To prospective Touareg owners;

here are some things you should know:

The Touareg is probably the most unreliable vehicle money can buy,

Touaregs eat tyres, guzzle fuel and use more parts than an F1 car,

Parts for an F1 car are probaly cheaper

Despite what VW claim, it is PATHETIC off road, with pretend diff locks, low ground clearance and virtually no axle travel.

VW have the worst aftersales service known to man. And know less about fixing Touaregs than my jack russell does.

VW think its okay to build a vehicle that requires a qualified mechanic to change a bulb and putting on the spare wheel is more complicated than launching a space shuttle.

Please please for your own sake, buy a Landcruiser, Pajero X5 or Santa Fe instead...Thats what I ended up doing!

We get it, you had a bad experience. It does say something about the Touareg that you had to buy 4 SUV's to replace it though!

And to the people dismissing my post:

A: I don't hear anyone contradicting me
B: If nobody complains, VW won't improve anything
C: In its defence, the Touareg was a pleasant thing on the few occasions when it was operational.

If you're upset and want to vent, that's fine...but please don't provoke anyone into a flame war. Anyone is free to take any viewpoint they like on this site, don't call out everyone who doesn't agree with your viewpoint.

The touareg is not the most reliable SUV. But it hasnt left me in the dark or strandard in the middle of I-10 between tucson and phoneix when its 110 out like my Range Rover did. Also you can not compare a touareg to a landcruiser thats a work horse (well atleast the older ones with straight axles anyhow)and the toureag is more of a higher performance SUV.

Nick, what I don't understand is, why is it, that time and time again, these kinds of threads are only started from members with only 1-3 posts maximum?

In mwhyte36 's case, this was his first post ever on clubtouareg. He has 0 credentials, never offered anything to the community.

Personally, I would treat them no different then spammers, but I guess my kind of thinking is too harsh, and politically incorrect right?

hes from ireland you have to excuse his behavior must be posting from the bar
Funniest post I've read in awhile :D

Wow...Genius logic, I get a racist comment thrown at me and respond to it and then I get warned about provoking people????? You would have done well in the SS chum.

PATHETIC?
In the hands of a good driver, they are not! :D
(unless I don't understand "pathetic" *)

Read & look here to see "pathetic":

Ferndale, Eastern Cape, South Africa

* According to Merriam-Webster:
Definition of PATHETIC:
1: having a capacity to move one to either compassionate or contemptuous pity

2: marked by sorrow or melancholy : sad

3: pitifully inferior or inadequate <the restaurant's pathetic service>

4: absurd, laughable

PS Maybe I don't understand "off road" either. If it involves rock crawling etc. then yes, the VWTouareg, Land Rover D4, Mercedes Benz GL/ML, and the like are "pathetic"

I note that almost all of those photos are going Down hill, and any vehicle with some ground clearance would have gown down there thanks to some gravity. A good off roader would have come up it again! It doesn't bother me that the Touareg is no good off road, I'd just prefer if VW came clean about it and didn't pretend otherwise.

In relation to Land rover Disco 4, This most definitely does not belong in the pathetic off road class.

To answer the forums questions, my touareg cost me approx €2500 in parts in 4 months of ownership. 2 intake manifold flap motors, 1 replacement towbar, 1 new fan and a cruise control problem which was never resolved later, I decided to part ways with the Touareg which I was at one time I hankered after and return to the toyota family.

But you guys seem to think all of thats okay on a 54000 mile vehicle with FSH? VW will be laughing all the way to the bank with you guys.

Many 4x4s have tried that descent and failed or suffered damage.
D4 and Touareg definitely compete in the same bracket.
(but that's not the subject of this thread)

One swallow does not make a summer.

Nor does one problematic specimen make the vehicle "scrap".
(If that was so, all vehicles, by all manufacturers should be labelled as "scrap", simply because all have problematic specimens).

I sympathize with your (valid) gripe, but cannot agree with you thread heading.

i agree with you... sorry about your bad experience... but that doesn't mean all touareg's suffer the same issue... and again did u buy a new touareg or a used one... maybe the precious owner miss used it .... i haven't had my touareg for so long but i do a lot of off roading... mud, sand etc etc... sometime just exploring new places.... never left a touareg is anything less than a toyota prado ...

anyone thats done any research before purchasing knows the touareg's fuel economy BEFORE buying it. and its really not that bad in comparison to the crop of SUVs out there (not crossovers).
VW isn't marketing the Touareg as a Jeep Wrangler/FJ Cruiser off-roader. It just has excellent off road performance for a luxury SUV.
If you were unhappy with your service maybe the smart thing would have been to find another dealer (most unhappy dealer stories could have been resolved by not going back to the same dealer a million times, you know what they say, screw me once shame on you, screw me twice shame on me)
But if you can't change your tire than I don't really know if you could be too smart anyway.
And how does a Sante Fe and a Pajero get thrown in the mix with an X5 or Landcruiser?
