I am looking at getting Continental Extreme Contact DWS 275/45R19 XL -108W - UTQG 540AA Ultra High Performance All Season tires for my 2006 Touareg V8. Tire Rack rated these #1 for winter driving performance for this category designed to leave on all year around.

Anyone else using these - what do you think? Thanks.

Marketing blurb for the tire is:
The ExtremeContact DWS (DWS for Dry, Wet & Snow) is Continental's Ultra High Performance All-Season radial developed for drivers of sports cars, sports coupes, performance sedans and sport trucks. The ExtremeContact DWS is designed to satisfy their year-round driving needs by blending dry and wet road performance with light snow and slush traction.
ExtremeContact DWS features an advanced silica-based, high-grip, all-season tread compound molded into a unique asymmetrical tread design with stable shoulder blocks and a continuous, notched intermediate rib on the outboard side to enhance responsiveness and cornering stability. The center of the tread features independent blocks separated by high-angle, criss-cross grooves to provide the biting edges necessary to deliver wet road and light snow traction while independent inboard shoulder blocks help disperse water to further enhance hydroplaning resistance and foul weather traction.
The ExtremeContact DWS features Tuned Performance Indicators — visible letters molded into the second rib from the outboard shoulder to alert drivers of the tire's performance levels. A visible "DWS" indicates the tire has sufficient tread depth for dry conditions, as well as wet roads and light snow. After the "S" has worn away, the remaining "DW" indicates the tire only has sufficient tread depth for dry and most wet road conditions. And after the "W" and "S" have both worn away, the remaining "D" indicates the tire has appropriate tread depth for dry conditions only.
The tire's internal structure includes twin steel belts reinforced with spirally wound jointless nylon cap plies to provide long-term integrity under high-speed conditions while reducing weight and helping to provide more uniform ride quality.

I have had the same tire on my 2008 V10 since October, 2009. I left the Blizzaks in the garage for the winter, and the Contis passed the test, no sweat. Should not be a problem in your location, with the caveat that they are one step below a true snow tire on ice, which is two or so steps below a studded tire. Overall, perfectly satisfied here in Denver.

I made it through the DC snowstorm with them and was blown away by their traction. I think they are a great all around tire. Dry handling is on par with my old michelins. Most of my driving is in dry conditions and i have noticed the sidewalls on them is a bit softer then other tires ive had.

The treadwear rating is awesome too and price is pretty reasonable, highly recommended.

I have a few more miles before I have to replace the OEM tires that came with my '09 but from what I've read so far I'm going with the Continental Extreme Contact DWS 275/45/19.

I'm had them on my 05 v8 since november 09 (about 7k miles), western ny winter, they were great and the wear on them has been very good especially since touareg seems to eat tires. YOU CANT BEAT THE PRICE, and they really are a nice tire. If you search threads I have another one on this tire.

anyone have pics of these tires on a set of factory 19" rims?

Moved to Running Gear.

anyone have pics of these tires on a set of factory 19" rims?
I just installed the 19 Terra's and my personal opinion is that they look the best on the Touareg and complete the look. I also installed the DWS and they look great and also have a much better ride than the GoodYear LS2.
I have included a picture from the tire shop. I will take more pictures within the next week or so.

GuyV6, anymore pics of the tires...? Thanks!

Seriously considering buying these tires, but I have a feeling that the sidewalls are overly flexible... I am a bit of a spirited driver and want to know that these tires can handle me throwing the Touareg's weight around without making me feel like I am on a boat.

I purchased a set for my 2008 v8. I bought the 'reg used, and the tires were pretty worn and due for replacement, instead of having the dealer replace them (with whatever is cheapest) I took it as is so I could choose what went on it. After some research, I chose the extreme contact DWS's.

This is my first time with all-seasons in a long time. My previous car was an S4, so I had a set of blizzaks for it. We had a snow storm a few weeks ago - probably mild by the frozen state's standards - but for the Seattle area its a big deal and will cause major havok on the roads. The DWS handled great, and had good traction going up the hills, and for stopping. I don't feel the need for a set of dedicated winter wheels & tires.

Handling wise, coming to the toureg from the Audi was a bit of a shock, and the steering seemed loose and the car tended to lurch if the wheel is jiggled. The handling with these tires seemed much better.

The tread pattern is a mix of styles, and neither screams off road, nor extreme sports, so I suppose it matches the treg - if the look of the tread really matters to you.

Note: I swear (almost) all the curb rash was already on the wheels when I bought the vehicle.

VeeDouble,

Did you buy the tires ( DWS)?
I will only buy a dedicated snow tires only if it becomes law as the DWS all season tires are great. Touareg and these tires what more do you need. AWESOME !!!!

I had my DWS for over 3000 miles now and here in the Midwest at least in Iowa, we have seen no more than 5 inches so far where I'm at. I'm waiting to test these tires in deeper stuff. Although, I have driven to Dallas this past summer and they had performed well and smooth even at 100 mph. Only problem was my local tire shop next to my business had trouble balancing these tires and had to road forced them on their machine. Will input more later.

You're lucky to have these - they are only made for the North American market so we can't get them in the UK - or so I am told. Anyone know better please?

My previous car was an S4...
Yeah I had an '08 S4 (Ibis White/Anthracite) and sold it back to the Audi dealer last year since I never had time to drive it on the weekends like I anticipated. Now I have the Touareg V8 and LOVE it, reminds me of the S4 but slightly slower, yet more comfortable. Interestingly, the all-aluminum 4.2 FSI in our Tregs is more closely related to the RS4's engine than the S4's (non-fsi). Basically it's the same engine as the RS4, less some performance oriented internals and the more aggressive software tune.

Oh yeah, what do you think of the new V6 supercharged S4? I personally have had some time behind the wheel of one and I don't really like it. The DSG tranny is sweet, the LED lights are cool, and might be slightly faster on paper, but where the hell is the low-range torque that glues you to the seat from a dig - and not to mention the engine roar? That's what the S4 was all about! And what the hell is with the "V6T" badging on the side when it is in-fact Supercharged - NOT Turbocharged.

VeeDouble, did you buy the tires ( DWS)?
No, ended up buying the factory Goodyear LS2's... primarily because they are Porsche N0 rated (because that size is also used on the Cayenne V 8. The original one's yielded 20k+ miles, and wore evenly - and had sufficient traction for the climates that I drive. But no doubt, the DWS is a great tire based on all of the responses within the Treg community.
