I have a 2006 V8 Touareg that needs a set of 20" wheels. i think that the 275/45/R20 tire looks the best and probably has the smoothest ride. I saw somewhere where VW recommends a 275/40/R20. Does anyone know if VW will give me any warranty flack if I go with the 45 series?

Sincerely,
Monk

I've been running 275/45/20s for a couple years now..works fantastic, I love them. Most guys running 20's on the board are doing it with 45s not 40s. Technically 40 is the correct size, but if you want to maintain some SUV usability, that extra bit of sidewall offered by the 45s is priceless!

Today i purchased a set of Audi Q7 S-Line 20" wheels (the ones that come on 2009 Q7's) with a set of new 275/45r20's mounted on them (this the the stock size for the Q7.)... so hopefully they work:). Sounds like a lot of guys have used 275/45r20's without and issues. Curious how you like the 40 series... if might switch to 275/40's on my next set of tires.

I just installed my newly bought 275-40-20 today. It marks the very first time in my life I'm trying this size on a Touareg. Quite a big difference over the stock 18's! More so than I had expected in all given aspects of the driving experience. I'll need some more time with them, but first impressions were that comfort mode on the air suspension felt like what sport mode did on the 18's, as far as ride compliancy over bumps. Handling and steering responsiveness on the 275-40-20's is a HUGE difference however! Very safe on the highway indeed, should a severe emergency maneuver ever manifest itself. The latter is what may keep me a 40 series fan for good. What might push me away from the 40's, and want to try the 45's next time, will be the slight increase road noise transmitted through the cabin, and harsher ride over our Montreal regions pot holes. How well this all adds up over time and weighed on the scale will be key. It's all user end preference at the end of the day.

I forgot to do this, but it would be cool for someone to record the dB level using a dB measuring apparatus (think iPhone APPS), with the 18's and 20's. Shame I completely forgot ](*,)
Maybe next fall.

Responsible vendors will always try and push what is listed as OEM specs first, as far as tire sizes are concerned, and it is quite obvious as to why. Some of them will also only stick to what is listed on your door placard when it comes to tire pressures, etc, afterwards. You can't blame them for this, as frustrating as it may be for some. Not everybody(read most) is a knowledgeable enthusiast who knows their car better than the rest. Your best bet when buying tires, is to not tell them at all what car it's for to begin with. I usually say, it's for a "custom built" car with no name, then they keep quiet. ;)

45's will work on your VW SUV, but they are not OEM diameter specs. Very simple. It's up to the end user to decide what the criteria of his/her lifestyle will dictate on these sort of matters. There is no better than the other. Pros and cons to all approaches. Pros and cons to both 40's and 45's.

Dug up this older thread rather than start another.

Need to replace wheels and tyres on my 04 V10

Currently running stock wheels VW Namib 19" with 275 45 19

Looking at buying some
Audi Q7 S-line Alloys with fitted Goodyear Eagle F1 275/45/R20 110 Y
The PCD CB and offset seem correct as far as I'm reading.

Now from reading through this thread, most think the tyre size is "good" for the Touareg but my question is:

How much will this change the mileometer accuracy?

If stock 19" 45 profiles are standard going to 20" 45's suggests a fair bit more in circumference?

Has anyone who changed any experience? or checked against the reading from a sat nav GPS?

Cheers

There will be an inch of difference in diameter. The stock size is 28.7" and the new size will be 29.7". Will be off 3.5%. What this means is your speedo may be closer to being accurate and your odometer will be 3.5% slow. So when you figure out your mpg when you fill up with the new size you will have to add that 3.5% back to the odometer to get a true reading. Benefit is your are sort of keeping miles off the odometer and you will be closer to correct speed. Speed you will have to check via a GPS.

With factory 19" atheos and 285/45/19 michelins, my speedometer was off (slow) by approximately 3%. Installed 20" wheels with 275/45/20 yoko's, speedometer is dead on. Compared speed using two different GPS units, then, used a radar gun to verify.
