Bump for an old but super useful post.

Question: is the wire harness at #4 the one that goes from the control module to the 7 pin connector?

I recently had the VW hitch installed on my 2010 v6 TDI and from the attached information on the receipt it appears the electronic control unit is included with part # 7L0092105UA.

The following info was included as an attachment to the receipt:

I took my 2011 TDI Lux to my dealer to have the electrical towing outlet mounted to the hitch last week. They had it for 3 days and couldn't get it to function properly. They said it worked for a few minutes then tested dead or not functioning. I got the Treg back and the driver side window one touch feature didn't work anymore. So it's back to the dealer 5/27/13 to try again.

I'm the current record holder for taking the my Treg to the dealer multiple times for service. Every month for 6 months in a row with a 2-5 day stay. I've had the car 6 months. Lemon is sour to taste.

On the surface, your dealership sounds incompetent in working on Touaregs, or has not been properly trained, or is lacking diagnostic skills. I'd be more inclined to go the distance and take it to a different VW dealership.

No, I do not work for Volkswagen, but there are dealership usually in big cities that know how to work on Touaregs, they see quite a few of them and get proficient with them, and there are small town VW dealerships that have technicians that cringe every time a Touareg comes in for non routine maintenance, or electrical issues. Your dealership sounds like the latter, they do more damage than repair, every time they try to fix your car. This is also a really good example of why you buy a Touareg with a hitch factory installed, instead of trying to do it yourself. It is probably something as simple as screwing up the coding when doing your hitch and fiddling around with the long coding.

This may very well be too complex a vehicle for you to own and operate, combined with an incompetent local technician or two that is doing more damage than good. Touaregs, and TDI's in general, are quirky, period... few technicians know how to work on them unless the cars sells in volume in local larger markets, where they get enough coming back to get competent working on known issues. Sounds like you don't live in one of those markets, or your technician is a hacker and doesn't verify his work.

Worst case, you may need to cut your losses short and move on from your problem child.

2004 Treg V6 trailer harness WITH 7 wire AND brake controller

Hello - been here coupla times. Am an idiot, but know when to ask questions. This may be lengthy - SORRY. My 2004 V6 Treg does NOT have factory tow hitch. (I presume, also, there is NO 7-wire harness running back to rear.) I want to: 1. install a hitch; 2. install wiring; 3. install electric brake controller. I see on internet a Curt 13220 Class III receiver. (I believe I can order & install that.) Now, there are 4-wire Flat connector kits ALSO available (Tow Ready 118509 ) that connect to tail lite wiring; have a power line running to battery (probably so as not to drain current on rear lights); and a 'converter' module. Do I want/need that 4-wire kit? If not, where do I find a 7-wire aftermarket harness? (have searched, but unsuccessful, so far). Once I get 7-wire, then I can either go to my local 'trailer supplies dealer' and have HIM install electric brake controller (which is a SEPARATE item) to wiring and under dash; OR, can I install THAT myself? (I prefer to install the Curt myself; & have trailer guy install wiring/electric brake controller, as he has for several Chevy Suburbans previously -- however, they ALL had factory 'trailering package'. I was STUPID not to have ordered 'factory trailer pkg' on this Treg; however, I didn't, at the time, realize how strong it was/is !! ) SORRY about length of this post !! PLEASE HELP ! Thanks.

Hi. Your best option is to use the Volkswagen tow kit. It might be more expensive than any curtis/tow ready solution but it is really easy to install and you benefit from the integration of the tow kit with the vehicle's electronics. I installed the factory tow package myself on my 2004 V10 and I would never recommend anything else but the OEM hitch and electronics.

I also installed a tekonsha P3 and I am very satisfied with the results.

You can buy it through your dealer or online through typical sites such as ecstuning.com.

Okay, I am sorry but I am bumping this old thread up. I have a hitch on my T1 but no wiring yet. I want to cheap out but then again I don't.

I'm looking for anyone who has avoided the costly OEM wiring and just run a regular cheapo harness like many of my past vehicles used (MK4, Passat etc) and if you ran into any issues. I don't need trailer brake control at this time I just need lights for my little utility trailer and maybe a boat trailer if I buy one this summer.

ECS has the harness listed for around 600$ and in my mind that is crazy seeing as it is just a couple plugs and some wiring. Any input would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance

Follow your own advice - don't!!!

In the long run it will be cheaper easier and quicker all round to go OEM

You're probably right pjod, but since it is a T1 I am reading that I can use a 30$ wiring harness instead of spending 500$

I won't ever get that $ back out of the vehicle in the end and I don't plan on having it forever so function over form... anyone have personal advice using a cheap alternative?

I am calling my buddy at the stealership today and seeing what he can do for me just in case they are cheaper now. Wish me luck

I think the original wiring harness is less than $300, not $600.

It is not only a couple of plugs, but also a trailer control module. There are some rumors that it changes the transmission shifts points, but I don't know if it is true. It may also require a reflashing of ECU/other electric parts.

I also do not plan to tow anything heavier than 3000-3500 lbs chose this kit: Wiring by Curt for 2013 Touareg - C56201KIT

I just purchased a 2005 V8, the factory tow bar was already installed. there was a cover plate (4 screws) over the wiring harness plug. I purchased an adapter and plugged it in, checked the output with a multi meter and everything seems good.

Question: Do i have the brake module? (not referring to a brake controller that mounts under the dash)
Is there additional wiring needed to add a prodigy controller?

I will be towing a car hauler and track car... Probably around 5500lbs

If the wiring is functional then you do have the control module. The wiring harness that ends at the receiver is connected to the module itself. There is also wiring from the controller to a connector under the dash on the driver side.

All you need is to buy the other half of the connector from the dealer, buy a relay and figure out the pins. It is very well documented I'm sure you can find it easily. I had this exact setup on my 2004 V10.

Try to hook up a trailer. You should see an extra light in your instrument cluster when you hit the turn signals. Also you will notice the transmission shifting higher in the RPMs.

Early vs. late towing module and wiring??

Why does the new (circa 2010) towing module kit come with the wiring AND module for about the same price as the wiring and module sell separately from the old (2004) kit.

Wondering if the new kit will work on older cars. It looks the same.

Sorry to bump this way old thread, but I'm wondering if anyone can recommend a local shop in So CA that can install the etrailer wiring harness. My treg didn't have a tow kit installed, so I installed the curt hitch (super easy, fits beautifully) but I know installing the wiring harness is beyond me. I've checked with two local repair shops and both of them have said no way in hell will we touch that job..

In watching the video though, it doesn't look *that* hard, so there has to be *somebody* who will install the darn thing. I'm just not that mechanical, and crawling around under my vehicle isn't something I'm comfortable with.
Does anyone have any experience with a So Cal shop that would do it?

I also called etrailer, and they couldn't recommend anyone, nor could my stealership, so I'm at a loss.

thanks!
