My wife's 2007 V6 Touareg has a noisy valve train after the engine is started when the engine has set for at least 4 hours. After the engine has started, the noise will go away after about 30 seconds. The oil level is fine, I have changed the oil and the filter recently. Any ideas what may be causing this issue? I guessing that the engine oil is draining back into the oil pan after a few hours, but not sure how to fix the problem. Thanks for any help.

So I think you might need more posts to post a link, so entertain us and respond in separated posts to help your initial count:

Did it start after an oil change?

Is the oil the full synthetic 5/w40?

Is the oil filter OEM manufactured and good quality?

One in a million, but wrong filter might prevent pressure buildup speed. Same with oil. If not using it, you might switch to the VW approved Castrol. Different oil manufactures have slightly different grade weights and viscosity and this could be an issue here.

Someone at Vortex had this and decided to do the chains and everything (generally agreed to be a source). The fly wheel was also inspected and a new flywheel ordered, but there was zero difference in the new and old flywheel play. After chains, guides, and tensioner the thing still sounded the same, but at a slightly reduced volume (in other words not worth it to me). VW points to the source being initial low oil pressure at start up leaving the valves with a rattle until pressure is achieved, I partially believe this as well as clearances at cold are greater and naturally will result in more noise / clatter...had an 88' Jetta 16v that ticked like a diesel until all the sudden it was warm (took four minutes) and it would stop...it did this day one and at 300k...sometimes worse and sometimes not so much?????? who knows.

This is my first VR6 engine, I've always had Volkswagens with 4 cylinder engines, everything from my 1960 36hp 1200 flat 4 to my daughters 2.0 TSI engine in her Passat.

Of course, when I tried to take a video of it yesterday and again this morning, the noise was only there for a few seconds.

I must profess I am NOT the most knowledgeable on oil types and brands. That said:

Mobile 1 certainly has a good following and their 0W40 synthetic oil is VW 502.00 approved. Many profess them (Mobile 1 to be one of the best...or the best), however the VW manual does prefer 5W40 full synthetic 502.00 oil over 0W40. The zero as you may know is the winter SEA equivalent cold temperature performance of the oil, so at a colder temperature the oil would be "thinner" than 5W40.

The article I read (in order to have the little knowledge I have to write this) indicated that multi-grade oils (so 5W30 or 5W40 as opposed to SEA 30 or SEA 40) deteriorate faster and start behaving more like the lower winter rating at temp (not good). Also multi grade oils can induce sludge as opposed to non "Winter" rated oils.

I have long been considering bumping my oil changes to every 5k miles versus the standard 10k for other reasons, but this just gives me another reason.

As you likely know the 3.6 has an "oil reservoir" that doesn't allow some oil to drain after shut down so that their is oil there to restart. However, it has been my experience that this reservoir either does drain (over several hours) or doesn't do much altogether. It could be the "thinner oil" at cold temps is easier to drain from this reservoir and therefore you have more dry run time to get oil all the way from the pan to the top of the head.

Anyone else that knows more on oil types PLEASE chime in here...

Lastly, (and I am hesitant to share this because results may very) I have run 0W40 oil and recharged it almost immediately because of start up racket...I hated. HATED how it sounded at cold start. But, like I said experiences may vary...

Thank you for the oil info. I've used Mobil 1 in all of my vehicles for years with good results or at least no bad results. I may try the 5W40 on the next oil change to see if the noise goes away.
This morning I took yet another video and the rattle noise lasted about 18 seconds.
