Completed trip - towing experience

Curious about that 'L' hitch adapter in Post #9 ... looks OK if you wish to attach a bike rack or a spare wheel carrier, but surely (with that weld) it would not be rated sufficiently for towing?

thanks for that, the engineer that i'm speaking with says it should not be a problem. maybe with a support attached.

if you are talking about welding, then this attached is only welded and are being used all around the country

I came across this seller on Ebay yesterday. Some of his stuff is interesting:

I had the towbar tongue knocked off on Sunday from the Navara when I was at O'Reillys, Laminton NP. The replacement he sells looks the same as Nissan with the same rating, and the 'genuine would set me back over $150. If you do not plan to tow 3500kgs, then I'd suggest his towing items are worth looking at up to 2800kgs. Point of note - a lot of off-road kit by the likes of ARB etc is imported from you-know-where.

Have met with the Engineer/ welder today,
he has no problems creating a Horizontal hitch from the Vertical ( L hitch )
he is also making me a 3' raised tow hitch which will make the base of the towball sit at about 470 from the ground.
will post some pictures and more info when i get them in about 10 days

Sounds good BC989. I would be interested in getting a converted hitch made as well. I need the base of my tow ball to be about 450 from the ground. Look forward to seeing your pictures once it is made, and then I might be after the contact ph. number for your engineer.........cheers

Hi Betsy.
I too tow a van 22 sterling and also am getting great fuel economy.
Have you tried towing in sports shift pattern it seem to tow a lot better as the shift patterns change and hold a little longer. Also when using cruise control changes down gears earlier. It is quite different but in a good way seems not too let the motor labour in anyway.
Be aware in sports shift it will not go in to top gear until 105-110 until you hit cruise control then it change to top gear.It is almost as though the car is telling you you do not need sports shift anymore until speed drops by a couple of KPH on hill and it changes back to sports mode and down a gear or 2 if needed to keep 100km. Makes life interesting for people overtaking on hills because your speed does not change.
Also i use WD system the american one Easy lift it does make a big difference for towing i have steel springs and it does level the car and bring the front down and helps to stabilise the whole thing.

You are right about it been stated in the manual.
We also have a 2012 TDI.
But I questioned the dealer/owner about that.
Because I know almost 100% sure they just translated the manual from the European market.
And in Europe there are no electric brake systems on any travel trailer or boat trailers.
We are having a WDH put on next Wednesday for our first long trip out East (Canada).
Towing it home from the dealer when we bought it was really good.But having a WDH will give us peace of mind.
I even asked him (dealer)about the "only" use 2" hitch ball.
Well any travel trailer in North America has 2 5/8" ball.
He agreed that that was also because of the translation of the manual.
I see you have a white one also! Is yours Pure White or the Campanella?

Hi Guys

I didn't use cruise at all as I prefer to have control with my feet not been lazy and perhaps not close enough to pedals in case of a drama. I didn't use the sports mode either, but may try that next time I have the van on.
WDH is controversial with the T3, but I had no issue and felt more comfortable knowing it was being used.

yes mine is Pure White. when l placed the order last October Campenella White was the colour but l found out 2 weeks after ordering that they were changing to Pure White as at mid November builds.
i am so glad i got the Pure White, also has Area View and fitted the Sports Pack that gives padel shift, black roof lining, allow pedals and brushed silver trim ( did not like the woodgrain finish at all )
we had taken months to find a Caravan that didn't have any timber inside.

Sounds like same story as mine.Ordered Campanella and got Pure White!:D Verry happy about that!
Area View?? Wow, how come you could get that and we couldn't.:confused:
Here they told us because of Japan not being able to make them.
We also have Sport package,tow hitch and Cornsilk interior.Love the brown on the dash.
No panoramic roof.We didn't want that.
What caravan did you get?
We are ready to take ours on the road in September.
Having WDH put on coming Wednesday.

Thanks Bryan for sharing what you are doing and giving the contact number for your engineer. I am definitely interested. I figure with a setup like that and raising the height of your tow ball a WDH should not be needed to tow in complete safety.

hi, a did connect the van up over the weekend and found that my vanis sitting a lot more level as the ball height needed to be around 470.
I found that the car dropped about 2" at the rear wheels and raised by less than 1" at the front, this I believe will be ok.
Hoping to get out with the van over the next weekend or two and will do some measurement and take photos on a flat level surface.
The new gooseneck gives me more clearance from the back of the car as well, (less chance of a dent or two).
