Hey guys, I have a few random questions and rather than creating 3-4 separate threads. Also to make it easier, I have a 2004, V6 T1 with the bi-xenon auto leveling headlights.

1: I FINALLY fixed my leaking rear washer....thankfully all it was, was a lose connection, reconnected and zip tied to prevent further disconnection from occurring but now ran into possibly another problem. When I use the rear washer, it just shoots washer fluid down the rear window, and it shoots it for a long time so yes it does clean the window but so much is just shot down the car that it seems VERY inefficient. My question is, could I be missing a piece that would make the washer fluid spray out in a fan shape as opposed to a straight line down the rear window?

2: The light on the back of my lift gate (the one on the actual lift gate) is burnt out, I did manage to take it off the lift gate and i disconnected a wire that was clipped to it but i could not for the life of me figure out how i could get to the actual bulb...anyone gone through similar problems?

3: This question isn't about getting to the Headlight bulbs....I have read up and watched a couple videos on it so I know how to remove the headlight housing but the one part that I don't understand is how I can get the headlight bulb out of the assembly and replace it. I seen some pictures and it appears to be connected to some wires, and I understand how to disconnect the wires but how do I get the bulb out. Does it just slide out after disconnecting the wires or are there any screws involved?

4: Is there any way to turn off those darn memory seats? I have tried like 20 times to program it to the way I like to drive but it only remembers the way the last driver liked to drive. So EVERY SINGLE TIME I drive anywhere I have to readjust the damn seats and sometimes I drive to multiple places so I readjust the seats 5 times a day and sometimes more.....thank god the last driver had the mirrors exactly how I like them or else I would have to fix those as well.

Thank you for taking the time to read all the questions and I hope you guys will be able to help me out as you have COUNTLESS times before.

Q4. Do you not have a owner's manual? In that manual it should describe how to program the seat to your comfort settings (and the mirrors too)
On mine - fancy leather seat with lumbar support etc, etc - there are four rectangular buttons along the side of the seat: 1, 2, 3, 'set'. With the key YOU use in the ignition (I'm not sure if it has to be 'on')and while you are sitting in the seat, set all the seat settings (and the mirrors) the way you want them, press 1, or 2, or 3 and immediately press and hold 'set' for a bit. There may be a tone or a 'beep' to let you know it 'took'. If that didn't work, press a number and 'set' simultaneously.
Did you know there is a button on the side of the steering column that turns the 'easy entry' function off and on? If that button is set to 'on', when you turn the key off and remove it from the ignition, the steering wheel raises up and pulls forward and the seat goes all the way back so you can swing your legs out easily!

1. No, its just the way it is.. Straight line down.
2. You'll have to order the complet light, here is a pic and a part number

3. Just get the headlight out and you'll find out how to get the bulb. No wires.. Just slide it, but be carefull because the opening mechanism can easily brake.

Reference #2:

Are we talking about the high level brake light at the top of the tailgate through which the washer jet squirts, or are we talking about the combined red warning/white courtesy light in the bottom edge of the tailgate that you only see when you open the tailgate?

First of all, THANK YOU ALL VERY MUCH for taking the time to reply to my questions.

FourDiesel: I do have the manual and I tried everything you said and it still refuses to learn my memory settings. I guess my next question is, is there a way to completely disable memory settings or erase memory settings so that the seat will stay in the position it was when I turn off the vehicle?

TouaregMNE: thanks for explaining how to get the bulb out, when I seen the pics I was confused but seems easy enough.

Noob: I'm talking about the combined red warning/white courtesy light in the bottom edge of the tailgate that you only see when you open the tailgate, not the light that TouaregMNE was talking about although I do appreciate him taking the time to find me the link to the part number.

I'll have a look at mine in the morning: see if I can figure it out whilst you're asleep!

I'm just off up the wooden hill now.

Ok sounds great, thank you very much. Also you Brits and your sayings, i hear a new one everyday. You had me wondering what the heck a wooden hill was for a few minutes till i figured it out hahahahah.

Seat memory is also stored in the key fob and must be set separately from the buttons on the seat (at least on mine an '07 with keyless). When you unlock the car seats may go to what is stored in the key. If you have set the memory buttons on the seat you have to push and hold the appropriate memory button until the seat reaches its final position. Don't know why but thats how mine works.

I don't think the seat memory is "stored in" the fob, the car just identifies the fob, and then actuated what you have programmed to that fob.

I knew I had put a new bulb in that red/white light unit but could not recall how it came apart!

Anyway here are some [crappy] pictures on how to remove the metal reflector and gain access to the festoon bulb inside.

There is an upright tab on the middle edge of the metal reflector that sits under an upright grey plastic tab. Spring the two apart GENTLEY and CAREFULLY with a small thin screwdriver and the metal reflector slides up and out thereby exposing the bulb - 5W 12V G10 is written on mine.

Oh, and find someone with small fingers to put the new bulb in . . . . . .

Why the **** VW makes light units so complicated God only knows [and wait 'til you get to replacing rear quarter and headlight bulbs . . . . !]

Anyway, my bacon and eggs await me so it's "Gooooooooooooooooooooood morning America" from me.

Have a nice day now!

i can't thank you enough noobs, i really really really appreciate you taking the time out of your day to show me how to change the bulb. honestly I'm not even the gushy or squishy type but you have no idea what it means to me for someone who is a complete stranger, who lives on the other side of the world, and has a 1000 better things to do and gets no benefit from helping me, to take time out of their day to help me out. Although i doubt i will ever be able to help you out with anything touareg related, i will try when i can. And ditto on the completely unnecessarily complicated (everything) in the touareg. I wonder if the newer touaregs are easier to DIY, i read somewhere that VW intentionally made the new touareg easier to DIY but im not sure.

THANK YOU!!!

No problem - it's always nice when you can help someone out.

As for VW and the T3, there is a concerted effort by manufacturers to make cars more difficult for DIY, not less.

At least that is the case here in Europe where the car makers have such an effective lobby with the European Parliament that if that bulb you are trying to replace is not working when my car goes for its annual Ministry of Transport roadworthiness test, the car will fail.

It has no bearing upon the fitness of the car to be on the road - but that's they way the car makers are pushing legislation with the full - but publicly undeclared - intention that only their dealers will be able to fix the car in future.

So enjoy fixing things that you can whilst you can!

As for the car seat memory, do all the steps mentioned, then get out of the car and physically lock the car with the key, not by pressing the fob button. Your seat will now be programmed to your key.

Check out the FAQ on the VW Vortex Touareg forum. It should be the first topic. Tons of info there.

WOW Noobs, that sounds terrible. I can totally see that happening now that you mention it. Even here where American cars -which we call domestics- have always been known to be very easy to DIY (even for people who are just beginning), they too are becoming very complex and difficult to fix. Yesterday my brother very graciously drained my battery by leaving the lights on and a phone charger in the treg, and I completely forgot about the battery terminals in the engine bay so I was sitting there trying to get to the battery under the drivers seat.....which got me thinking....why make a vehicle so unnecessarily complex? believe me, I knew what I was signing up for way before I bought the treg but still....if I had to name my one gripe with the touareg, it would have to be complexity, not fuel economy, not cost of repair (which im convinced would be cheaper had it not been for the complexity), not even cost of ownership. If the touareg was not so amazing, I would be more bothered by some of its short comings but I think its an awesome tank so I don't mind putting up with it.

Pilottim: Thank you, I will give that a try for sure....maybe that's why its not catching? I will try it and report back

as always, thank you for the help
