I am about to schedule the fix for my 2014 RLine TDI Touareg. Anyone had it done and if so what has been the results. Fuel economy is a concern but mostly performance. Any feedback will be appreciated.

what company is looking to help tune the trans....im interested to know as id like to mess with my 2012

A week since my 2014 Execline R-Line (Canada) was fixed. Thoughts:
- Economy seems exactly the same, no issues.
- I definitely notice on cold starts (-14C here today) it sits in 3rd gear longer as I drive the residential streets away from my house.
- It seems to get warmer in the cabin much quicker - with no remote start or block heater this is a real plus.
- Maybe a little noisier on startup but only from outside.
- Absolutely no issues with acceleration, urgency with a heavy foot etc - I don't notice any difference from before.

So for me it's all good so far. With the extended warranty I think I'll keep this another while - coming up to 130k kilometres had me worried about major repairs. The cash payment will be icing on the cake. Maybe I'm easily pleased but seems an all-round decent outcome.

130k on a tdi touareg is nothing...mine is coming up on 190k and it drives and runs better then when i got it...infact i had a 2017 grand Cherokee jeep a couple weeks ago and id take my 2012 190k touareg over it any day of the week.

my 2011 tdi jetta is just over 328k and still drives and runs great, this is built to a much high standard and quality then a jetta, i have no worries

Fix completed today - wife drove it home and says it drove the same, did not notice any changes.
I just took it down the street and back, I don't notice any issues at all. It was finished the same day, but it was late and they let us come back the following day.

Paperwork reads: "INSTALL 3.0L GEN 2.1 KIT, INSTALL GLOW PLUG WITH COMBUSTION CHAMBER PRESSURE SENSOR, ..."

Very pleased with my local Dealer - Minuteman VW in Bedford MA - 2 thumbs up, very professional, great service, filled DEF, filled fuel tank, and also did another recall - "Install bracket on ATF pipe" without asking.

That's my home base. There are a couple of brothers who work in the service dept who are very tuned in to the 2.0L and 3.0L diesel engines. And they let me sit in the shop with a folding chair periodically and shoot the $hit while servicing the car. Living in Boston, I have the Medford dealer very close by but only go there to buy parts/fluids.

I've gotten all the cash VW is offering and have the extended exhaust warranty (including a free-to-me AdBlue heater replaced last month). I have been to the dealer twice in the last six months for free AdBlue fill-ups (my son is at school about 200 miles away and my daughter lives about 300 miles away - so I rack up miles quickly with my heavy right foot). The dealer has not mentioned 'the fix' and I will do it only if/when compelled by law. My '14 R-Line is up for inspection in July, so we'll see if they mention it. I don't have the coin for mods mentioned and absolutely love the driving characteristics as they are now.

#65 ·
I haven't asked for the fix and the dealer hasn't brought it up....so not sure how I pulled it off or am pulling it off. I've never seen another diesel Treg on the lot or in the shop. So, just biding my time. Do I understand correctly that after the 'fix', it's possible to remap the software back to original specs?

#67 ·
Without proof of an "emissions compliant repair" ("the fix") being completed there is no way VW corporate would initiate the payment for the full amount. Possible you got the "participation payment" which should be about half of the total "repair payment" amount. It was given out basically as a stall tactic to get owners to lessen the complaining while VW developed the full repair and worked with EPA and CARB for approval.

It is possible to remap the ECU to a malone (or other tuner) stage 1 or 2just like before the fix, but I don't know of anyone remapping back to pre-fix stock sepcs. Also, apparently these tunes won't restore the old transmission behavior (engine braking/downshifting, now holds onto 3rd gear a LONG time before water temp comes up, I suspect EGR rates are even higher now which will contribute to manifold clogging, etc)

Keep in mind that ANY remap will effectively void the extended warranty you gain by letting them fix it. This is the sole reason I haven't pulled the trigger yet.

I received a $500 Visa gift card and $500 service/parts credit when I signed up with VAG. And I have received $1500 from Bosch. I've had several (three?) AdBlue fill-ups at no charge. And not a peep from dealer about the fix when in for my last oil change (about two weeks ago).

First, I wanted to share my experience driving the TDi after the "fix" (late december 2017). Other than holding the gears longer (when cold mostly and from a stop), I would be hard pressed to notice any significant changes. Second, I wanted to thank everyone on this blog for all the help, great community, ya'll will be missed.
Today I traded my '14 TDi for a Q7. It will be missed, but I get more space and more "goodies". Trade was actually better than expected for a '14 with about 46.5 K miles. ($28,000).
I wish all of you good luck, stay safe. See you at the Audiworld blog.
Peace out ya'll
CD.

