Curious what other 4.2 V8 (non-FSI) owners are getting for fuel mileage. I average 15 MPG with 50/50 highway and around town. I run 91 Octane gas. I've changed spark plugs and air filters in hopes of squeezing a little more out of it with negligible effect. I have 18" Manhattan rims with 255/55 all season tires. Please post your mileage. Runs great, just not sure if this type of mileage is normal.

I have about the same specs as yours, except I have grand touring tires (whatever that means). The biggest difference, of course, is that GT tires have a harder rubber to last the extended miles.

I average about 17mpg. Mostly freeway driving(about 75/25), mostly at about 80-90mph and usually "spirited" driving when in the city. (what I mean by that is that I accelerate more briskly than most people but I am definitely not the aggressive jerk that cuts everyone off and accelerates harshly when taking off after every light)

15.5 mpg on average over 4 + years of ownership. Is what it is.

cold weather, short trips suck gas the worse
trailer towing sucks gas as well

highway cruising at 75-80 might improve it to 16.5

with the stock 19s and/or the stock 18s, with GIAC software and a 60/40 (highway/city) I was averaging around 15.5mpg... now w/ the 285/60s I am averaging around 13.8-14.2mpg with the same driving mix

Absolutely, night and day difference with throttle response and mid-range torque... I drove my GF's truck for the first time in several months this weekend and other than driving several inches closer to the ground, it was annoying how it reacted to highway passing (based upon what I've become used to)... Before the bigger tires I noticed a ~1mpg increase as well

Have the stock wheels with goodyear wranglers (I don't like them) and about 100k miles, I get about 14 MPG. If I drive with cruise and keep the speed know, I can squeeze about a mile more.

2004 V8 w/83000 miles, factory 19's. I drive 4 miles each way to work in town. I average 12-13 mpg. Trips 17-19 mpg. Towing 14-15 mpg. I am very happy with the mileage for what weighs. It is wayyyyyyy better than the F150 4x4 that I had before. :)

05 v8, i average 16.5 with 40/60 city hgway combo. I have gotten 18.8 with pure highway at 70mph on a regular basis.

Im running cont dws which have less rolling resistance and they have helped over the prior michelins that i had.

That's strange. I am either getting about 1 to 2 mpg more than everyone else or the MFI is leading me in the wrong direction. I'd think the thin air in salt lake would make it worse, not better.

I will start calculating by hand again and see what happens.

I'd think the thin air in salt lake would make it worse, not better.QUOTE]

Thinner air requires less fuel to maintain the constant air/fuel ratio that any engine requires. Without forced induction, we can't control the air supply, but we can control the fuel supply. The down side to that is less air in = less fuel in to maintain air/fuel ratio = less power. That's why forced induction engines perform so much better at altitude, as they're not affected nearly as much by thin air.

Most of my driving has been city driving, so I am not seeing these numbers. I am seeing closer to 8/10mpg, but that is with a little bit of a lead foot. Although I love the features, comfort, the get up and go that she has, as well as that meaty V8 growl, this truck is a massive dissapointment for me. If I drive it all, I will spend $5,000 a year on gas, plus $2,000 for insurance, plus the maintenance. $300 for the minor service/ oil change, $1,500 for brakes, and the odd little things that seem to break and are outrageously priced to fix... $2,000 for the power streering rack, $1600 for tires, plus alignment and taxes... another $2,000. I would strongly recommend to everyone to stay away from the V8 unless you either have tons of cash, only plan to drive it infrequently, or you can write it off as a business expense. ***Run fast and run far.

By the way... Anyone want to buy a low mileage 2004 V8 touareg? :p

1st of all most your complaints are not V8 realated, cost wise.
I have never paid $1600 on tires, more like $800 and they last 60 k miles or almost 100000kms. I spend $600 on new brakes (rotors, pads and sensors) and crawl on my garage floor for 3 hours. Insurance for me $50 a month

It is silly to say run away from it.
Expect a premium prices and cost if you buy a premium car and take it to the dealer for everything.
Only thing out of the ordinary I read is the steering rack. Other than that you have a car of which one can expect it costs you what it did. You were clearly not ready for a car like this?
