I've had my 2012 Touareg for about 1 week and have about 600 miles on it. From day 2 on, when starting early in the morning (temp in the low teens), I turned the ignition to "on" position, wait for "coil/glow plug light" to turn off with foot on brake, and turn key to start - nothing. It won't turn over. Then turn key back to "on" position and try to start again. Still nothing. Next, I remove key and try again - this time it starts.
Now, every morning the 1st cold start attempt is the same - it won't turn over. Then, when I remove key and try again, it starts every time. Starts fine the rest of the time. There are no fault codes. Anyone had this issue? Or a possible repair? Dealer is stumped.

Take the car back to the dealer.

Give him the documents and keys and ask for your money back.

That might wake him up to actually getting off his arse and getting it sorted.

Get in the car, put foot on the brake, leave foot on the brake, turn the ignition to start, and let the key go... watch your dash speedo and tachometer gauge.... they should go fully clockwise, then return back to their resting position in about 2 seconds, and the engine should start. The T3 Touarag has extremely fast heating glow plugs. like 2-3 seconds worth. It is a feature on all VW common rail diesels.

Alternately, read the Owners Manual for start procedure on a TDI.

You just crank it all the way to the right, the system deals with the glow plugs. Its not an 87 Jetta where you have to go to 1/2 ignition, wait for the col to go off, then actually start.

Make sure your foot is on the brake and stays there before inserting or turning the key, and until it starts. You shouldn't have to wait for glow plugs - the computer will do that for you and sequence everything correctly. Brake, insert key, turn key. Engine turns over and starts when the computer has "all systems go" status but not before. Now you can remove foot from brake.

If that doesn't work, something ain't right...

Note, to OP, when the key is inserted and plugged in, and at 12:00 position, it is in the "on" position. When you turn it either way, left or right, while your foot is on the brake, that is the input to the brain for the "start" position. You don't have to hold it there, it's much like an on or off switch to a computer or smart phone. When you wish to shut it off, turning to either side will turn it off also.

For long-time drivers used to the "old school" ignition switch, these new start button systems (whether keyed or keyless) can seem strange at first. It was to me. :). Basically you're just telling the computer "Start when you're ready" when you turn the key or press the Start button.
