I intend to do the CSR from Wiluna to Halls Creek departing Wiluna on 6 August 2012. Any other Treggers interested? As mentioned in another thread, I will pass this one on to Singh to organise if other Touareg owners are interested (maybe as a national GTG)? Cheers, Werner

nice one Werner, theres two of us now!...this is another great iconic aussie offroad tour that is on the must do list.
let the planning begin.....

Well, Singh, at least I won't be travelling alone! For those that might be interested, the distance from Wiluna in the south to Halls Creek in the north is about 2100km. I envisage a 15-day trek, after departing Wiluna (this could be tailored closer to the time, just to give an approximation of time required). Fuel is available at Wiluna, then we have to orgainise fuel to be dropped at well 23 (913km). This fuel is dropped in 200 liter drums. Next fuel at Kunawaritji (290km), then at Billiluna (685km). From there it's another 217km to Halls Creek. Obviously all of this will be need to confirmed closer to the time, but it should give a rough idea re time required to get to Wiluna from your home town as well as time required to get back home from Halls Creek. You can also work out roughly what you fuel requirements (and therefore cost) will be. I would suggest to plan 3 weeks from arrival at Wiluna till departure from Halls Creek. Down the track (excuse the pun), I will add in some historical (and other details) about the famous Canning Stock Route. Cheers, Werner

no reason for you take on CSR alone Werner, especially if we can make a CT trip out of it....

The last I read was that there were to be not anymore any fueldumps, due to problems eg theft. has that changed again?

Hi Guys,

Very interested but I may be moving into our new house. Timing is 12 months from August this year, so if the weather is good and all the ducks line up and we get in early, Count me in.

Regards

Gerald

thats more like it Gerald!!...cant wait to get out there again!

12 months to get VWA involved with some sponsorship even tag along with a new Touareg and Amarok.

I heard that as well and, as yet, have not done all the homework. The above info was relevant as of ?month 2011, so will obviously have to check out all the details closer to the time.

They still do fuel drops - confirmed today.

Hi Werner,

I asume it's well 23, this is 913km in from Wiluna. With V10 depending on road conditions sand, wet section, a trip of 918km would require very carefull fuel calculation as a full tank + 60 litres would make that trip marginal with some risk of running out of fuel.

On a regular off-road trip I get around 650km/tank fully loaded, with 60 litres of reserve the extra 300km leaves little room for error.

I am up to it. Werner, I also looked at putting the V10 on the train from Adelaide to Perth, however height is restricted to 2 metres, combined with roof rack it misses the mark.

The Drive from Cooper Pedy looks very interesting. Singh, what route are you thinking to take, the quickest least path of resistance?

We need some more to join, share loads and fuel use.

Regards

Gerald

Hi Gerald - sounds like you are in -GREAT! Yes, there will have to be a huge amount of planning, especially in regards fuel and drinking water. Luckily we are still almost a year away, so plenty of time to sort out the things. It will be interesting to see if more guys from Club Touareg would be able to join. Cheers, Werner

Even non believers can come. Lol

The detail is in the planning and we cannot rush this one. Weather will also be a major issue, we need to ensure each party is well equipped for 2 + weeks of extra food in the event we are islander by bodies of water.

I can arrange for communication especially HF comms, many firiends will be looking out.

The other thing I am looking at is the trip to the west that on it's own could be an adventure.

I also suggest each carries 2 full spares bearings and other critical gear. I am glad I have my new running gear centre bearing on.

Wow, exciting. The time will come around quickly.

Regards

Gerald

we just need to get there now ;)

I did that trip a few years ago in a 100 series Sahara landcruiser. A great trip, well worth the planning. We did fill up at well 23 and all of us had (4 vehicles) spare jerries. The Cruiser had 140l tanks and I had another 4 x20l jerries. The economy of the big diesel (4.2l) six was quite good, about 15l/100 taking it very easy.

Perhaps you would like to join us and 'show the way' matsoutback. the 4XMotion MY12 will be a great ride & comparasion ....

Hi Guys,

Found an interesting site. Suspension and tyre failure are big issues.

This is not a trip for the il repaired, high lift jacks, welding gear and special vehicle knowledge is valuable. The Simpson was a breeze, this is another level.

Gerald, you are absolutely correct! It is not without reason that the CSR is called one of the most challanging treks in the world. I think anyone wanting to join this trek should fully inform themselves of the severity of the CSR, be prepared for the worst case senarious and have continguency plans in place for themselves, should such an event occur. Of course, the group will stand by and help as much as possible, but, at the end of the day, each participant will have responsibility for themselves. As my dearest, who has travelled with me on many a Southern African 4x4 adventure, decided this trek is above her "comfort zone", I will ask a Touareg mechanic to join me as co-driver/mechanic. Hopefully, with you guys "over East" having better contact with the big guns at VW, you could secure some spare parts for the group. I would also suggest that the trek is limited to a small group - I am not mentioning a specific number, just saying that too big a group would/could cause more problems. Presently we have Singh, V10-Downunder and myself. Any suggestions in this regard appreciated. Cheers, Werner.

Hi Werner,

Another link with good info. Hisco's Canning Stock Route Resources

Sparing will be one thing that needs very careful consideration and not sure how to go about it, you can go over board and add needless weight.

I was talking to my mechanic, and the first thing I will do is replace a wheel bearings and chech seals. As for suspension, this worries me, maybe VW needs to sponsor us by giving us some repair lessons, I am happy to buy parts. We also need to be smart and share common parts. Having the V10's spare batteries is no issue, we can weld by connecting them in series, I will make cables, the question is can we weld broken parts due to material type?

They talk about vehicle issues such as roof rack breaks, suspension and shocker failure, it's the unknown that you cannot prepare for!!! I guess you can only do your best.

Each would need to carry at least 60 liters of extra fuel, maybe 70. Fuel dump is fine, but need to filter fuel. Also under carriage protection and access is critical for safety, people can only join if they have the funds and to some extent the equipment to join, we cannot have amateurs join, this may sound harsh, but the more I read, as you said the CSR, is the most serious remote trek so we do it with a Tregg.

Another issue is time, for us over the Eastern states, this isn't a 2-3 week leisure trip, this is at lest 5 weeks, it will take 4 days to get back from Darwin/ northern NT to Sydney or Melb.

I did some research, car on trian is out, severe height restrictions, unless we assemble in Perth and head NE, say use your place/area as base camp.

I guess the best part for me is that I know my V10 is upto it, I know it well enough now, and have just spent a small fortune getting the Engine out and back in again, all was checked and things were replaced as needed, I did O2 sensors and the entire drive shaft system, from a basic running gear point of view it's in top nick, but you don't know what you don't know.

I think we need to setup a Skype group and some form of online portal so we can share valuable tips, data and notes to prepare us and others who may decide to join.

I think we should limit the group between 5-7 vehicles, and 2 per vehicle, every bit of spec is needed on this one.

Regards

Gerald

agree. need much more detailed plan on everything. Feel certain VW would provide support in some manner.
Would be an awesome trip nonetheless. take it slow and steady and I'm sure we can do it successfully.
Three V10's so far...not expecting many others to put their hand up for this one but would be good to get to five I think.
