Hey Guys

Time to re-shoe the 7P Touareg with new 275/45 r20's.

I've been relatively happy with the Continental UltraContact UC6's ... but at $450 per tyre ... it's worth shopping around to see what else is out there.

Things I like about the current Conti's ...
  • good load rated at 110Y (I tow a heavy boat)
  • soft and grippy. Never had an issue with grip.
  • look correct width wise

Downside
  • Soft and grippy ... probably only got 40k km's out of them
  • Top of the range $$$

Anyone got recent info on 7P 20' rubber ? There's so many options ...

Running 265/50R20 Falken Wildpeak
Probably not as quiet as the continentals
But quite good grip in soft surfaces
Towing ~3t
Speedo is dead accurate on these slightly larger diameter tyres

previously ran Goodyear F1 275/40R20

ive got a R50 and have 10000km on my second set of Crugen HP 91 The first set (branded Kuhmo)lasted 70000km and wore evenly with 10000km rotations They have changed the brand to Marshal now but ive been assured thats the only change On one of my earlier Touaregs (v10) had Toyo Proxes and was lucky to get 40000km with the edges wearing real quick

Steve,

I've been happy with the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 SUV (265/50R19), very quiet and very good handling especially in the wet.
Haven't put enough mileage on them to judge longevity as they've been on for less than twelve months but I expect the compound would be pretty soft, pricewise I expect they are in same pricing class as the Conti's, possibly dearer.

Currently looking at fitting a set of 18's, primarily for towing and may give the Falken Wildpeak A/T3 a try (265/60R18), based on all reviews and reports I've seen.
Two others on my radar is the Pirelli Scorpion Verde AS and Pirelli Scorpion A/T Plus but a little concerned on how loud the A/T may turn out to be as I don't need/want a loud and aggressive tyre.

Problem is we have too many choices.....

I've had Michelins and Pirellis. By far, the Pirelli Verde tires have been the best. For some reason, the Michelins cannot hold average pressures with temperature changes. However, the Pirellis always stay consistent (amount the 4 tires) when temperatures rise and fall. They also wear better and longer than the Michelins.

I still have the stock rims. 255/55/R18.
After first set of Conti's back in 12/2004, I've used Nokian. Mostly the M&S (WR models). Prior to current, I did try their Z rated, low profile tires w. same dim's and they were excellent. Less road noise, etc, but also not as great in sloppy weather. I can't speak highly enough if the Nokian. Maybe not as good as Michelin Pilots, for grip, but I don't know because I've used only Nokian and Continentals. Cheers.

Why would you expect the pressure to remain the same if the temperature changes?

Boyle's Law applies to tyres, including Pirelli

I'm more inclined to believe that the place that mounted the Michelin likely used regular air and the shop that fitted the Pirelli used Nitrogen.

I had Pirelli Scorpion A/T Plus in 255/55 19
they were very good in the wet/dry and on dirt roads.
BUT
They were very noisy and became louder and louder as they wore.
Took them off after 55K even though there was probably another 15 to 20K of life left in them as I couldn't live with the noise anymore.
Fitted Yokohama Geolandar A/T G015
Very happy with the G015 very quiet and handling is more car like for a A/T tyre.
Haven't been on the dirt with them yet but have towed the caravan.
Caravan is due for new tyres soon and will be fitting the G015 to it.

In Australia legally tyres that are able to be fitted to a 7L or 7P (rated as MC Class - off road vehicle) are not always available for the CR onwards (rated as MA class - passenger vehicle)
This comes into play with width, diameter and speed rating

I bumped into this when having the wild peaks fitted where the tyre fitter commented that the tyres were only just within spec ( he had not realised that my 7P was rated MC)

Mines not a 7P, its a 22 CR but has the original 285/45 x 20 Eagle F1 and have been very happy with them. 36,000km and wear is at about 50%. They hang on in the corner and brake well and have been very good in the wet. I don't tow, I don't do dirt, I travel expressways often.

Maybe my grey hat is visible but do you guys really drive that hard that to explore the cornering and braking capabilities of a Touareg and tyres? 🥴
I got over that type of driving 50 years ago when all tyres were black round things and leaf springs were used as suspension in performance cars 😀

Yes. I'm not smoking the tyres, loosing traction, doughnuts or doing significantly over the limit but I do like to ignore corner speed signs, apexing and generally feel the great handling of my treg. Have been doing this for 50 years in both cars and bikes and I have grey hair too.
To quote John Young from Monty Python and the Holy Grail - "I'm not dead yet".

Ahhh. So you don’t have a little helper to read the traffic signs and advise on driving ?
No she has her own car and an agreement, no comments about how I drive and no comments about how she drives. I do lighten up a little when not alone.

I bought a set of General GMAX AS 07 275 /45 R20 110V XL BSW
tires and have been pleased, but then I don't try to raw dog the car, but we do tow a 25' Airstream trailer.
These tires are made by Continental in the US and have pretty good reviews and are not as expensive as many are.
