2011 TDI 15k mile review

After checking out the competition I purchased a 2011 Touareg TDI Sport in April of 2011. With the odometer now at 14,000+ miles I thought it would be a good time to post a review.

1 Problems: zero problems, not a squeak, rattle or dash light.

2 Build quality: Outstanding. 11/2010 build date.

3 Interior: I really like the black perforated VTEX seats, they breath! On the hottest days last summer my back didn't sweat, this hasn't been the case with past vehicles with leather or vinyl interior. I chose black because it is so easy to keep clean. The cabin filter and rubber seals do a great job of keeping dust out of the cabin. VTEX appears to be as tough as nails.

4 Ride comfort: Very quiet at all speeds, has a vault like feeling going down the road. I did reduce the air pressure in the tires to soften the ride a bit.

5 Fuel economy: Total average hand calculated = 25.1 mpg Best tank = 33.2 mpg during 465 miles. Worst tank = 22.6 during 399 miles. My wife drives during the week without much effort for good mpg. We live about 5 miles out of town up a very steep, twisty mountain road that brings the average way down.

The 2011+ TDI is very capable of achieving very impressive mpg numbers, especially on the interstate at speeds around 60 mph. There is a dash display (mfd) that shows current mpg, this is very useful in learning how to feather the throttle for maximum mpg. There are also readings for current tank mpg, current trip mpg and long term mpg.

I have posted all of my fill ups at fuelly.com under TDI Sport. I have included all of the mfd readings for each tank. The mfd # is always higher that actual by a couple of mpg.

6 Engine and transmission performance: To me this is the most impressive attribute of the vehicle. The shift programing of the Aisin 8 speed in conjunction with the low torque curve of the TDI is BY FAR the best combination in any vehicle I have ever driven.

7 OEM tires: My personal opinion is that the oem Pirelli Scorpion tires suck! They will need replacing by 20k miles. They are like racing slicks on heavy, wet snow.

8 Torsen center differential. In a previous post I complained about the vehicles poor performance in the snow, in part I blamed the Torsen center differential because it doesn't lock. In hindsight it was the tires. I have since tested the Torsen by safely lifting one wheel off the ground. With traction control turned off that one wheel will spin all day. With traction control on the vehicle will pull itself free.

Off road experience has so far been limited to very steep areas on my property. Considering the tires the Torsen does a good job compared to an open diff. Will have more off road reports in the future.

It would be nice if VW would offer a locking rear and center differential as an option. The UK Escape package includes these features at a very little cost to weight or mpg.

9 DEF: sips def, adding it is about as difficult as adding washer fluid. See #1 above.

10 Navigation/electronics: I don't really use these features much. I do like to crack the window and listen to the turbo though. :D

In closing I must admit that I didn't purchase the Touareg because it is a VW, I did so because it is a diesel. All things considered it is the most impressive vehicle that I have owned, a 5000 lb SUV capable of towing 7700 lbs. that gets about the same fuel economy as a Honda Accord.

I am with you on all points. I use electronics a lot vs. just listening to the turbo. Like it (and simply don't care about many boys complaining about sound quality - I have a good hearing not impaired by listening too much of very loud music). Have to admit that often, against any MPG considerations, I'll shift to S and have an immense pleasure of city driving - and that's when listening to turbo makes most sense.:)

Nice write-up! It's interesting to hear how the T3's 4Motion system works in the real world. Looking forward to hearing more once owners install real tires.

Nice review. Thanks for the detail. It's a super ride.

I couldn't have said this any better. Bow Down

I have 38,000 miles on my 2011 Sport TDI. I truly love it. I have had several Ad-Blue system faults that required three visits to the dealer, resulting in complete replacement of the Ad-Blue pump and tank. It hasn't changed my opinion of the vehicle. The rear hatch opening function has been quirky, but it doesn't bother me.

I use my Treg for my business, and drive alot. It is comfortable, fun to drive, has great fuel economy (31 mpg average on 400 mile trips on the display), and I love the electronics, especially the nav system and bluetooth phone integration.

My self as well I can confirm every aspect of it. Just pass the 18k miles mark and I notice a very little noise coming from tires, Pirelli Scorpion, I had the same issue at same mileage with the previous T-reg 2009 V6 same tires, Scorpion. Sound system is garbage, I am a sound fanatic and I had the pleasure to enjoy the quality of Dynaudio on 06 Passat VR6, now i regret i did not get the executive version with all the toys on it. Great writing.