2014 TDI Exec. Completed the fix today. One tank of gas prior to the fix, I (1) did a throttle reset, and (2) did not put any additive into the tank. That let me get a baseline sense of how the throttle felt, and how much noise the engine made without additive (since the dealer was going to refill the tank without additive). One of the most noticeable differences when you add Diesel Kleen or Stanadyne is that the engine is quieter (less diesel clatter, what little there is).

http://www.clubtouareg.com/forums/f43/national-throttle-reset-day-feb-1st-126786.html

After the fix:

  • As others have noted, the throttle response was extremely poor, as if the car had lost a lot of power. I felt like I had to push it almost to half throttle just to get it to respond from a stop like it did before when barely pressing the throttle.
  • I then completed another throttle reset, and throttle response returned to normal. I now cannot tell if there's any difference in throttle response from before to after the fix. It could be slightly worse, or that might just be because I took the car in with an empty fuel tank and got it back with a full tank. So it seems like the emissions fix can put the throttle response into a poor state, which can be corrected with a reset.
  • There's more clatter when starting with the engine cold. "Cold" is a bit relative since I'm in Southern California and it was 85 F today. But I did notice the engine made more diesel-like noise before the engine temp rose to its normal operating temp. In particular, when I was trying to accelerate uphill, for the first time since I've owned the car it really sounded like a diesel truck. It'll be another tank of gas (a few weeks) before I know how much the additive will mitigate this.
  • Once the engine warmed up, I didn't notice any difference in noise. There *might* be a little clatter around 1700 RPM, but I suspect that's just something loose since it's very specific to that RPM.
  • Engine braking is reduced, but not as much as I'd hoped. I'm one of the oddballs here who doesn't like automatic engine braking. If I want the car to slow down, I prefer doing the engine braking manually. If the car does it automatically and I have to try to override it manually, I have to guess when the shift points are to shift it into a higher gear. Whereas if the car doesn't engine brake on its own, I can downshift it whenever and as much as I like.
  • No idea if mileage has changed. I haven't been able to drive the car enough to say. At 30-45 MPH the instantaneous mileage was reading a lot higher than I was used to (about 35-45 MPG on a slight uphill slope, where I'm used to getting 20-35 MPG instantaneous). But this was a single short drive, and the MPG since start didn't seem any different.

I'll post a mileage followup report after I've burned through this tank of gas (I've reset the long-term computer as well). Also an engine noise report once I get additive back into the tank. And I'll probably be towing my boat (which is right at the 7700 lb tow limit) some time in February so that should give me some idea if power/torque was adversely affected.

Some additional tips:

  • You will need your VWGoA online claims portal reference number when you get the fix done. It's a 9 digit number starting with 17. I had to spend 5 minutes searching for it in my emails on my phone.
  • That little diesel fix pamphlet VW mailed you? Bring it with you to the dealer. My dealer didn't know about the free tank of gas. They said they searched through 70 pages of documentation from VW about the fix and didn't find anything about a full tank of gas. I had to show them the pamphlet where it says as a courtesy a free AdBlue refill and tank of gas would be included (in the maintenance schedule section). Not really their fault - seems like the typical poor communication from VW corporate to their dealers. (No I don't think they were trying to rip me off. They've been very cool and up-front about things during my other scheduled and warranty services.)

Edit: Also, they gave me a 2018 Tiguan as a loaner. The rear cargo area is *bigger* than the Touareg. I had removed the cargo mat for cleaning. I tried putting it into the Tiguan and its cargo space is about 2-3 inches longer front-to-back. It's a few inches narrower side-to-side at the wheel wells, but closer to the back at the pockets it's about 8-10 inches wider. I'm impressed they managed to jam a spare tire + 3rd row seats in there. The new navigation system is nice (much higher refresh rate than on the RNS850, brighter with more saturated colors). But the engine is just adequate.

There is a TON of info on this out there. The dealer gets paid by VW to do the fix, they don't pay you.. they are likely not mentioning it simply to avoid being annoying. Some customers are waiting until the last possible minute to do it, hoping any bugs get sorted out before they do it. I'm not sure whether mileage figures into the payment, so not sure whether this strategy would impact the amount of money you'd get. I do know that with buybacks as long as you keep it under 12k/year the payout is the same.

go to claims.vwgoa.com and register there. You will have to submit paperwork to determine eligibility.. once they (vw claims administrator) approves it you can schedule an appointment with your dealer, they do the fix, you get paid either with a paper check or direct deposit. I chose DD and it was in my account in about 3 days.

