Gotta say I really like it in my 2012, and if it's anything like the Aisin components in my 60 series Landcruiser, it will give absolutely stellar performance for a long, long life!

I am rapidly (year to 2 year MY time frame)getting the feeling that this pairing (high torque diesel motor to Aisin TR-80 SD, 8 sp A/T) is probably one of the best in a very long time.

More on topic is that on some other references I had read, our specific transmission has a 627 # ft of torque handling capacity for our 406 # ft motor. To me this is a HUGE advantage. Many high hp/torque motors are paired with transmissions with very little safety factor.

Again off topic, I am also curious about the competitors A/T's: BMW X5 and MB ML350 (bluetecs). I understand that the 2012 MB ML350 has a so called 7 sp A/T "hybrid" CVT, even as they do not advertise this very much. Indeed most references are merely 7 sp A/T. So for me, the nexus is the longer term mpg, reliability and durability, while being mated to a 455# ft torque CDI motor.

By way of background, MB has done a great job in the past by mating a high torque CDI motor to one of the (then) best A/T; a sample would be the E320/350, ML/GL 320 CDI

Be aware that in the UK and elsewhere in the world, there is an issue with this gearbox - top speed is reached in 6th and 7th and 8th are essentially lower ratio overdrive gears, no doubt for fuel economy. In the top gears when pulling under load at about 1600 - 1700 revs, which equates to the UK motorway/dual carriageway speed limit, you can get a vibration which emanates from the engine/transmission and can be felt through the steering wheel and associated controls. This shouldn't happen to a luxury car and is both intermittent and frustrating. Several UK/other owners have reported this issue and the dealers have been unable to remedy it or come up with a solution. It can be severe or mild but is a frustration nevertheless. In some cases, VW have replaced the car. Hopefully they are working in a permanent fix . I have experienced this once only on my 2012 Touareg Altitude 245 V6 TDI during a trip to France when fully loaded and with both cruise activated and disabled. Easily remedied if you drop a gear or two manually, but you shouldn't have to do this. The Aisin box is otherwise smooth and competent but beware the vibration issue as described.
