trailers might be OK, unlike the Simpson./QUOTE]
I did the Canning in 2004, I would say (I have done the Simpson crossing 4 times) it is the other way around. The extra liabity with a trailer, in both fuel and mechanical, would suggest a vehicle only trip on the Canning. The Canning is so much more remote compared to the Simpson and although I have seen the Simpson in varing degrees of wet and dry, it is fairly straight forward. Plus there is allot more traffic on the Simpson.

getting to Wiluna will be an adventure itself...about 4000kms from Sydney.
All up it'll be about it will be 11 -12000kms in that month.

Will be a good test run before we take on our transsyberian journey Gerald!...where are you?

Right here, Mate.

I would reset my leave form for 6 weeks, I'm not in a hurry on this one.

Regards

Gerald

Fair enough, I did the Canning as part of a commercial tag-a-long tour in 1989. The lead vehicles had trailers but those in their own vehicles were not permitted to. I remember the dunes in the Canning to be easier and fewer than the Simpson and I reckon that they would be the biggest problem for trailers. With regard to the trailer increasing your fuel consumption; they also make it much easier to carry a bit extra.
I carried extra fuel on my roof rack. The roof rack didn't make it home.

True : The more you bolt on the vehicle, the more that falls off.

I had the least modified vehicle (off the showroom 100 series TD Sahara), and had no problems, except for tires. BFG AT KO suffered staking to the side wall. That was on the Ann Beadell Highway on the way over.

Now that is a nice trek.

No problems at all on the Canning with tires, or anything.:D

yep, its best to leave vehicle stock - less problems that way.
with careful planning i'm sure everything can be stored inside & on the roof.

reading the latest Merc mag....they have a write up the G-Wagen's tackling the CSR....and being the only production vehicle to cross CSR!....
hopefully the Touaregs will do the same w/o any suspension failures that plagued the Mercs...

Murphy will be riding shotgun! That b@stard will show his ugly smiling mug just when you least expect it! Bugger! Maybe it can be done. You can prepare with tyres and some spares, but there's only so much you can prepare for and take onboard. Blowing an air bag out there isn't an option. Guess you've got to give it a go to find out. I'd take that Mitsu Paj along as a support vehicle. You know the old clanger on the ad that went via Vladivostok. If VGA were up to the task, they'd offer up the "worlds best support vehicle" aka Amarok and an experienced VW tech to keep you company. Will they? VW are happy to take your money but will they support their brand?

i understand your viewpoint slurper but will remain upbeat on accomplishing this adventure...thats what life is all about, get out there and enjoy the challenges...would be all too boring sitting at home otherwise...atleast for me.

I cant see why VW wont support in some manner...they have been there on such trips in the past.
thanks for the idea to have the Amarok as the support vehicle, will work on that.

Agreed, better to have a go than think about it, Anyways, you know what you're in for. I'd seriously hit up VGA AND I'd ask Roothy and 4WD Action Mag to do a story with you...........ask and you may get:

4WD Action | Australian 4WD Action

this colourful dude:

Videos | Australian 4WD Action

I'm time poor....never enough hours in a day. But I'm also a boy from the bush and grew up with fourby's.......so I'm all for give it a go.

i personally prefer overlander mag over the other 4wd publications. I do get the 4wd action once a blue moon.....but they primarily cater to bush bashing trucks or the same old nissan patrol or landcruiser.....they appear to be stuck in the past and cant seem to move on with times....anything else(modern fourby, especially Euro) to them is almost everytime inferior.....each to their own...

Pam and I have pencilled this in to catch up with the Simpson Mob. Most likely will be in our van, so will leave it near the start point and do a “big circle” to pick it up afterwards. As we are now Tojo owners we will keep the obligatory 5km distance behind, make exaggerated mention on the CB of the Tregs that just flew past while the occupants were sipping their coffee oblivious to the road corrugations; while we are tightening our kidney belts. If only we had air suspension!

GREAT to hear, Les+Pam! I like your idea of the distance between VW and Toyo! One of the Tregs can always take your van along (it's only an extra 3500kg)! Will stay in touch.

I found this site on Google. Was written (it seems) in 2005, but good general info at this early stage of planning. It's called " Hisco's CSR Resource Page". www.users.picknowl.com.au/~gazer//canning/
Cheers, W.
