Just traded in a 2010 Chrysler 300 for this 04 Touareg. Needed an SUV for work. Anyway, V8, Air-Suspension, w/ nav.45,000 miles. I like the truck but after reading about it on this site i think i will soon hate it. It seems like a nightmare to own this truck. it cost a fortune to own! Im not convinced the cost is worth the ownership of this truck.

For Sale:
04 Touareg
Air Suspension

The classic example of some one buying a 50k luxury car that is 9 years old and not thinking about the fact that luxury cars are also expensive to fix, no matter how old the vehicle is. There is a reason that these vehicles depreciate quickly.

Maybe more of a leaping before you look situation. These things can be costly but need not be much more expensive (in most cases) than other vehicles. However, you have to use your head and hands to keep it that way.

There's also a lot of scare that reading a site like this can put into a person. We do love these machines, but we also complain a fair bit, too.

I would guess that at the vehicle's age, most of the severe gremlins are out and have been dealt with. And at those miles, it has plenty of life left. If it were me, that vehicle would not scare me a bit.

However, the OP should have the timing belt checked/changed (along with the rest of that service) depending on what's known of the vehicles service history. Probably also a good idea to take a peek at the drive shaft.

There's a whole lot more to love than hate about your Treg.

If you have a proper budget or an affordable mechanic.
That is how I did it After 160k miles the costs became greater than the vehicle was worth and it was bye bye Touareg, other wise it would have still been in my posession.

Luxury? really cause i missed it. I had an 04 civic with better options.

The Touareg is annoying. A setbelt chime that chimes even when the car is in park. VW dealer said cause its in motion. In motion in park where did he get his degree? Mine has a nav installed, useless still use my gamin. Radio sounds like ****. It screams at me with super highs and mid with no bass. Eq does nothing. Pain in the ass to upgrade the nav unit. Gotta rewire amps and preamps and all that BS. Battery under the seat? Really, good designing there!
And i cant install and auto start? i MUST press break to start the thing. Another great design there. HID that i can only see 10' in front of me. Air suspension seems pointless and expensive to fix. My 300 had a better ride.
But i can get over big rocks, yeahhhhhhhhh!
I been a VW owner for a week, and it will be my last one. What a POS! Never again.

-'04 Civic w/ better options, not a chance, remember it's a Civic
-Agreed chime is annoying, but it can be turned off
-Most dealers I know don't have degrees, but he was smart enough to get you to buy something you didn't want
-Agreed Nav is archaic, it's an '04
-Radio is great, clarity and bass are far better that most factory systems, especially for an '04
-With terminal posts under the hood, the inconvenience of the battery being under the seat should come in to play no sooner than every four years or so to replace it
-I start mine from the passenger side daily, brake is not necessary to start
-Have you tried replacing or adjusting the HIDs yet?
-Yes A/S is expensive to fix, it's an adjust on the fly suspension. Where else are you going to find that? It is surely not pointless; from basic ride adjustment to offroading and towing
-Don't forget, that "POS" can tow both your 300 and your Civic at the same time

I don't normally acknowledge such posts, but this is a special case. I sense a lot of teen angst trolling around here. My suggestion is to go back to a car or maybe try a wagon. The Touareg is doesn't appear to be for you. It has its drawbacks like anything else, but most cannot come close to its versatility/luxury combination which outweigh by far. If you have something legitimate to post or ask, then CT is the right place, where a group of people appreciate what they have. Otherwise...what's the point?

-when comparing to the civic, that was really just a point to say there where alot of technology around in 04' th VW could have used
-yes im sure he does have a degree but gotta admit, sound pretty stupid so i was just making fun of him
-yes the NAv is very sad, VW could have supply free cd updates, instead they charge 250. Thats just greedy!
-sound system ill agree to disagree, but it defiantly needs help!
-complained about the battery cause i needed to remove the seat to upgrade the radio. And after you have to remove the seat, everyone would complain.
-mine requires me to press the brake to start, how do you turn that off?
-no i have not replaced the HID, i hope when i have to replace them they function much better.
-and yes i get that it has great off road capability, just more then i needed. My 300 did seem to have a smoother ride. The air suspension feels very bouncy to me, even on sport mode. But i understand its function and yes impressive which equals expensive.

