What an amazing vehicle. Everything from mileage to performance and quiet and Dynaudio stereo, just great.

But driving north from SW Florida to Pennsylvania to pick my son up at school was a huge surprise. First, including all stops, from driveway to final destination hotel, including also 90 minutes of almost no movement from PA border to 476, mileage was 24.3. I was not dogging it but I wasn't doing 90 either. Second - made great time because it is so comfortable, one day I only stopped once (600 miles plus the 90 minutes mentioned above). Just listened to tunes, a podcast, even plenty of silence.

I see a few threads with folks debating getting 2010 or wait or something else - I am absolutely blown away. I debated waiting also, but am glad I pulled the trigger. Rain and dark are simply not the problems they once were, in the sense of eyesight and capability, just can plow through without being tired in the same way, or limited by the rain. Confidence in traffic also, I think makes for safer driving overall.

I want to say thanks to everyone who posts regularly, I am still debating VAG-Com, would like to not have shiny chrome surround at gear lever (obviously not as much sun in Germany as in Florida), have had the water come down a bit from liftgate. But, the xenon lights, sport mode, Dynaudio, the look of the car, all just as you guys promised.

Last, a couple of questions - any ideas for taking a 4WD course near SW Florida? And, how hard is it to swap out that shiny chrome surround?

Great review--thanks!

And same impression here about the V6 TDI. Most people who experience mine can't believe it's a diesel or delivers the mileage it does. With a daily drive of about 60% highway, 40% city, here's what I've averaged:

Going with the regular (10k-mi) interval here.

Just a quick update - 4 months, now at 20,500. Still, an amazing vehicle. A few trips up and down the East coast and one to Illinois. One trip had an extra 750 pounds of lead (yes, literally) in the back and barely noticed it. Used a Yakima cargo basket for one trip, can get a lot of gear on that thing. The boys thought the five lacrosse sticks on sides and back of the basket looked pretty cool. But the nice middle ground is a couple of XL Cabela's dry bags (with just cross bars). Found some bungee cords with carabiners that worked great with the cargo basket.

Mileage (TDI) - Around town I get around 20 or so, depending on traffic and whether I am in, uh, Sport mode or not. Highway mileage at the speed limit of 70 I get right around 25 or 26. And I think one stretch of 60-65 I saw around 27+ mpg. Based on a sophisticated modeling program I have developed, I would estimate that such a vehicle, if equipped with an Escort 9500xi, and allowed to drive at 80-85 mph, might yield about 22-23 mpg. With cargo on top, mileage would theoretically be around 19-20 mpg. This modeling program includes traffic variables which slow the vehicle down to 70-75 for random intervals.

Figure on 22-23 mpg at a steady 80-85 mph, depending on winds. That's an average at those speeds to & from the CO Rally.

Just turned 8k and we really love, love, love this solid diesel rig! Excellent road manors/feel, great visibility and driving position, strong brakes, trick air suspension, tows like-a-motha, super quite, top shelf materials fit-and-finish, purposeful looks, killer Dynaudio system and oh that diesel power! Bow Down

We average 23.5 in a city/NYC highway mix. The long LD weekend VT run yielded 26.5 in a lets just say over 65 average mph.

Must admit the only bitch is the RNS510. So close to being great but seriuosly lacking in execution department. Too slow on start up, not intuitive in programming locations and corrections (and it really sucks when you make a mistake on entry and have to start over), bad directions and fails to recognize your route override, no real voice activation, Sirus live traffic accuracy is questionable but it looks cool :confused2:, did I mention it's so sloooooooooow...

Of course the T3 is going to be sweet but I have had a lot of luck on end of production run models. The T2 will still look the part years from now (and hopefully run as stoutly) I don't think the C-pep can say the same.

I would have to say that the nav / back-up camera is my only complaint. Im starting to think that VW will never come out with a firmware update to speed up this nav / back-up camera. They either dont give a damn or are really stumped on how to update the system. My patiences are running out but a small price to pay for a great ride.

Still enthusiastic?

I am considering 2010 TDIs instead of waiting for the 2011s. Seems likely there are some good deals out there right now.

What do you all think? I know all the details aren't in yet on the new ones, but does the 2010 do the trick? Any particular strengths/weaknesses to consider?

I'm thrilled overall (sans the RNS510 NAV). One thing to consider with the T3 ready to deliver is any existing inventory will continue to be discounted. Plus the T3 has some upgraded content that might be of interest. You might want to compare the two before you buy.

I just picked up a 2010 V6 TDI myself last weekend and got it for $38k... not a bad deal. I am not a fan of the removal of the two speed transfer case and locking differential on the new 2011 models. Saving money on the 2010 was a no brainer for me. ;)

Yep, it was a new one... basic TDI package with no add ons. The 2010's come pretty well loaded though with the Sirius and Bluetooth, dimming mirrors, etc. :) Original MSRP was $45k

There was no auto dimming mirrors other then the one on the windshield. They dropped the outside autodimming in 08 I believe or the 09. Mine is pretty loaded and does not have them. I miss them from my 04 as well as power folding mirrors and memory seats. So they are not as loaded as previous years for sure imo.

Hmmm, according to my vehicle sticker I have interior as well as exterior dimming mirrors. Still, I feel better off having a 2010 with 2-speed transfer case and locking center differential...unlike the 2011. ;)
