How big of a difference as far as driving, acceleration, ride quality, passing ability, etc is there between a V8 and V6 for this year?

I'm looking to buy a used one, and just wanted to get some opinions about the differences.

I can't find a dealer in town that has the two so I can drive both. My man card tells me to only go after a V8, but just wanted to get some opinions about the capability of the V6. I don't do a whole lot of towing, but want to off road a little bit and wanted to ensure that there is enough power behind the VR6 so I won't get stuck or anything.

Thanks in advance!!!!!!

I test drove a VR6 Touareg before buying my V8 and although the VR6 FSI has 280 HP, the vehicle weighs 2 and a half tons and it felt a little sluggish IMHO.

The fuel economy is similar between the 2 motors but the V8 came with leather and a few other goodies as well. The extra 70 HP the V8 has in addition to the sound of the German V8 is hard to pass up.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking as well. I sort of compare to my dad's Jeep Cherokee. he owned a v6 that felt like it took forever to get up to speed, had very little power, couldn't pass a semi truck. He recently bought one with a V8 and it's a completely different vehicle.

I have a 2008 VR6. I tow with it. I has no problem if you give it hell to pass something. Not quite as effortless as the V8. But it does well. My wife mostly drives it anyways. So she doesn't need all the extra power and never use it. My car has the leather package so I didn't loose much. I'd love to have a V8, but the car works fine and the maintenance is less with the v6 with not having to deal with a timing belt. Also, I wouldn't compare the v6 in the Cherokee to the vr6 motor. The vr6 motor makes excellent usable power that many other engines can't match in its day. 210hp in the Cherokees vs 280hp in the touareg. The v8 will only show it's strength on the on-ramp. Otherwise the V6 is more then capable for 99% of drivers.

The V8 FSI in the T2 has no timing belt.

You can't compare V6 and V8 engines! In anything.

I have an 09 V6 and have zero complaints. Plenty of get up and go when in a tight spot - on ramps included. However, will never tow with it, so that may be the difference maker. I see plenty of T2 v8's on-line though - not exactly the white whale. Good luck.

I've owned a V6 and a V8..no difference in running costs between them at all...if you're going to burn up the same amount of fuel you may as well have 350HP vs 280HP.

its a heavy vehicle, the V6 works hard to move it around..the v8 doesn't. 18-20 is really optimistic for a 1st gen touareg, more like 15-17mpg.

Starting in 2007, the V6 was increased from a 3.2 to a 3.6 litre. Can't speak for the first V6 motors, but my 3.6L gets 18mpg in town and 21 on the highway. I had a Jeep Grand Cherokee before--it had a 4.7 V8 that got 14mpg in town and 17 on the highway. The Jeep's 4.7 V8 horsepower was the same (about 270HP) as the Treg's 3.6L VR6.

In another thread, someone mentioned that the diesel motors do not lose horsepower at mountain elevations (over 4,000 ft above sea level). So if I lived in Colorado, I would think even a V8 would be less effective than the diesel 6 cylinder.

I tow a 3,500# boat/trailer with the 3.6L, but leave it in sport mode (hangs in gear 5 of 6). It gets about 12mpg with 90% highway driving on gently rolling (between 700 and 1,200 feet above sea level) roads when pulling that package at 60mph, but the boat is a cuddy cabin with a huge windshield that creates lots of resistance.

21mpg sounds really optimistic when most T2 TDIs are getting around 21-22mpg.

fuelly shows gas v6's getting 15-17mpg, the same generation diesels are getting 21-22mpg;

I was searching through the older Classifieds and came across this

all I can say is OH........MY...........GOD!

That is a perfect car for what I want, lol I just am 6 months late. I'll keep my eyes on this forum daily and Auto trader to see if another one comes up.

Does anyone know of any reliable service that will locate a vehicle similar to this at auction and buy it for me? I've reached out to a couple independent dealers that sell high end lease returns and such, but they haven't given me much confidence that they can find one, nor that they are really even going to look. They would rather try to sell me a used ML350 or some trash that's already in their inventory.

On my 3.2 gasser I get 22mpg out of the larger UK gallon at 77mph true on cruise control but 18 mpg across the board.

Given that 12 US galls = 10 UK that would be 18 mpUSg at 77 mph and 15 mpUSg overall using premium Shell fuel which, I think, equates to your 93.

Here goes a link to the mpg specs for the new Touareg with the V-6:

Compare Side-by-Side

and here goes a link for the 2007 models:

Fuel Economy of 2007 Volkswagen Touareg

So my observed mileage is in between the 2014 and 2007 chart--but that 2007 chart says the 2007 V10 gets 20mpg on the highway: anybody got the figures for a 2007 V10? (I question the veracity of that chart.)

I only put on about 8,000 miles per year, so the added expense of a TDI is not worth it for me, unless I move into the mountains somewhere.

Fuelly can KMA.
