Ok folks, Here is my review of my very own 2012 Touareg TDI with saddle brown interior and blue metallic exterior. First, I personally feel like it?s the most of attractive of the mid to large size suvs. I?ve had the Touareg for 4 months and 4400 miles. In that time I have seen two other Touaregs. I have been surrounded by Lexus 350s multiple times at traffic lights. I?ll get to more on that later. Since ownership I have observed 27.2 MPG Hwy and 20.3 MPG City. This is using winter diesel which I?ve been told isn?t as good as summer diesel? Can anyone tell us what the hell the difference is and even if there is a winter gas. I hope so ?cause I expected a good solid 28MPG Hwy.

Pros; The Touareg is a nice driving confident car and is fun to drive. I purchased the Touareg after buying a BMW335d for my wife and she decided she didn?t like the Beamer and sorta took over my 2010 Toyota 4Runner Limited, thus I got stuck with the Beamer which I didn?t like so I traded for the Touareg. I provide this background for comparison reasons. I find that the ride of the Touareg is more comfortable than the the 4Runner on the HWY and only slightly better in the city. The 4Runner has a body on frame design which is quite rugged but offers a ?truck? ride. The Touareg which is a unibody design rides a lot nicer and I don?t feel as fatigued after a long hwy ride. I have not taken the Touareg off road so I can?t compare the two. I can only hope that it would be as capable as the 4Runner but having the capability of the Toyo wasn?t why I bought the Touareg. If it is, that?s simply a bonus for me.

The Infotainment system is very intuitive and easy to use. Programming the Navigation system is easy and can be done while driving which I don?t recommend, (can?t program the 4runner unless stopped and the BMW IDrive system is just ridiculously complicated and not at all user friendly.) My wife and I both have I phones and blue tooth capability is easy and reliable in the Touareg. The Touareg comes with a connection point in the glove box which I don?t use and a USB connection point on the back of the armrest which I use for charging. Streaming music from my iphone is easy and seamless and the Bluetooth phone function works great even at hwy speeds because the Touareg is very quite inside therefore the person your talking to can actually here you instead of hwy noise. The interior is pretty much flawless and the seats are very comfortable. Maybe some of you have noticed but I find the seats are larger and the seat extends out closer to your knee offering better support and co
mfort on long drives. Its winter, if you can call this year in NC winter, and the heated seats work fine.

Cons; In the 4400 miles and 4 months I?ve owned this vehicle I have had the following problems 1-vibration in the steering column at hwy speeds. 2-drivers seat moves on its on. 3-drivers mirror moves on its on. (2-3 occurs intermittently. Some days I get in the car and its like someone got in and moved everything. And no, I?m not hitting the driver memory buttons inadvertently! 4-the panoramic screen does not open and close properly. And last, the stereo is a piece of crap. That is to say the sound is horrible. Forget about putting the windows down or opening the windows, you?ll never here the stereo. It really sounds like the power is choked off, no mids and very little bass. I am not a BOOM BOOM loud kinda guy, more of an audiofile. If stereo or sound is even remotely important to you and you are dead set on a purchasing a Touareg, you better pony up the extra 7k for the executive model. I hear the Dynaudio system is very good.

I have taken the car in two the dealer twice and twice I still have the same problems. The dealer service department is filled with incompetence and there seems to be little work ethic among the service representatives. In contrast I have had impeccable results at the local Toyota and BMW dealer. VW has a LONG way to go as far as I?m concerned. I feel like I spent 52k plus tax, title, tags (56kplus) at a Walmart or a used car lot. Really, it?s almost surreal. After the second visit I googled my dealer for online reviews and they received high marks in sales but in stark contrast they get less than two stars in service. Several folks said they would have given negative stars if the option was available. I won?t get into all of my experience other than to say that I?ve been forced to call the dealer GM for resolution and as a last resort I?m going to wait for his reply and I will let you know.

Summary, Great vehicle if you can get a ?squak, and gremlin? free Toaureg. If after purchase care and service is important to you then you better check your dealer ratings. Unfortunately though I have a feeling after reading other peoples comments on this site from around the country and around the world that it?s not a dealer issue rather the VW culture. Maybe VW should stick to Bugs (pun intended) and jettas and stay out of the luxury SUV market. I mentioned Lexus 350s earlier and why there are so many on the road. Maybe its the service that Lexus gives after the sale. If anyone has any serious questions and wont a honest answer about the 2012 Touareg Lux and ONLY the 2012 Lux,shoot me a PM and I'll give you my honest answer.

Back in Finland where I'm from, we had 3 different type diesel fuels depending the season.

Normal diesel, also known as summer diesel.

Winter diesel, lower level of parafine to reduce cold temperature effect to its viscosity, this phenomena is also known as cloud effect.

Arctic diesel, lowest level of parafine, somewhere they call this as kerosine (which is for aeroplanes), suitable down to -40C (= -40F) or so but doesn't lube the injectors and pumps as well as the stuff with candle...

Diesel is more sensitive for crappy fuel especially at winter time and that is why I usually fill up at truck stops where the diesel quality has lower chance to be really crappy compared to some remote gas station where who knows how long the diesel have been sitting in the underground tank.

Now about the car itself,

Congrats for the vehicle and sorry the hear the issues.

