Coming from a v8 rover to my v6 touareg, I am yet to test the vw off road but am worried about its ability to perform. Have any of you guys gone off roading in a v6 by any chance? if so, how was it?

They do just fine offroad and I am not talking just a dirt road. I have done some crawling with mine as well as deep stream crossings. There used to be a group of us that got together in Ouray, CO and did trail rides there. We would get all sorts of looks from the Jeep crowd, but it was a good thing since the rides gave me a whole new respect for the Touareg and it's abilities. If you don't have air suspension you will have to be mindful of your clearance and choose your lines accordingly. You don't have much after market available for the Treg, so no real commercial lift kits available for it. There are some members here working on somethings, but I don't know if they are ready to sell anything. It will not articulate like the Rover due to the indy suspension, but it does just fine with wheels in the air and gets through it just fine. Do a search for the Rally in Ouray and then read the threads there. Welcome to the Forum and enjoy your stay!! :)

Thats great news! I live in FL so crawling wont come into play too often down here; Im more worried about rivers and such. Ill be sure to try it out soon and let you guys know how it went :) The only thing is im on the 19's and im working on downgrading to 17's so I can get some a/t tires on it.

Watch your fording depths.

My 05 v6 is amazing Offroad. In sport mode, it does just as well as anything else. We went to rausch creek offroad park in PA last weekend and did the green trails with no trouble at all and made it through the pink (rated blue) topless for tatas trail with no damage other than the plastic skid plate. I'm running 255/75R17 (32x10R17) BFG mud terrains, and we went through water that came to the bottom of the headlights multiple times like it wasn't even there. Biggest thing was making sure I kept it in sport mode for the throttle response and low range with center lock over the rocks.

And the best part, as Yeti said, were the looks from the jeepers in our group and throughout the park. Everyone was talking trash when we got there, but were running to comment on how badass the treg was when we made it out

At that depth be extremely cautious and what ever you do DON'T STOP, as you Air Intake is only a couple of inches above that level, right behind the head lamp. Any amount of back wash on coming to a halt and you will drown the engine.....Tread with care!

Stuart...

Those are over 32 5/8" in diameter, most people here get rubbing at an inch smaller... How are you managing?

Overall diameter is 32.1". Have zero rub with factory wheels. They're pretty awesome tires. I aired down to 18 psi last time we went to rausch creek, and I think I will do the same Sunday when we go.

As for the intake, since last month I have removed the factory air box in place of a higher intake. There was solid mud about 1/3 up the factory filter, so another 6 inches and that would have been it. In the process of finding a long section of 3" aluminum pipe to fab a snorkel from.

will be disconnecting the front and rear away bars Sunday for more articulation. Hopefully I can fab up brackets for an actual sway bar disconnect by next month, along with either 2.5 or 5" lift brackets. Going to try to weld up some lift brackets in the morning, or worse case, ye old rubber spring spacer for an extra 1 1/2" center ground clearance.

Width has a lot to do with it too. I'm running a 255/75R17, which is factory width, just 3" taller.
That's 32.1 inches nominal OD

The reason I use "nominal" is that although the hole in the centre of the tire has to be spot on for obvious reasons, the overall diameter of any size of tire can vary by up to half an inch which may be the reason why your tyres are fitting the wheel arches okay and/or the fact that you have next to no tolerance left!

I'm running big 275/65x18 weighing in at 32.32"

They rub fairly well on the fronts , (at about 3/4 lockish), I have 1" width spacers on the front which doesn't help the situation very much. The lift helps but not much. The rear of the inner arches are shredded, I reshaped the front edge with a heat gun and some persuasion, but the rear end has nowhere to go as there's a seam rite behind the inners . I think it will be better with the additional lift I'm planning.
But all said its not a big deal.
