Visual demonstration of defective RNS-850 HD Radio tuner

OK, here's a much better attempt at a video demonstrating the problem using an oscilloscope:

While I'm at this I want to thank everyone for being patient with me in my frequent recurring posts about this. I just want VW to acknowledge this problem, whether they can't fix it for practical reasons, or even if they just won't fix it because they don't CARE.

While the issue itself concerns me not much, I'd have to admit that the evidence which you were able to video-document leaves no room for arguing. I'd be curious to hear how the VW will react if you'd decide to present this clip to their attention. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks. The new video will be brought to VWoA's attention. :). I'll also be checking on the 2013 Touaregs when one hits the local dealer.

I wonder how excited they will actually get about this-- They are still putting this RNS850 into new models (curious as you are about the situation in MY2013 as a change in this function could be used as evidence/admission of a defect). Do you think they will replace RNS850 with the Nvidia 3 processor MMIs that are scheduled to be introduced in other VW cars next year?

No idea. We do know that, as an example, the RNS-510 has gone through numerous functional revisions and updates, while retaining the same model designation. The 2013 Treg could have an updated RNS-850, or it could be the same exact one used in previous years.

If the RNS-850 in a 2013 Treg works, I am going to insist, rather strongly, that my 850 be replaced with the newer version that actually works.

Meanwhile I have opened a new ticket with VW Customer CARE, waiting for their response.

I can now report that there is in fact a fix for this issue. I suspect I may have the only Touareg in the wild in North America with HD Radio that works correctly. Anyone interested PM me and I'll share what I can.

Software update? When will it be available?

Lots of PMs, too many to respond to individually. So here goes...

I was reluctant to blab about the solution because I got the problem fixed through "goodwill" on VWoA's part. But I guess I'll blab anyway. ;)

You need a new Module 56, and new SVM coding. The SVM part can only be done by a dealer; VAGCOM can't do it. Actually you can skip the SVM part and the system including HD Radio will work, but the audio EQ (equalization) will be crazy-out-of-whack, and the new module will throw several "03175 invalid data set" faults.

Here's the data for the new working module, some data obscured.

If you pursue this, keep in mind the dealers and even VW Customer CARE may not know about the fix for quite a while. Maybe months.

Hope this info helps someone...

Thank you for your efforts. Is the update only to address the HD radio issues or are there other software enhancements such as showing album artwork from iOS devices?

I'm not aware of it fixing any other issues. Was the album artwork only missing from iOS devices? I know if I plug in an SD card containing music from my iTunes library, the album art is displayed on the 850 screen.

Yes, artwork shows with SD cards, just not from any iOS device. It's simply a matter of coding. I'm sure VW is aware. Not a big deal. There's even a placeholder in the upper left for a Contact's picture ID when a phone call is active, though that implementation is TBD and not a big deal, either.

Glad you got the fix. You definitely earned it. Kudos.

"Good will".... This is just TSB lingo as a defunct HD radio is not a safety issue and doesn’t require a recall campaign.

Anyway this is good news as this means they admit that there is a defect because they have a fix.

This is going to be very expensive for VW... Based on your info, 4G0 035 080 D is the radio/amp in the rear cargo area.

It is a part that outside of the dealership would cost around $1300.

Tac on about two hours for labor.

I don't think he meant you needed the module itself. Probably just meant coding that module which would already be present in the system. Perhaps he can clarify.