#74 ·
Thanks Bloc. I went through the registration process this morning & submitted the requested docs. Payouts are calculated by 1) 10% of vehicle's Sept 2015 NADA clean retail value (adjusted for options but NOT mileage) and 2) a fixed dollar amount - not sure what that means. Also included is an extended emissions warranty. Waiting now on getting approved by claims administrator....anybody have a ballpark time frame for this approval?

#75 ·
If you search I'm sure you'll be able to find a payout calculator, or at least an index showing what you should get for your year/options/mileage. Frankly I'm surprised you haven't stumbled upon this info already.. it has been everywhere.

I don't know what the current wait times are.. and my times likely aren't relevant since the initial rush of 3.0 claims has passed by now. you might check the Dieselgate section/threads for a better idea of what people are dealing with.

I refilled the tank after 500 miles, this time with Stanadyne additive. Short followup to my earlier report here:
http://www.clubtouareg.com/forums/f93/2014-touareg-tdi-fix-reports-273513-8.html#post1938009

  • The noise at 1700 RPM was indeed diesel clatter, not something loose. It did not happen with the car in neutral and revved up to 1700 RPM. The RPM range at which it happened expanded or compressed with how much load was on the engine (going uphill, accelerating sharply, or towing). At worst it happened all the way from 1550-1850 RPM. There were also similar clatters which didn't happen as frequently around 1250 RPM and 2300 RPM.
  • The noise almost entirely disappeared after I refueled with additive. I cannot hear it anymore with the windows rolled up. If I have the windows down and am moving at slow speed, I can barely hear it, though now it's more of a scratching/rattling instead of a clatter. It's probably still making the noise at higher speed, but road noise drowns it out.
  • MPG was all over the place. It was substantially lower immediately after the fix. My driving on local roads dropped from 18-23 MPG to 15-20 MPG. Highway MPG dropped by about 1 MPG. But after about a week, MPG starting climbing again. Just before the fillup I was getting closer to 18-22 MPG on local driving, and highway MPG was the same as before the fix. I think someone else's comment was correct - that the computer needs time to "re-learn" the best shift points for the new engine performance.
  • Engine warmup time has changed. Immediately after the fix the engine went from a cold start to a normal temp really quickly - within a short distance from my house. Now it takes almost twice as long to warm up. It still warms up more quickly than before the fix, but nowhere near as quickly as right after the fix.
  • At slow speeds, the car still has a tendency to hang onto lower gears for longer before shifting, even after the oil temp is up to normal. This is trivial to override though (pop it into manual and force a shift).
  • It seemed to prefer lower gears more when towing, spending a lot more time in 2nd and 3rd gear than I was used to. This would suggest power and torque output is lower. However, I towed almost immediately after getting the fix. So if the MPG changing is any indication, I'll need to tow again before passing final judgement.

Overall, at this point I would say the fix has had a negligible impact on noise and mileage. Both are very, very slightly worse. I'll withhold judgment on performance until after I get to tow with it again.

I have put about 2,000 miles on my 2013 TDI since the update. The noticeable difference is the longer upshifts in lower gears when cold. Wanted to know others thoughts on the shift pattern changes.

I live in OH so I have had plenty of cold weather since the Recall update. The shifting really sucks now. Taking it up to around 2500 RPM before the upshift. Only plus is that it warms up faster.

Has anyone towed with a TDI after having the Recall Update performed?

I have a 2013 TReg TDI. I had not towed prior to the Recall Update. Last weekend I pulled a 3,600 lb trailer for roughly 20 miles on mostly flat Interstate (I-75) near Dayton, OH. I set the cruise at 64 MPH. The tranny was constantly shifting and running at 1,800 (probably 8th), then 2,000, 2,500 and even 3,000 RPM.

Do you think the shift changes are effecting towing? Is anyone manually shifting while towing?

I hope at least one of you has towed with an Updated vehicle.

Thx

I pulled a snowmobile on my utility trailer (figure maybe 1400 pounds total) two weeks ago and it pulled great. It was about 250 miles round trip - no issues at all. Lakes are still all iced up - so boat is still in storage.

#82 ·
Thx. I'm going to try the Gearbox reset and see if that has any effect on the low gear upshifts. I won't being towing the trailer for another month. I'm also going to check the brake controller and make sure it was set right. Just don't think I should see several gear changes on a flat road. Wouldn't think I would see 3,000 RPM unless I was climbing a fairly descent grade.

