Whooohooo - can't wait.

Crack on!!

WOW!! This has been an absolute joy to read. I have an 06 V10 and am dreading the day that I will need to do an engine out service (which should probably happen sooner than later, but I lack the funding to take on this big of a project at them moment). I am glad to see that us DIY people can do a lot of this work ourselves without having to take it to the dealer or a local shop and pay the big bucks to do it.

Please keep us informed as you keep moving forward.

Also, I may pm you to see what the total cost is at so I can get an idea for when I have to do this.

AWESOME job!!!

Things went very well today! Got the engine installed, the drivetrain is all hooked up, suspension connected, most of the wiring is connected to the engine, exhaust system all connected, and air filter housings installed. It is a lot of work to install this stuff, but also a bit fun at the same time. It was a great day, and I am really pumped to get this running again! I've had it torn apart since February, and I have really missed driving it. With a bit more luck, I think I'll be able to fire it up tomorrow. Fingers crossed!!!

All right, I need some help. I got the bare necessities connected to the engine, all coolant lines, fuel lines, air intake lines, etc... I have tried starting it 7-8 times or so and it won't fire up. It cranks over just fine, sounds really strong, but it won't go. I'm an idiot when it comes to VCDS. I've primed the fuel system using the fuel pumps about 5 times or so, but I don't know what else to look at or try as far as settings go.

Any help would be much appreciated. Oh, and I did see that it is picking up the engine RPM when cranking - 168 rpm or so...

I should also mention, I have a battery charger connected to the starting battery. When I turn the key to start the car, the MFD says "engine starting" then when it starts to crank, goes black. Is this normal?

SHE RUNS!!!!! WOOOO HOOOO!!!! I just needed to crank it a bit more, I guess having the entire engine fuel system apart and new pumps installed it just needed a bit more time to start up. I let it run for just a bit, didn't see any oil, fuel or coolant leaking. Shut it off, then turned the key and she fired right up like it used to. You guys have no idea how happy I am to have it run again! I have missed my V10!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry, but I won't believe you until there's video evidence . . .

Thanks everyone, I appreciate the fact that you guys have stuck with this thread and enjoyed it. Nooby, I actually laughed out loud when I read your last post, I thought it was hilarious!

I took the old (new) girl for a short drive today. I didn't go far because my AC system is not charged, and I don't want to fry the compressor. I have an appointment Monday afternoon to get the alignment done, and to get the AC system re-charged.

I didn't run into many problems when getting the car running again, the biggest one was a fuel leak that I had @ the fuel filter housing. It was leaking quite a bit of fuel at the large cover plate, and when I removed it to see what the problem was, fuel spilled everywhere leaking down onto the back of the engine, turbos, trans, etc... The only other issue that I had was when we were installing the engine back into the chassis, we had a hell of a time trying to get the steering shaft from the rack to not bind when mating up with the steering shaft from the steering column. There is a plastic piece that slides in between the two and I broke a bit of that off when it bound up once, but the problem was remedied and all is well.

Things I noticed right off the bat - The rough vibration that I was having at idle in gear is now gone. It is the smoothest that I have felt it idle in a long time. The only thing that I can think of is that the wear that was occurring between the cams and tappets was causing the funky vibrations that could be felt in the brake pedal. Time will tell though, I really only took it for a short run of 7 miles, and I don't think that I got the engine oil temperature up to full operating temp. Also, I can now hear the turbos spooling up better. They are louder than the stock ones, and I am totally cool with that, I love the sound of dual turbos spooling!

It was a lot of work to do this job, I think that the hardest part was removing/installing the front of the vehicle. Removing/installing the engine is really not that difficult, if only I had a two post lift and a scissor table..... Maybe one day!

Maybe everyone is sick of hearing from me, but I thought that I'd give another update on this. Yesterday I got the AC system recharged, and it blows ice cold air again, hooray! It's been hot here, even driving the Treg the 25 miles from my hangar to the dealer was a sweaty ordeal. Anyway, got an alignment done and the AC recharged and now I can finally drive it!

It definitely needs a tune, in a really bad way. I have much lower power than I did before below 2000 rpm. But right around 2100 or so, it just takes off even with part throttle and wants to just keep pulling past 3000 like it's no big deal! I've contacted Malone Tuning, and have sent them my original ECU file, just waiting for the first tune to show up, then the custom tuning can start from there....

But the good news is that so far I have no oil or fuel leaks. When I park overnight in my garage, I don't have a large oil slick the next morning underneath it, and I am extremely happy about that.

Kinda hard to feel bad for your lack of A/C when you said you had to drive from your AIRPLANE hangar to the dealer. LOL!!! (Just kidding!) : D

HA! Yeah, I am a helicopter mechanic, it was a lot easier to have the Treg at work where all my tools are.... Go figure :smile2:
The ships that I work on are not mine. I can barely afford the Treg, let alone a $750K helicopter. If you thing a V10 engine is pricey, wait till you see the checks that my clients have to cut to Rolls-Royce for overhauls!

I take it back, since you're a heli mechanic! I do aerial photography and I fly in those things! Did I mention how much I LOVE YOU GUYS??!!! Ha ha!!!!

I usually rent little Sikorsky 300c's and they're pricey enough!! Good thing they the the doors off when I go for a ride. My jaw dropped when they told me how much just a door cost!!!

Ok, so one of you fixes choppers and, now, V10s, and one of you flies choppers to take pictures . . .

So where is THE V10 video . . . . !?!?!

You Guys crack me up! I usually work on the 300C bigger cousin the MD500's. The 300C's are great ships, relatively easy to work on. I like pilots that appreciate the mechanic, it makes me try harder to make it perfect! I'm all about the aerial photography of a V10 hauling ass across the desert, that would be fun to do, I just don't want to foot the bill for the fuel and the ship!

well done on the rebuild. be interested to hear how it goes after the tune.

Well, I just got the first tune for it last night. I loaded it up, and then went for a short test run. All I can say is WOW! It woke the beast up, I was actually slipping both of the front tires when I punched it from a standing start in sport mode. It is a night and day different vehicle with the tune. And this is just the beginning. I need to do some data logging and check out the boost levels vs. what it's calling for, and then send the info back to Malone Tuning and get it tweaked. I had Malone do a custom tune for me on my 06 Jetta TDI that I used to have, and I was very happy with it, and with the level of attention that I got from Mark Malone. Anyway, the tune needs to be refined, if I am doing about 1500 or so RPM, let off the throttle, then get back into it, it rolls some serious coal. That's not what I am after, and I know that it can be tweaked to lessen that effect. But I thought my rig was fast before I did all of this, I was mistaken!

I'll keep you guys posted on what goes down with this, but I did want to tell you that when I blanked out my EGR Ports, it started throwing EGR codes, and turned the CEL on. Well, the tune I got deleted the EGR and O2 sensors from the System, so replacing them was a waste of money. I should have just blanked those out as well. Live and learn, I suppose....

Oh, one other thing. I am not a turbo nerd where I understand all of the numbers like the inducer size, exducer size, etc... but here are the specs of my turbos for those of you that are fortunate to know what they mean: Inducer 42.95mm, Exducer 59.40mm. So from what Tri-State told me, the stock exducer size is a 52mm, the upgraded turbos are usually 56mm, but mine are 59mm. So I guess I have 59mm Turbos, not 56mm.
