My 06 got a shake after changing the OE 18's to 20's. I did the mounting and balancing myself as I do it all the time for race cars. I am sure the balance is spot on. I suspect this has to do with the Toe adjustment as we see it on the race cars with wide tires. I'm going to check it this weekend and report back. On the race cars if you run close to 0Deg them they tend to do this and we have to make it slight Neg or Pos depending on the set-up to create a slight "drag" if you can call it that.
Interesting thought! I'd like to hear back if you check the align and find any results either way. It makes some sense though for sure....wonder what specs are for toe up front...a little toe out up front works for me, all my cars are set that way anyhow for turn in.

I've had two 04 Touaregs. Steering wheel vibrations on both. Balanced tires numerous times and now I have Q7 with similar issues.
Recently I installed H&R spacers and noticed the bolts are a different design.
"Interesting" I thought....
So after I installed the bolts I drive away and BIngo! No Shaking!
The OEM bolts come with a crush/wobble washer. I believe this is the issue. So if you have shaking one day and not the other. Try this.
Hope this helps guys.

how to figure out what's the problem

I have a 2012 TDI 20k miles and no shake problem with either OEM tires or my snows.
If there are two forum members in the same area, one with and one without shake, it seems to me that they could us all a great service by swapping wheels (and tires) and going for a quick highway drive.

If the shake moves with the wheels, then this problem is caused by some wheel or tire issues. If the shake stays on the same vehicle, then it's not the tires.

I'm intrigued by the racer's toe-in comments, but I also wonder if the problem might be one of out of round or otherwise distorted wheels. If so, not amount of tire balancing would help.

My shake came after dealer re-aligned my car, before that it was silky smooth. I took it back and they said that they found right front wheel out of balance, slapped 15 grams of weight on, shake still present. I did some digging on Porsche's forums and it looks like some members were successful by torquing their wheels to 118lb while wheels are in the air. So far two main suspects are; alignment and lug nuts. Perhaps giving it a little more torque secures floating washers better? Will try it as soon as I get my new torque wrench.

Not sure what the torque specs on the T3 are, but on the T1/T2 it is 120lb. Should only be done up in the air as the 3 ton Touareg won't allow much wheel movement if its on the ground.

Great information. Will ask Santa for some bolts and add them to the maintenance schedule.

I have 18" winters and 20" summers and no shake at 200, whoops I mean 100 speed limit.

120nm ~90# is the rating for the smaller VWs, not the heavy Treg... I've always torqued the Treg to 120..looks like latest spec is 132... Some references:

According to VW dealer (I called) it is 120nm. Regardless, I'll try torquing to 118/120lb as soon as I get my torque wrench

My 2012 CDN spec owners manual specifies 133 ftlb torque, of course that is with the factory free floating spherical washer lug bolts.
Just an interesting point, I have never had any shake whatsoever, however, when I got the treg last winter, I almost immediately put winter rims ( used stock 17" canyons) and new nokian WRG2s on it. Part of the Kaltire sale was a mandatory alignment, and guess what, the treg was quite a bit off! Had it corrected on their nice new machine, and the manager at Kaltire said they have a lot of new vehicles showing up not in factory alignment specs, including his new Jeep, with only 12 km on it! The alignment was $100, to qualify me for $200 off on the tires and I feel it was money very well spent!

Just a quick update

I just picked up my 2013 replacement Touareg since vw bought my 2012 back due to excessive shake. . Drives super super smooth smooth smooth up to 90 mph fastest i drove its sitting on Pireli Verdes. But this one shakes when braking down. The stealer said it will go away after 300 miles of break-in period the car has 11 miles so far. Will update as i put on few more miles on it.

Great to hear that NK, hope the shake will really go after 300 miles.. And posts some pics :)