Final follow-up report. My two earlier reports are on the previous page:

http://www.clubtouareg.com/forums/f93/2014-touareg-tdi-fix-reports-273513-8.html#post1938009
http://www.clubtouareg.com/forums/f93/2014-touareg-tdi-fix-reports-273513-8.html#post1947178

Nothing has really changed from those posts. This post is mostly to cover towing behavior. I got two trips of about 30 miles each in with my boat (which is right at the 7700 lb tow limit).

  • It *really* likes 2nd gear when towing now. Not unusual to see it hang on to 2nd gear up to 4000 RPM. Engine hot, cold, just started or run for a half hour didn't matter. If I start from a start on flat ground, it hangs on to 2nd gear for what seems like forever before shifting to 3rd. Before the fix, shifting felt more normal. If I manually force it into 3rd, it seems to do just fine so maybe VW overestimated the power reduction at lower gears?
  • There's a slight tendency to shift into lower gears more quickly at freeway speeds (5th, 6th, 7th) than before the fix. It gives the accelerator a twitchy feel. If I'm cruising at 60 mph and hit a slight incline, whereas before it would continue in the current gear and rev up a bit more, now it immediately shifts down, sometimes 2 or 3 gears. This might indicate a reduction in power or torque.
  • If there is a reduction in power or torque, it didn't really affect accelerating from a stop. I can still accelerate faster than I feel comfortable pulling this heavy a load. I worry I'll break some of the straps holding the boat down.
  • Mileage while towing seemed unchanged. About 10-12 MPG on city streets, 12-15 MPG on the freeway.
  • One non-towing addendum. City mileage is definitely lower (by about 1 MPG). With 5 months under the belt since the fix, I'm getting 17-22 MPG on my daily local driving route. I've haven't been able to get better than 22 MPG on this loop since the fix, except a couple times at night when I hit mostly green lights. Before the fix the range was 18-23 MPG, and I'd hit 22 MPG maybe a quarter of the time. I'd say my average was about 21 MPG before the fix, but is 20 MPG now. (This is a very short loop - about 2 miles, usually started with the engine cold. If I run it with a warm engine I usually get 23-24 MPG.)

'13 Fix Done 1k miles

Despite my worst fears and being highly sensitive to whats going on with motor vehicles, I must say the the post-fix driving experience is not significantly changed....

cool April mornings.... a bit of clicking.... far from clatter

Engine Breaking - I always hit Sport Mode to downshift for certain deceleration needs..... still works adequately

Acceleration - unchanged...... actually From a stop, the crazy "Sport mode lurch" is less disconcerting

Gas mileage is not an issue for me and I do not tow much

PAINT ME RELIEVED ...... IF ....I can sell for $30k+ To make room for ordered '18 MacanS

Exec, Black, 23k miles, ,like new, wife's, badgeless euro grill

2014 Fix Done - Disappointed

I just had my “fix” applied - only about 10 days / 600 miles experience. In preparation I had a third party copy my ECU settings. I am not sure this will be worthwhile but thought it best to at least have an original copy. My “backup” action does not address the transmission software updates.

Thus far all of the potential impacts described in my recall letter are coming true (mileage impacts, some noise, etc.).

But for me there is more.

As the Treg warms-up between 70 and 90 C, the diesel begins to surge / gallop at low speeds. This surging can be as mild as just hearing it or as dramatic as strongly feeling it. The sound changes with the surging from quiet to what I call mild diesel clatter. If you have ever heard a diesel truck “galloping” at idle you will know what I mean. This surging disappears only after the engine is hot.

I have also noticed the tendency to “hang-on” to a particular gear whether towing or not. I have resorted to manual shifting to overcome.

We tow a 25 foot Airstream. I have not noticed any significant degradation in towing performance and the mpg has dropped only slightly in my short experience.

I am disappointed in the “fix”. I have advised my dealer and he is looking into my issues.

I too have that "surging" problem while warming up, also often when driving a still warm engine within 20-60min of turning it off. Most of the time the engine RPM will rise a bit and get some clatter but not much acceleration change, other times it will drop with some loss of acceleration.

I had this problem pre-fix, but the fix made it very repeatable and much much worse. It was obvious as I drove the first 50' out of the dealer, with bad sounding noises that the service advisor could hear from the service bay. They ended up replacing the turbo under warranty and the problems went away for several weeks but have slowly been re-appearing with intermittent frequency. There was a very similar problem when I bought the car and they replaced the EGR valve and exhaust intercooler. Each time the problem would go away for awhile but reappear later. I think it's some software issue, I'm considering doing an EGR delete or simply disabling the EGR valve and seeing if that fixes it.