Not following you....

"I notice a very little noise coming from tires" meaning??
I don't see what the problem is

Most people, myself included, want very little noise coming from the tires...

Good for about a year. They were OEM on my 2010. By the end of the first year they were getting noisy.#-o Held off for another 5 or so months and the wife said they had to go! They still had plenty of tread at around 40,000 miles, but even with the music played at 11, they drove me nuts. I replaced them with Michelin Latitudes. Finally, peace and quiet.:joy: With 50,000+ miles and still plenty of tread, I feel they're the better choice.

Terrific review & i feel the same way about my 2010 TDI, especially after having driven it across the country & back. Best road car i can imagine, but not so efficient in the city.
The Goodyears that were OEM on my Treg only made it to 26,000 before having to be replaced so I don't understand getting to 40k w/much tread left.

Yes, had over 40 K on the Goodyears, and tread to spare. I kept them 4 to 5 psi over the numbers on the door plate. Neither my wife or I drive very aggressively. I was surprized too. Had they not been so noisy, probably could have had another 10 to 15 K of life in them.

And yes, I do agree, one of the best road trip vehicles I've ever driven. We're getting around 27 mpg on the highway, with 23-24 in mixed driving. Never had less than 20 mpg except when towing.

I'm sure you guys with the T3s are happy to have a couple more gears, and more mpg. It's a trade-off. For me, when I finally inherit the Treg from the wife, I intend to use the low-range on some serious trails in the NC mountains. But, that means I'll need to buy her a new Passat TDI.

Sound like what I'm looking for!!!! Good to know it can be done. How are your brakes holding up, the pads and rotors? Drive shaft issues?

#21 ·
Helpful review!!! Im looking at a left over 2012 TDI Sport. Moving to Maine in May. Currently in a Jeep Wrangler, wanted something more fuel efficient, that could pull my boat. Huge TDI fan, had a jetta in the past. Wanted one of these for a long time, finally came across a deal that works for me! Think Ill probably go ahead and pick it up!

Try it BEFORE you commit to make sure it doesn't have the dreaded steering wheel shake that afflicts some T3s.

#24 ·
Until you own a T3, keep your mouth QUIET!

You have got to be the most negative person on this website when it comes to the T3's

Do you even own a T3?

IF not, your input is invalid...

I have a T3, and plenty of other people have not had the issues you love to go on about.

I love my T3, have had nothing but pleasure form it. Yep had 2 different adblue issues, neither of which put the car down for more than a day...

Never ONCE have a experienced wheel shake, that didn't go away once the tires were balanced...

This is just like your comment about (i don't like the look of those brakes) Who cares what you don't like?

The thread about the HORRIFIC wheel shake is bumped to the top daily... people read what they want, people are allowed to deal with what they want. You may or may not be more anal retentive than the next guy.. I know people like you that are never satisfied, and feel the need to spread their negativity to anyone willing to listen..

I don;t care what your post count is.. i have YET to see a posting from you that was actually HELPFUL... you just spout out in every thread all the negative things about anything.....

to the OP's and anyone else... EVERY CAR BUILT TODAY could be a LEMON. take the good with the bad..If you don't want to take a chance, then ride the bus.....otherwise go out and buy a well built and terrific SUV... I love mine... My ONLY gripe is the fact that we can't get the V8 diesel version....

Nooby.. keep in mind that the average forum makes up less than 10% of owners... of that 10% how many of us have had the dreaded wheel shake... 10% of 10%..... so 1% of forum users have had an issue...

This is only one item... Every post i come across with your "input" makes it sound like the T3's are the biggest pile of heaping horse crap on the planet.....

I'm sure i'll get blasted from the mods for "venting" but the way i figure it, you just type stuff to get people stirred up for no reason...

I find it good to hear both sides of the story, so that I can make my own decisions on what to look out for on my new to me T3. If I get the shakes in my 2012 TDI, I'll have a good data base to steer the VW factory service folks to for a possible solution.

I like hearing updates. Keep it up. My car is new to me and it's pretty flawless so far. A friend of mine has had his for over 10k miles and its been perfect. Not a single issue. He due in for his first scheduled service soon and couldn't be more happy.

