So from my previous posts... I hit a deer and they had to do work on the intercooler. Ever since then, i'm getting CEL. They are saying it is the fuel pump now (in tank).

But oddly enough, today, I'm getting MAF error P0101. The other one I've been getting is the bank 1 lean (forget error off hand).

I am going to throw a huge fit here soon once I get word back from someone here... with the lean I thought it was an air leak somewhere.

So with the MAF, could be an air leak. I was checking the air box and there is a small hose attached to the side. It is hooked in on the metal heat shield. It has nothing on the other end. Anyone know what this is for?

I also had a little diesel exhaust smell again in the engine compartment. Al this started happening after the accident and it being fixed. Does anyone have the hose layout for the turbo? What goes where? I don't know if something wasn't hooked up right or what.

I also, when pulling the air filter box off, noticed diesel exhaust smell coming up through the box. Very very very strange. I swear they jacked something up...

Any diagrams would be helpful. IF anyone know whats that tube is supposed to be hooked up to, that would be awesome too. I'll wait before I make a call.

Fan freaking tastic. That is great. I'll look through those.

I'm cleaning the MAF right now and cleaning two cigarette butts from my air filter box. Very new looking... I think the guy that did the body work put them in there. No other idea how they got in there... wtf.... come on man.

Can anyone validate I should smell a little diesel exhaust from the air box? Right after I stopped running the car and pulled into the garage, I took the air box off. I noticed a little smoke come out (very faint). Smelling it, it smelt like maybe exhaust? Is there an EGR system in the TDIs? Could something be stuck open/closed allowing exhaust in? I have nothing on EGR for the codes though.

I smell diesel exhaust faintly in the engine compartment too. Any thoughts of what I can look at would be greatly appreciated.

Makes no sense....there is a tube thatt goes from the cyclonic oil separator to the turbo inlet ( you can see it as it is the only rubber tube connected to the top of the turbo inlet) any blow-by gasses from engine go there to the turbo. All gases should be forced to the charged air side of the turbo and not be making their way to the fresh air intake.

The air filter box is not far from and above the exhaust manifold on that side. Maybe your exhaust manifold is leaking?

Maybe one of your intercooler hoses have a loose connection and is allowing the gases I spoke of previously out, your charged air is leaking/your loosing pressure and giving you the MAF code. Check all of the charged air connections of the intercooler system.....I'm guessing here

zagg... I found all sorts of good. Twice to the dealership from the deer accident..I reported a exhaust type smell... they come back with fuel pump. Which may be going out, who knows... BUT...

Took the turbo hoses off and started inspecting. I found a split hose. It is just under the air box (to the passenger side intercooler). It is pretty close to the air inlet for cool air (right before the air box).

So i'm going to go speak to the manager. I think i finally lost faith in the dealership. I always say... if you want something done right, you do it yourself. I spent $250 replacing the fuel filter they recommended too. About 10k before the schedule change. I have not done their survey yet and may end up calling VWoA. Pathetic...

So a few questions. Does anyone know any place to buy aftermarket higher quality hoses? My brother is checking with his diesel mechanic buddy. VW wants like $258 for the replacement factory hose. My brother is thinking they make kits to probably replace all the rubber hoses with higher quality for less. Not sure.

Also (see pics below), After getting the hose off (after finding hole), I noticed ice at the intercool connection. I know this hole has been spraying a little oil from the small blowby on the fan shroud. Obviously the pressure would do that. Would it also suck in water/snow? I'm just trying to find out what came first, the chicken or the egg. IF I have a leak in the intercooler somewhere and water is getting in, i could see it settling at this point (lowest) and freezing. Then the tear would have happened from pressure not going anywhere. But if the hole formed first, could water get sucked in and freeze? Meaning the tear came first?

Any thoughts, please let me know. Anything else I should look at while I got this apart?

Personally I try to stick to OEM parts, especially for something like this. Dealers may sell at MSRP or a slight discount over the counter, but you can often order online from many dealers, using their eStore, at a considerable discount. Many of them have free ship to dealer and you just pick up the parts, or you can have parts shipped directly to you at additional cost. I'm guessing about the part number (7L6145738C), but if it's correct the MSRP is $258 and my dealer sells it for $186 if I order direct online (eStore).

Wish I could help you with your questions, but many of the symptoms/codes you've experienced could be related to a split hose. Hope it solves your problem, and good luck!

Well just an update...

Dealership said that the hole wasn't there when they checked it. I don't agree with that. I think they completely missed it. I replaced the hose with a new OEM (thanks Tom for the info). I put it back on the scan tool I have and the trim was almost steady at 1. RPMs didn't bounce much. Like 1 or 2 RPMs each way while it idled. No exhaust smell from the front or 'oil/engine' smell. It smelt very clean up there while it ran.

I cleared the codes right before and none have come back. They normally come back within 10 seconds as pending. After a few restarts of the VW, they will trigger the CEL. So they are not even pending. I drove it around last night, took it to the car wash and even got on it a bit. It feels like itself before the accident.

So thanks for all the help folks. I'm happy again and so is the VW. Breathing like it should.

That's great news, hope that problem is now solved. I might have mentioned that we had a recurring, lingering set of problems that were all solved by fixing a hose in the charged air path that had a very small split. We bought our 09 with 22k miles on it, and from looking at service records the PO brought it in for repair multiple times without a resolution -- I expect that played a large part in him/her getting rid of it in the first place. Anyway, with persistence you got yours fixed and that's always good. It's also helpful to others that you reported back.
