PS to post #21 link, make sure you digest this comment:

"Let’s pause for a moment and ask how is it that VW – the world’s No. 2 auto maker by sales – could so misread such an important market for so long. Stubbornness? Arrogance? A rigid adherence to accounting principles? Probably all three and perhaps more".

+1 from me, I discovered the lack of 4XMotion & Air ride in another thread and was gob-smacked, USA is the single biggest market with a solid and dependable after sales support for air ride (via Arnotts). Both these exclusions are quite off-road oriented, I wonder if it's due to legal reason like no 'inclinometer' in the 7L.
I don't know about legal reasons, but others have surmised it is because most US drivers rarely take their Touaregs off road, so the demand is not there. My opinion is that if you offer it, We will buy it. How many people who live in suburbia even need an SUV? Yet they buy them. That has driven the market for years. If VW offered it, people would pay for it, some becuase they will use it, and others because they can and it makes it different.

Society buys alot of things they don't need, so give us the choice VW.

Besides, if they offered it here, someone who can afford it can buy one and then I can pick it up used in about 5 years when I retire my 05. :D

TReg sales are up since the new model ('11 and '12's) have been released..."watered" down vs. RoW as they are.

As many note here, 90%+ of us Yanks don't go off paved roads in the 3-6 yrs of owndership. Probably 1/2 that do go on grash, lightly graded dirt/gravel.

Those who do and don't care for massive/costly repair bills...buy Jeeps or the like.

Doesn't mean we don't appreciate a solid engine, handling, etc. for the highways/cruises where we can toss our 2.5 kids in the back and drive 1700 miles in comfort and style :)

If you're a VW fan, its really either Tiquan or TReg. If you can affortd the TReg...it's TReg (or Q5).

The US market that VW specifically targets for the TReg is a de-contented version of the Euro-, Asia- and Australia-marketed TReg, which helps VW keep the US pricing generally in the US$45K to US$55K range. That price range helps VW compete against BMW X5, Audi Q7, Porsche Cayenne, Landrover in the United States. Most Americans are buying these SUVs -- including the TReg -- not to tow or go off-road, but to take kids to school, commute to work, go to the movies, etc. The moment VW decides -- and it won't -- to put out a higher-performance engine (V-8 ) or off-road enhancements (Air Susp.) in the United States which most of us Americans that are not on this forum generally don't care about, it risks turning the TReg into a US$60K to US$65K car. That, then, is asking an image-conscious U.S. consumer to buy a VW SUV at the pricing of an X5 or Q7. Under those circumstances, BMW and Audi will win almost every time. So for the U.S. market, I think VW has priced it correctly. (Although many of us here on the forum and in the U.S. would gladly pay extra for an optioned TReg because it is a beast of a car.)

I understand the rationale of this, but I don't understand why VWoA wouldn't offer air-ride, 4XMotion and area view as 'Options'. They're more than willing to introduce new models, which has a big impact on support infrastructure, ie more warehouse space to store spares, more training for tech support, more complicated ordering system, etc....IMHO, there is more to it than just VWoA wanting to keep prices down, and as you have said, there are people willing to pay for it if it was available. If I was a paranoid schizo person I'd think they're sending Arnotts a message for parking their bicycle on VW's front lawn.

Interesting conversation...The 2013 Cayenne TDI will have air suspension here. Now we are getting farther up scale with an off road option. It seems to me the T-Reg is hitting the upper limits on price(over priced) now so the good stuff goes up market by default.

I'm seriously considering going to Porsche for the above reason, but also for the colours and theoretically better service.

I've never understood why the T-Reg is so expensive.

Air suspension would be nice.
But the Cayenne is made in the same factory as the Touareg in Slovakia except they finish it in Germany so they can say "made" in Germany.
Also like "the better service" part. Took me a while to find a good dealer, but I think we found them. So far we are happy Treggers!

This is exactly what VW does in Canada! The TDI Exec lists at over $63k..

TDI makes sense as the only powerplant. I'm not a fan of the 150 with 400Nm and being a V6. Not the engine itself, as it is a good engine - just low torque output by todays standard of current Jap(anese) players. The 150 is more on the money with the 2013 goodies update and I think it'll sell well. 4Xmotion and 20" alloys - not sure what that's about. No sense looking for a bit of off-road, then letting the package down with low profile tyres. Overall, I think VW have got a good set of options as a 5-seater and it's fair value.

From my personal perspective, if VW ever had any environmental credential the 150 TDI basically took it away again. Why bring a product to the market that offers less power but same fuel consumption?

This is where I think MB, BMW, Audi, Lexus is more credible in terms of environmental credibility by offering a choice of power or economy.

My new 150 TDI gets over 16% better fuel economy than my old R5 (R5 8.36 km/l v 150TDI 9.72 km/l), I am not complaining!

I thought I'd throw this in as it offers some perspective on value:

Hyundai Santa Fe

The Santa Fe is bigger than a Tig, but smaller than a Treg. The 2.2 TD is also a better set of numbers over the Treg 150. I'm good on Hyundai getting their line-up right on quality, specs and price. It keeps the pencils sharp when show room floor shopping. Also, check out the poll results at the bottom of the article.

Have settled on this one. Due off the boat late October.
