So VW dropped Xenons from package 2 for 2007, and they're now only as a stand-alone $1200 option (directional active Xenon's).

Anyhow, I just bought a White/Teak '07 V8 and love it, other than the Halogen headlights.

Does anyone have a recommendation of after-market Xenon ballasts and bulbs to install in the fixed housing?

I understand that they won't be self leveling, but neither are the Xenon's in my Acura TL, and it doesn't bother me.

(I'm NOT looking to replace the housing since so many people have complained about wiring incompatibilities. And I do NOT want rice-burner fake blue halogens from the Walmart down the street.)

You need a set of 50 watt bulbs and ballasts.

I did alot of research in regards to this for my old 04. In theory a set of 50 watt xenons should do the trick. 50 watts to overcome the check lights error which is designed to detect low voltage issues.

Thanks for the info. Any ideas on brand? I've seen the Hella kits, but have only seen 35watt kits.

Ok, do you know of a good brand that would look like HID?
Hoen Xenonmatch Titanium - available here:

Come on guys. These are just 70w Halogens.

My .02 on all of the ricer bulbs:

A) I would suspect these will set off the check lights indicator in the MFD and the cluster because of incorrect wattage.

B) If you've had HIDs before you know these suck in comparison.

C) You immediately put yourself in the "wanna-be" category. I see Civics with these bulbs all the time and shake my head.

First of all, whitema, my response was to Memo who was looking for a Halogen bulb which "looked like" HID - in other words, has the same color temperature as the HID bulbs used in the Touareg.

The Hoen Xenonmatch Titanium bulbs match the Touareg Xenons very well - I use them in my "flash to pass" bulb position which is VAG'd for the six-light-salute so they also come on with the Xenons when High Beams are selected.

Second, I really do not know what you mean by "ricer bulbs." So take your $0.02 and :censored:

My opinion of aftermarket HID bulbs in the Touareg is that they are not well advised. Either pony up for the OEM Xenons or put in whatever Halogen bulbs suit your fancy.

From what I understand, there are very few halogens that truly "look like" the OEM Xenons. The Hoens seem to be the most accepted on here, and are probably the closest thing in the halogen world that comes close to the color of the OEM Xenons. Do they perform like the OEM HID's, probably not. HID is a hard play to follow, and I don't think a halogen, at automotive wattage levels, can touch it.

Adding a true OEM Xenon after-the-fact has been proven to be not exactly feasible, at least not easily (or cheaply) done. While there are aftermarket xenon kits available, you don't get the range control and such. Not to mention, you need to hack the wiring in a very expensive and electrically complex vehicle to install them. Not really a good idea.

Basically, if you want the HID "look" in your Touareg, without messing with wiring and such, go Hoen.

If someone successfully (or has successfully) puts an aftermarket kit in, please post which one you used, details on your installation, and your results (light output, blinding oncoming drivers, bulbs burning out, Check lights warnings, etc). I've seen some kits online, and they all seemed/sounded like cheap items with crappy quality, regardless of the cost of the kit. I was looking at them for my streetbike, since the headlights are rather dim, especially compared to the retina-frying xenons on my Touareg.

Also, at $50 a pair, these are hardly the Wal-Mart specials for 12 bux that the ricers tend to use. Those bulbs are actually much dimmer than the normal halogen bulbs, since the colored coating actually kills off light output to make it a different color. The Hoens seem to do things a little differently than the el-cheapos, and as far as I know, don't suffer the low output issues of the cheapies.

Mine are Phillips Diamond Vision - not cheap to buy but personally behind the lens in the Toaureg, they really look a lot nicer than the yellowish standard globes. Regardless of whether you are trying to imitate Xenons or not, the fact is the whiter lights look a lot nicer asthetically!!

And thats my 0.02cents

Ok, Whitema is looking for a real HID alternative to his halogens. He is NOT looking for MORE rice burner halogens like the Hoens. He probably is not trying to impress oncoming drivers with his 'cool' white colored headlights. He probably wants the actual benefit of having HID headlights.

I wish I could help you, but I have OEM HID already, though I wish you the best of luck, it may be a deceptively challenging task.
