Hello all,
I am new to this forum but have been reading everything I can on ClubTouareg about my Touareg to familiarize myself with it. Tons of awesome info on this forum, btw.

I have just purchased a 2004 Touareg used about a month ago and have worked out a lot of issues with it including kessy rebuild, tranny reprogram to ROW 4200, getting rid of NAV accept screen, unclogging drain under alarm horn and lots of little things.

Anyway, I have an odd issue with the Hatch. The neither the key-fob nor the hatch switch next to the gas door release switch will release the hatch lock.
I do not have the motorized hatch, it is manual.

Here is what gets me. I have VCDS cable so I checked address 46 Central Conv. module (7L0-959-933-D).
I can look at the block for the drivers door hatch switch and watch it receive the request each time I pull the switch up. So it is receiving the request to open the hatch.
Then I ran through the output tests and when I got to the hatch release test, It worked perfectly and released the hatch lock.

Here is what I am wondering. I intermittently get Fault 01517 in Address 09 Cent. Elec that reads as follows.
Control Module for Trailer/towing Sensor(J345)
014 - Defective - intermittent

Is it possible that the Touareg will not open the hatch if it thinks there is a trailer attached?

I don't know, but maybe you could pull the fuses for the towing module, and see if that allows the hatch to open? Your manual has a section in back that tells you what fuses are where.

Joseph, I'm not sure I understand the issue here. The tailgate switch next to the gas door release switch and the key-fob tailgate button (middle button), all they do is unlock the tailgate (if it were locked). It wont release the tailgate, you still have to manually go to the tailgate, press the release handle and manually pull it up.

I'm a little confused too -- tailgate controls are not the same as the hatch controls. The hatch is the glass only part of the tailgate (to me). My hatch releases only by pushing on the little button just under the wiper center post. The remote pushbutton on the fob allows the release button to function (when locked) but doesn't release the hatch.

That makes sense then. I was under the impression that the key button and drivers door button functioned like the trunk release on my 06 Jetta.

I understand what you are saying though. The buttons just unlock the hatch to allow you to physically press the release buttons located on the hatch.

Thanks rigasr and Fourdiesel for clarifying that for me, much appreciated!

Yes, my Passat does the same as your Jetta, it actually releases the trunk.
I suspect the reason they dont do this with the Touareg is because the Touareg has a hatch and not a trunk lid. Can you imagine the Touareg fully loaded with groceries or tools or anything and you accidentally press the trunk release on the fob and you are going 70mph on a highway? Things will be flying out all over the place.

Oops...sorry...i misunderstood the question/problem.

Screwed up thing is this can happen on the newer ones with the lift gate that does open via the button on the drivers door or the remote. There was a post about it some time ago that someone hit by accident in a parking lot while moving. It should imo disable after the vehicle is in gear, but it doesn't.