#27 ·
Update:D Now at 22.5k miles, still flawless. On a recent round trip to Seattle and back I got 37 mpg (hand calculated) at 60 mph, I also got passed by every other car on the road:wave:

The OEM tires are now down to 4-5/32nds I plan on replacing them with LRR tires, possibly Goodyear Assurance cs Fuel Max.

T3 issues all sound exactly like the T2 issues:

1. Adblue, yep been there done that..system replaced very early on and all is well
2. Steering shake/pump creak/whine etc. yep, been there its on the hoist now getting the whole steering rack replaced
3. When is the bad run of waterpumps going to pop up in the T3s? :)

Personally I like the 8 speed tranny, the reduced weight, improved fuel economy and better performance of the T3. Besides, they aren't making T2s any more..

I appreciate Nooby's posts and his views on the T3 -- regardless of whether he owns one. I don't agree with all of his posts, and every now and then he can be a bit on the negative side, but Nooby is a real contributor to this forum and has a wealth of knowledge on the TReg that this forum benefits from.

+1. NoobyT is annoyingly pommie but really very helpful, patient and very funny. Cracks me up.

I've had the shakes. VW put it right for me professionally and now on my second T3, which is an exceptionally good 4x4 for this particularly fussy antipodean. Far more reliable than my last Mercedes, and better than my Lexus Hybrid in almost all areas.

That's the story. Ignore him if he annoys you. I think he's great value and very, very helpful, but hey, a fewe beers late at night and you can say things you don't mean. Had to do that with Oilslurper on the OZ site who drove me crazy with his inane comments - then got a message from these same illustrious moderators to stop stalking him!

I was wrong - Oilslurper too seems like a nice guy with a different perspective and way of expressing himself.

BOT - interesting review and all valid points on the T3. Totally reliable so far and like all motors these days a few problems, some exaggerated. The one weakness is the dealer network. Poor in my opinion, certainly in the UK. I'd buy another though.

(How come you can't edit the thread after publishing on this site? Seems a bit silly - you might want to moderate your comments once sober and/or cool again).

Back to the OP subject – T3 TDI 15K review… Mine has slightly more than 15K miles on its odometer. In one sentence: the longer I drive it - the better I like it!

I have the HD radio replacement done (see related thread originated by Eugene-Dave) a month or so ago. This fix (the whole HD radio module replacement) made a very noticeable improvement in quality of audio system sound – EQ operation in particular. I was satisfied with audio quality before replacement, but this new radio/EQ/amp – whatever is included in this module – definitely is worth a trouble. I am not sure that I am not hallucinating, but it sounds like it did also enable ambient noise analysis function by means of sampling on built-in microphone - audio volume adjusts to compensate for increased noise levels related to higher speeds. Does anyone else observes the same, or I am hallucinating?

Nooby, are you saying that the T3 with 4motion is 95% as capable off road as 4xmotion? In my experience the electronics that you mentioned KILL momentum and sometimes it is all about momentum.

I really wish VW would offer 4xmotion (locking center and rear diff ) with air suspension on the T3 here in N.A. I would buy one in a heartbeat!

I'm off road every day. I've never used the gizmo knob - I just point and squirt and the car goes where I want it to.

The limit for most people will be at what point they start to risk damage to paint or bodywork, or the underside of their car.

Given that limit then, like I said, a well driven T3 will go most places people will want - and I know that from personal experience.

There will be those, like yourself, who can perhaps test the car further and will want more capability, but that's not where I was coming from.

I don't understand why VW would not make the Escape [4xmotion and air] available to all markets.

It would be a premium product at a premium price but perhaps VW are leaving that to their subsidiary, Porsche, or perhaps [and here I risk getting into trouble again!] they recognise their US/Canadian dealers aren't up to the mark in selling or servicing such a complex beast!

THIS is exactly what i was trying to get at with my rant thread

Update. Now at 32k miles. Still zero issues!

Since last report.

Replaced OEM tires at 28k.

Self installed VW tow hitch and wiring.

Running 235/65/17 General Altimax Arctic studded snow tires on 17" Canyon wheels when the snow gets deep, great combo.

Replaced wiper blades with oem blades.

I recently checked the OEM brake pads. They show very little wear.

Still the best vehicle I have ever owned. Hard to believe how solid it is after 32k miles. Still blown away by the build quality.