Some positives:
-Its pretty fast, got mine over 125, my first SUV, getting used to the handling and ride height. Will push it soon!
-sounds good when you give it some gas!
-heated seats are the hottest i ever felt!

Your right the Treg really isnt it for me so maybe im not being fair. I just needed it for work. i have always been a car guy.

Let me guess. 100% financed and no reserves in the bank. WIth a touareg on the drive way that is a recipe for disaster.

I have the same car. Bought it in May on whim.

Nav is embarrassing - get a get a get a Garmin
Audio is the best factory sound system I've heard. The louder the better. I usually always gut audio systems and go high end aftermarket. No real need here
The suspension is, IMO, great. I've owned many sports cars over the years and this one is more fun to drive than any of them
You don't have to step on the brake to start, just shift. That's how it should be
Replacing the battery is a joke! I agree with you on this one. Then you have to clear about three pages of fault codes

I think the bottom line is, as others have said, it's just not the right car for you. If I didn't already have one, I'd be interested in purchasing yours because it has alot less miles.

Drive it for awile. They grow on you QUICK!

Dave

If in fact the brake is required for engine turnover for Yeagz, but not for the rest of us, then changing it should be possible

Dont know about gas engines but i am copmletely satisfied with mine TDI, except a few electronic anoying thinga my t-reg is great..

If you are taking the seat out to access the battery, you are doing it wrong.

The seat simply tilts backwards after removing the plastic trims on the rear of the seat runners, removing two plastic plates in the floor at the front of the seat and undoing the two floor studs revealed after removing those plates.

It's not ideal but it's nowhere near as hard as some people try to make out.

Lots of vitriol here. Hard to see some of this and think you actually tested it out. If all this is to your distaste, then why did you buy it? Plenty of other SUV's out there.

If you have no Bass then there is something wrong with your system. Mine can produce unpleasant amounts of bass if I want it to. How did it sound when you were evaluating the vehicle for purchase?

The HID's are great - yours must be worn.

Air susp. Really great for towing - but one of the nice things about it is you can set it to sport for handling and to comfort for a nice ride. If it doesn't ride better than a Chrysler 300 in comfort mode, you can probably trace it back to the tires that are on it.

Agree with others on pressing the brake to start. That's definitely not standard on a 2004.

Sorry you are do dissatisfied. If I didn't already have one, I'd be glad to relieve you of it.

I remember reading a thread here where an owner of an 04 had a software update at the dealer and when he left, it required the brake to be applied to start the vehicle.

I dont think you can change it with vagcom. It was a software update from the dealer that supposedly fixed some issues and added the brake to start option. I have never seen someone on here with a remote start.

Auto start has been talked about many times, but no one has done it or at least reported back as having gotten it to work. As said above, no way around the press brake to start. Early ones did not have it and it definitely was a software update of some sort that gave them the option. VCDS will not help you with that.
Pressing the brake pedal to start I believe is the main reason auto start won't work along with the fact the chip in the FOB needs to be in the car and detected for it to start. I believe that is the biggest reason it was never made to work, but I am not positive on that.
Replace your headlights, they are probably old and worn. If you have Xenons you can actually do a VAG mod to have the inner high beams come on with the outer for the Six Light Salute. Do some reading here and you can find a lot of answers to concerns and questions you may have with your vehical.

i figured it was the brake to start that was stopping me from the auto start. im sure soon illl have to replace the lights. i wont till they completely stop working on me, since there expensive. And i have been doing some reading on VAG-COM. Unfortunately i dont have one, and i doubt the dealer will turn off the annoying seat belt chime!
