hello folks, having some problems with my 2005 v6 . When i try to start it for the first time on any given day it takes a while to fire up-it turns over fine but just doesn,t fire up.once started it starts first time on subsequent start ups during the day. In conjunction with this is a definite loss of performance-there is a loss of power and the engine sounds rough and a bit revvy-think i will have to go to a registered dealership but any ideas what may be causing the problem.
its on about 94,000 miles just now with a solid logbook history
Steve:cry:

My guess Spark plugs? Wait until someone else replies you, noobytoogy has same engine..

I assume it is a 3.2 petrol V6 you have?

It could be a coolant temperature sensor [I think there are two] not allowing the car to fuel sufficiently. I had to have a new one a while back. But the engine management light came on and you don't appear to have that.

I'd get it on VAGcom/VCDS and see if any faults come up.

You can always go to an independent VW specialist if they have VCDS/VAGcom - check first.

Getting a read out will be your starting point.

As you are in the UK, switch to just using Shell V-Power 98 octane [that's 94 in the US] - mine is SWEET on that. Run your existing fuel as low as you can before filling up and trying 3 or 4 tankfuls. Yes it costs more I know, but you pay to play!

Indeed.

Could be duff injectors too.

If they break they can wreck the engine and turbo - just happened to someone on www.mytreg.com and they're looking at the thick end of GBÂŁ12,000/US$20,000 tho' VW UK may possibly chip in with a discount of up to 30%.

This car should not be driven in my view.

Get it into the dealer ASAP

thanks guys-it could well be coincidental that the starting problem and the loss of performance have developed at the same time.I intend to get it to a dealer asap -providing i make it -its 30 miles away!!

That should be ok.

When I said don't drive it, I was more concerned you might be wanting to tow a caravan 300 miles each way to Cornwall this weekend!

LOL No probs mate-know what you mean tho-a little family use this weekend then to a dealer next week.
Funny thing is my wife diesn,t think theres any difference in performance and my local garage(trustworthy, straight but a bit backstreet) had a quick check and drive and thought it felt ok but a little underpowered-of course they did not drive it before i felt there was a difference.
Anyway I,m shi**ing myself now in case the injectors are the problem and the engine blows up!!!!
thanks for your help

Could be "DUFF" injectors too.

Don't you just love a Company who makes fuel injectors and BEER! ( sorry for the Simpsons Humor and the minor edit )

Don't recall one!

If you've got a decent dealer, they'll check for you.

Mine always checks recalls and got me new coil packs for free.

Not sure about the start... But i had a loss in power when i bought the car and it seemed to be the EGR or gas recirculation valve that caused that. A month later, changed the throttle controller. Both had an effect on power AND consumption. The power improved slightly, but the consumption improved big time!

Have you noticed anything about consumption?

You have the 3L V6 TDi right? If yes, you have the same power plant as my own.

I hope this comes helpful...

took the car to local VW main dealership and explained the problems.
they carried out a full diagnostic check and the cars computer has only one fault recorded which was a sporadic problem with the ignition switch. That would explain the problems starting first thing but there is no indication of anything else wrong.
does a diagnostic check identify problems with injectors, fuel supply etc? -i am not convinced by the garage stating that everything is fine according to their diagnostic check.
my dad, worked on diesel engines for years thinks that the sluggish performance(noticed only by me it seems) may be possibly connected to gunked up fuel filters(told the garage to check them and change if required)

Hi guys and Steve61.

Im new to all this kind of stuff so I apologise if my use of words and descriptions are a bit s***!

Anyway I have been looking thru this post and I also have the 3.0L V6 engine (2006 altitude model) and I seem to be having the exact same issues as yourself!

Same problems on the first start up in the morning and continual loss of power while driving and also misfiring if I put the foot to the floor.

I had it connected to the computer and it has recorded something about not firing correctly on cylinders 1,2,3 & 5

I was advised I needed glow plugs and some kind of temp sensor to help with start up issues but may not help the loss of power issues and that may need to be investigated further??

My Treg has only done 55k miles but im not sure if the glow plugs etc have ever been changed before.

Any extra info would be greatly appreciated as Im not really clued up with these cars. I only bought the car for my misses a couple month back because she needed more space for our son.

Cheers
David.

If you haven't done so already, try posting your problem on the UK site:

www.mytreg.com

Put the concise nature of your problem in the thread heading [not just Help! as some folk do!]

You did the right thing getting the fault codes scanned, preferably ALWAYS with VAGcom / VCDS [VW specific fault finders], but people need the actual codes that came up to help you.

An update, following a further check it was discovered that the securing clips for the hose linking the intercooler and the inlet manifold was broken and the hose needed replaced as well. The technician thought it was possible that due to the seal on the hose being damaged there may be fuel rollback when first starting causing starting problems as well as ferformance issues.
The car now runs lovely but there is still the problem with starting exactly as before-am I to assume this will be down to the faulty starting switch identified in the original diagnostic check? and that there was two seperate unrelated faults which became evident at the same time?
Could it still be glowplugs as earlier suggested or would that have shown up during the diagnostic check and would there not be a sensor warning light if the glowplugs were dodgy.
Am I ignoring the obvious with regard to the starter switch?
Again thanks for advice-nice to get informed guidance
