I am told by a dealership that Wifi WLAN is not available in all T3s sold in Australia and that some would have them accidentally  Just like some Passat's have TRAFFIC option included accidentally ..apparently!

BS or TRUE?

And thus they may not be able to do anything with the firmware on my RSN850 considering it is never meant to be? Upset now :anger:

I know from another post that WLAN is included without getting into the Green menu for some Australian released T3s.
Just trying to confirm if that is the case and I will make sure the dealership updates my system under warranty or if I have to shell out some money to enable this feature!

Can any T3 2011 (sept) owners or later confirm?

Our MY14 150TDI with the RCD550 has the Wifi WLan, it is part of the Premium Blutooth and accessed via the MFD phone settings.. Is this the same as the RNS850 Wifi Wlan?
This is interesting...the Blacktown dealer has no clue of this feature in Touaregs..need to find another dealer.

Ours never told us, I just found it by exploring the night we got it, I left no menu or button un touched!.. Id bet if I asked them and probably most other qld dealers about it they would be oblivious to it. When was the last time you spoke with a sales person and they could tell you more about a car (or anything really) that you didn't already know!!?

I've a MY12 T'Reg with RNS850. I checked the vehicle data report (typically not given to customers) which says the vehicle is equipped with "Radio navigation system RNS 850 ROW", but two other related items that are not included are,

1) Compass/traffic sign display/traffic signs recognition
2) TV reception/digital radio reception.

I went through every line items on this 5-page report, which did not make any references to WIFI or wireless! That makes me to think such option (even if purchasable) not available on my T'reg at the time of delivery (Jan 2012).

Yes this is true for the two items you listed. But as someone mentioned earlier, WLAN is not documented but is still available of some T3s.
So you don't have the WiFi/WLAN menu either?

Can't see the point in this option ? Why not just use your phone as a Wi Fi hot spot ? Am I missing something ?

The WLAN is documented in my T3. Its on the RNS850 instruction manual.

But I've stopped using it for a while coz if I've got a separate SIM in the system, even though my mobile is bluetooth connected to the 850, incoming calls won't be displayed coz the embedded SIM seems to be overriding.

Since I play music quite loud.. I need the 850 to show incoming calls.

Mobile WiFi eats battery too quickly, most phones get heated as well and I am on a corporate data plan (with rules). Same is true for a standalone WiFi dongle .. idea is use it if available.
I have a dedicated SIM on a data plan for kids and adults entertainment on the road.

OK so there is no need if you have a decent phone . I run my wi fi hotspot all the time I am in the car, phone is on charge so no big deal. Only big advantage might be if there is a dedicated ariel so coverage is a little better. Is the WiFi 4 G or better ?

All the Tregs equiped with RNS850 have the WiFi module installed. VW Australia have them disabled as that they not allowed to have them on ( as they said). I had my GPS updated few months ago and now i have my WiFi hotspot enabled and working fine. After the GPS was upgraded i had a phone call from the dealer saying, VW Australia have told them it is illegal for them to have the WiFi hotspot enabled and if i try to mess with it to turn it on the warranty will be void. Anyway they don't know what they doing, as when they updated my GPS only (not the firmware) they had the WiFi hotspot enabled. So it shouldn't be too hard for someone to enable it via VCDS or Green Menu.

Interesting your dealers view on what is illegal and voiding any warranty recourse.
If you as the owner choose to modify your vehicle in any way than that is your call not VW Australia or the dealership position to play bully boy games.

You could apply the same theory in changing wheels, say your vehicle came with the OEM VW 20" alloys and you choice to fit Audi 21" rims. They still work as designed without affecting your vehicle and your warranty is still valid.

I had a simular experience with my partners Golf, I had enabled via VCDS the TMC to operate on the GPS. After a map upgrade service I quickly checked to see if this was still working, it was not. Questioning the dealer they stated that that was not authorised via VW Australia and they were directed to turn off the TMC. When I explained to them that they had no right to modify the car without our authority as the car was not property of VW Australia they stood down. I then demanded that they return the TMC on, which they did.
As for warranty issues, unless it is proved by the manufacture that your modifications caused the problem then you are still covered.

I would love to switch this on...so many devices that need internet...how can I turn it on?

Wifi hotspot came enabled on the r line. Works well but frankly have no use for it yet. Plus the internal sims if used cuts out external Bluetooth connection disabling the phone handsfree, now who cane up with this damn idea!
Hope they or someone comes up with a fix here!
Should have the option so internal sim provides data only for rns and external handsfree remains connected via BT in parallel
