Search as I might, I can find no reference or indication in the owners manual suggesting the vehicle has a water seperator or a (WIF) sensor. Is this true? This is somewhat concerning as the most careful selection of fuel sourcing can go awry if for example you arrive at the fuel station the day they filled the tank and the water has not settled back to the bottom below the suction tube. Please educate me.

From what I understand, the stock filter has a water separating function incorporated.
If your suppliers have that much water in their tanks, I'd suggest you treat your vehicle with a kill dose of biocides and change suppliers immediately.

and old thread but did the earlier models have a water in fuel warning light?

I was talking to a seller of aftermarket aux filters and he said that the 7L diesels have a build in warning for "water in fuel"

Also said i could not fit an aux filter to a V10 due to lack of room under the hood!

I can't access my T3 service manual right now, but I recall it saying that any water trapped would be at the bottom of the fuel filter canister. There is a siphoning tool that VW calls out in the manual, but I don't see anything a turkey baster can't do. :)

The 04 V10s had a water in fuel sensor at least, I don't know if the later V10s (with the single fuel filter) do.

As others noted the fuel filter still separates water. It falls to the bottom of the filter housing and should be removed when the filter is serviced every 20k.
