which it wouldnt do when i first bought it for some reason - all modes except xtra worked)So i leave it on the road eat dinner go back out to move it in the driveway - Shes still in extra mode... and man thats high. i pull in the driveway the front is sagging down already , i press for loading level and the screen says tank is filling? what the snap?! im asking to drop not fill, and why is the tank empty anyway?

I took it to the dealer 3 weeks ago when the light was my only problem he said i need a new pump? this thing has too much functionality to be a pump, would other members here agree?
- Unless... and this just came to me while i read this aloud before publishing....if the compressor is lacking, the tank has less pressure than the bags and the weight in the front of the car combined with low pressure in tank is creating a valve fart thats allowing the pressure to go backwards from bag/cylinder into the tank?

Sorry for the novel i just noticed the dent i put in the keyboard. hehehe.

More to the Saga.

So this AM i decided id go get a coffee and give this girl another shot. And now i have time to look at it.

After cruising around for 15 mins, ive come to a conclusion.

When in park/stand still the air ride function ok,
As soon as i start to drive the front end (only) slowly drops.

although with exception. in the driveway slected to xtra mode. she goes up - all the way. leave the truck running get out and look.. yep its up. stare at it for a few mins and drink coffee and voila, pppssshhhh - a soulnd similar to a turbo blowoff valve and it drops to auto height (again only in the front) it doesnt sound like a leak because it is controlled. a minute later without command still idling in the driveway it comes back up to extra. a min or so later pppssshhhh drop. Again this is only in the front.
the rear of the car never moves or drops without command.

i hear my compressor turn on and off and run. - Sounds ok? i know what compressors sound like , and its cutting in and out alright...

Anyone have a diagram on the air system? ? is there some thing overheating and cutting out? a pressure sensor?

Great truck... I hate the air.

Try this: push it up to Xtra, lock the suspension using the lock button (center console, push until it says jack mode in the MFI), turn of the vehicle. Measure front wheel arch height at engine turn off and again a few hours later. I think that would help determine if it is a slow leak in the front suspension or not. If not, then attention can be focused on the mechanics of the inflation system, starting with sensors. Have you had a VAG-COM scan done on the air suspension controller?

Good idea. I started to do this and got side tracked. My thought was that if the "lock" mode locked the control valves i may not truly be isolating the problem bag.
Without knowing the system (again a schematic would do me wonders) I may lock out the travel/ecu/controls to maintain bag pressure and the leak could be in the bag itself or back at the other end at the valve. I guess either way i would establish a leak over pump issue....

Im heading outside to try this now.

So i tried it. granted i dont have the patience to let it sit all day. 1 hour later and i pushed and bounced the front end around to promote leaking... nothing happened. didnt move at all.

Further.

After 1 hour in lock i started the truck.. re-locked and drove 50 feet forward in driveway. the lock button shows locked on MFI the air shows up to top on gauge. but the front physically drops as i move.. all the way down.

i unlock. i flip the knob to go back up (although mfi still says im up) nothing happens. compressor doesnt turn on, indicators dont say im down.. etc.

let it idle for a few mins, pump comes on, truck goes up, i flip it to auto and comfort (thats where i prefer it when it works properly)

now its sitting my driveway looking like it normally does in auto height.

What gives... am i the only one that has had real problems with the air? no one seems to have much to say?

Anyone have diagrams?

Whats the relay under the passenger seat i hear about?

When it drops out of no where, its not a mild leak drop, its a pppssshhhhh down i go because it wants to. theres no way its seeping out like this. its choosing to go down at that moment.

The fact it goes up and down and can stay up if it feels like it indicates there are no leaks in the system and, therefore, it's to do with the controls/sensors and/or pump activation.

You need to run VAGcom first to find out what, if any, fault codes are thrown up.

Then you stand a chance of starting to identify the pronlem.

So no matter what mode you have it in i.e. Xtra mode, offroad mode etc. The front end drops after you get out and you hear the air blowing off? Mine does this and i was always skeptical of this as well but i have been told since it was new that this is a "convenience feature" which makes no sense to me. If im in offroad mode i want that xtra height i dont need it to lower itself onto a rock when i get out.

However i have seen other A\S toauregs and the ones i saw all seem to do this.

thanks for the replies guys.

Yes, the air pump and bags seem to hold air - its gotta be an electrical issue.

Also to the other reply, The air blows off and rebounds back if the truck is running.

If the truck is off the air doesnt move.

Does anyone have a VAG in niagara Ontario?

Where do i get this Vag? is it a software program with a specific cable?

A Vag-Com, or VCDS as it is now know is is computer scan tool/software combo that can do many things, least of which is pull and clear fault codes from your vehicle.

Agreed. Or, get friendly with others in your playground. Many are willing to share, especially if you throw in some beer. ;)

Air ride ECU

Ok. Thanks for the info. i will get one once i get over this bump.

Tonight i pulled the compressor and solenoid valve block out. Im sending the compressor to a compressor shop to check and service if possible. After getting into it im pretty sure the problem is the air ride ECU.

does anyone have any experience changing this? if i buy a used and install it do i need to see the dealer to "flash" it??

Hooked to VAG

So... I put the compressor back in (it operates normally and had no signs of corrosion in the discharge valve etc.)

I took it to a local VW shop that scanned with vag. My suspension wouldnt allow him to enter the system to see or diagnose also tpms was locked too. Are these both controlled by the same ECU?

Anyone ever see this before?

The engine scanned and transmission scanned successfully.

The transmission had a "lower than allowed voltage at transfer"
-Anyone ever see this?

Does the fact that the suspension ecu wouldnt read mean the ecu is likely shot?

Make sure your engine hood switch is working properly as the vehicle will bow when it senses it is opened. 2004's used ride height sensors and wheel sensors to make adjustments to the ride height. In newer models they got rid of the wheel sensors and used a significantly faster ECU with the ride height sensors -- There is a TSB explaining all this and how to test the suspension. TSB's are listed on this site if you search.

Also make sure your battery is in good shape as the electronics are shut down in order of least priority - this may be why you could not see the control units if they were shut down due to low battery/charging. I take it your amp meter on the dash shows a steady 14v when engine is running?