I went through the rattle and weird noise issues with previous Audi Q5 with panorama and that was the reason we got the Touareg without panorama and this one is much better than the Audi.

2012 tdi exec i just purchased...

You say that you're expecting 28MPG on the highway. While you'll get better on non-winter fuel, and yes, there is a difference, are there any other 5000lb SUV's out there that get that? 27MPG is not that bad.

Winter fuel is a mix that keeps the fuel from gelling (turning into wax) which ultimately keeps it from flowing. When it can't flow, it can't go thru the fuel pump or the injectors or anything for that matter, so the engine doesn't run. Winter fuel has less BTU's available, so you get poorer fuel economy.

Does anyone know if this is something new on the 2012's? We don't have that on our 2011 model. I have never seen this mentioned as an available feature in any of the literature or postings anywhere. Interesting...

My eyebrows raised too CADman_ks ....

My new 2012 Executive (USA) does not have a USB as mentioned near/behind the armrest. I have a AC and DC plug in behind armrest, and DC plug in in the arm rest console. There is another cut out with cover that does not come off in the armrest console. Not sure what that would have been for...

Would love to see some pics of that interior and exterior combo...

What are your issues with sunroof?

Also, I know its not an option to everyone, but I have many VW dealerships in the dallas area. Through the process of tracking down the tdi I wanted, I spoke with all of them... There was a HUGE difference among the different dealers. Some wouldnt even drive 15 minutes to get me a tdi to test drive. One bought the truck off the boat and had it waiting for me before we even talked money. One even told me he was worried I would pull over and try to steal from him if we extended the test drive from beyond the first 3 minutes of a 30 mph loop around the dealership. And then berated me over the phone when I told him I was not going to be doing business with him.

Needless to say, I purchased from the one who got the truck for me, and even though its an hour drive, I have my service through them as well. While it hasnt been a PERFECT experience, I have been happy with the service.

IF POSSIBLE, search for a different vdub dealer. There are some better ones out there.

yeah, same here...I was about to go down to the garage and start searching, but I know I've already done that :)

USB port

My bad folks, I had plugged a cigarette lighter device plug with two USB ports in the power port behind the armrest and forgot about it. Sorry for misleading everyone. Anyway I use the plug in and keep a iPhone /itouch/iPad USB chord there always. It's more convenient than using the glovebox plug because most of the bluetooth features I use don't require me to use the glovebox plug in.
In response to what the problem is with the sunroof screen; when I open it it works fine, when I close it it comes to within about 1 inch and reopens to about 10 inches. When I try to close it from this position it opens all the way. Once all the way open repeat above. I have video of this on my iPhone which I would post if I knew how. If VW doesn't fix the issue I will post it on YouTube and give the link here. I don't want to do that until I give VW the opportunity to do the right thing.

I believe what he is referring to is the a/c outlet behind the armrest flap, in which you can plug your iphone in *with it's a/c adapter* to charge. This is what I do.

I just purchased a 2012 TDI Lux and the machine is tops throughout. My only complaint thus far -- and ThermalUp is dead on -- is the stock stereo. It is average at best. I don't know how long I will last until I have to shell $1K or $2K to upgrade it to something worthy of a $51K car.

yes stock stereo is crap...get a quality amp cross over's and quality speakers you should be happy..$2000 to do it right....i have the dyna audio in my 2012 exec love it...but i have a passanger rear door panel that rattles when cranked up...taking it in thursday for quick repair i hope good luck enjoy

Like a lot of Touareg owners, I love the car, but VW Canada is painful to deal with. It appears that they are trying to fix their infrastructure, however they have a long way to go. Many VW owners that I talk to also feel that the initiatives of the VW Canada customer care, get stymied at the dealership level. Until VW Canada "sorts out it's own house" I would recommend invoking more due diligence toward customer care when considering a VW.

I recently just upgraded the stock sound system.

Got some JL Audio components, tweeters, a polk sound processor (to ensure the speakers with the factory head unit), a Rockford amp, and a kicker Sub.

All in all, it was roughly 1800 bucks installed, and I couldn't be happier!

Like was said before, make sure you go to a shop where they know what they are doing. It's a bitch and a half to get everything wired right, and have patience, cause it will take while (two days or so) to get everything done!

I have a new 2012 TDI LUX and am happy to say after 5500 mi it has been trouble free. Now I've probably jinked myself. I did buy a 10yr, 100Kmi extended warranty,so I hope I'll not have to use it.

After a number of SUVs Sequois was the most recent, this is the best handling rig I have owned by a long shot. I get about 26 or 27 mpg around town with a little highway and mid 30's on trips on the interstates.

I have no regrets so far. JP

Can you tell me the jl audio components and what Polk audio processor you purchased. I have decided to use a processor but dont know which one to get. Thx. Joe

Memory Seat Gremlin

Hi,
Have under 1000mi on 2012 Exec. One thing I have realized is that the seat moves on its own might have to do with the way VW has decided to isolate the memory settings on the door and the memory of the kayless entry on the fob. Every car I have had the key is synched with the memory settings on the door. The Fobs however have their own memory and they "remember" the last settings and revert to that setting if you use the fob to lock and unlock the door. Its annoying.

So try to synch the memory on the fob with that on the door by instructions on the manual (I beleive you hold the unock on the fob and the memory on the door at the same time and you should hear the chime. See if that fixes it.