I found the issue was most repeatable with a cold engine and very low, constant throttle input(10% at 15mph), hopefully your dealer can

2014 Fix

This was a great read and I guess I'm glad to know it's not all in my head. I did my fix in December. I do mostly city driving in a lot of stop and go traffic in Chicago. Since the fix, I've noticed:
- I've definitely noticed the issues with the transmission holding gears and sometimes feeling like it cant decide which gear to shift into. I've put about 1,500 miles on it since the fix and that issues has been consistent.
- I also feel that I've probably lost about 7-10% of my gas mileage for city driving since the fix....
- Acceleration does seem a bit more sluggish...

I guess it could be worse, but I definitely am less in love with my car than before, which is sad. (2014 Touraeg X - 22,000 M)

Since I have a 14 - thought I would copy/paste this here from my post of the EPA thread...

I picked up the Treg last Wednesday - I wanted to drive it a little bit before I commented too much.

After reading about the variety of everyone's experience - I wasn't sure what to expect, but I did have a few things to pay attention too. I am trying really hard not to "hear or see" anything that isn't absolutely noticeable.

Its hot here now (over 100 heat index) - so I don't know how much of a cold start experience I am getting, but it doesn't seem to be noticeably louder at idle. As noted, there is quite the difference is transmission shift patterns after a cold start. The rpms are kept noticeably higher and reluctant to shift to a higher gear when warming up. While I never put a lot of faith in the water temp gauge before - now I am virtually certain there is no correlation between the gauge reading and actual temp. The temp gauge went from cold to 200 is 2 tenths of a mile - there is no way its warming up that quickly. It doesn't stop holding the shifts until some time after this - so it must not be "warm". As a side note, I have checked my coolant temp with my OBD11 a couple of times - readings I got were ~160F - while the gauge reads 200F - I don't know who to believe.

I didn't notice the downshifting behavior at first because a lot of the trip home was highway - but after a few days driving around town - I can tell it is less aggressive and "coasts" more...but I don't find it be a problem or anything that I would work to have changed. I can always do it manually.

It is likely all imagined, but I do think the engine noise is slightly louder when driving around normally - but its slight if anything. When I give it some stick it still moves on pretty good. If I was up or down 10 HP - I doubt I would ever be able to tell. I have never towed anything very heavy - so I can't comment on towing performance. I will wait until I need to refuel to make any comments about MPG - but it doesn't seem wildly different yet (about 1/4 tank burned so far). Service rep commented that - so far- no one has come back complaining of much lower fuel efficiency. Fingers crossed.

After looking a a copy of the repair bill - I was a bit surprised at the dollar amount the dealer charged VW for the repair - $1400. I was expecting a much larger dollar figure. Aside from a few small line items - the only big ticket item was the "conversion kit" for $1120. They did fill the tank with out question too. I have not had the it quite a year yet - and I have never had to fill up with Adblue - so it will be interesting how soon a warning appears now.

I have received the final payment - that was a peace of cake. In combination with the $$$ and the warranty that comes with the repair - I think I came out pretty good. I have 53K miles - so I have a good while before I should need to be concerned about the expensive bits.

If it was that easy to "make right" I am not sure why they chose to cheat in the first place - I am sure it was pennies they were saving. I bet in hindsight...anyway I am glad to have it back, glad it appears to run just fine, and doesn't seem markedly different.

Hope that helps!

Its been 10 days since our fix was done to our '13. Here's what I noticed:
- When the engine temp is below 200 and driving in town, the trans will hold it in 3rd gear. But you can go to manual mode and upshift to 4th and 5th, return it to auto and it will hold in the upper gears till you slow down even when the engine is cold.
- When the engine is warm, I actually like the shifting behavior a lot more. Maybe because this is my wife's DD and I had the fix done while she was out of town so the transmission learned my behavior?
- Initial MPG is down by 10% (at least according to the MFD). Of course, I was driving it vs my wife and I have a heavier foot so maybe the lower MPG is not caused by the fix.
- Acceleration seems the same.
- Cold start doesn't seem any noisier, but the morning ambient temps have been in the 60's.
- There is still a little engine braking like a normal auto tranny. I was afraid it was going to be full coasting like our e-Golf going down a hill or a regular car in netural.

I have dealt with Yrktrg and he has been a stand up guy. I sent him my non-fixed tcm to read and he has followed through on his word. He returned it quickly and I am back up and running. So he now has a 2015 pre-fix tuned tcm.
