92k and going strong

Been awhile since an update. First oil change net normal looking oil. Which is great. Filter did have some elements in it(to be expected). Been averaging around 14-16 mpg.
It's almost blower motor and control time. Every now and then it doesn't blow as hard as it should. Aside from that it's been driving great. I'm looking for some new style wheels currently.

It always amazes me how someone can rebuild an engine with such skill. I'm sure that experience has a lot to do with it of course, but it's still amazing. The most mechanically challenging thing I've ever done was to remove the heads from a Mopar 318, have them cleaned up and then re-install with new hardware. And I did that by reading the instructions in the FSM :) (you should see the pictures I took, how's that for amateur :p). I was surprised silly when, after I was done, it actually started and ran!! Ok, timing was a bit off, but still...

The most complicated thing I've done on my Treg is changing engine air filter and cabin filter. I'm too scared to even pull the IC/plug assemblies, afraid I'll break something. Good thing I have a buddy who's an amazing mechanic who takes care of changing sparks plugs for me :))

Well boys was all smooth sailing. This thing has giving me the most grief of any Treg I have ever worked on. Probably cause I own it. I learned a couple things. I believe I had a fuel injector stick wide open( my fault for having them service when I first had it apart, never seen a treg injector fail) While accelerating hard. I remember going" I have never seen black smoke on acceleration?" Followed by a slight bump bump noise and engine stall. Come to stop. Smoke from engine bay. Open door. I get a wiff. Oil. Tow him back to the shop(1.5 miles) Hole in the engine block at cylinder 5. Borescope showed no piston remaining. Fault log showed cylinder 5 misfires before it all went boom.

Pull motor out. Find three nice chunks of piston. No signs of oil starvation on the rod bearing. So at this point the 06/05 and down 3.6 is rare bird. Also very expensive in the recycler world. The reason I didn't just change the whole shooting match when I bought. A running one is 3800. The price I paid for the whole truck. Trust me when I say at this point I was ready to burn him to the ground and collect my insurance. I promised this Treg to save it, so I couldn't give up.

So I got to thinking. Checked a couple numbers, looked at some pictures. I was sure a newer 3.6 would fit. Ordered a 38k mile 3.6 out of a 2012 passat. It arrived. Swapped over all my accessoires/brackets and changed a couple connectors. Left the passat injectors in. Put the treg fuel rail on. Bam. Runs and drives like new. 1000 miles on it and all is looking good.

Got some new wheels (14 T3 18inch dudes) for a song a dance. Rides alot better on the new gen Goodyears.

The saga continues :)

Well done. Respect!!

What was the engine code of the Passat motor?

And your old engine code?

I hope this is the end of your problems. Wow. It has been an insane amount of bad luck go your way.

I hereby bequeath you the title: Touareg V6 Rebuild Master of Club Touareg.

And Nooby is correct. Anything you could quickly post about how to select a newer engine for the first generation Touareg would be invaluable information for the forums.

Thank you again PanzerPerformance.

Would doing the oil change sooner have prevented the blocked feed?

Here we are 2500 miles later. Noise of slight chain scraping noise developed from the passenger side rear of motor. Drained oil.

Heavy copper content. Oil filter has more copper and......metal. Also bits of sludge. Equal parts I'd say. So I guess my high quality oil has been doing it's job. Breaking down sludge from all the passages that it had been collecting. All this probably end up partially blocking the feed to a main bearings. I'd say rods but the noise does not equate with a rod bearing issue.
Hi. I understand that this post is few months old, unfortunately I only saw it today. First, thanks for sharing your experiences. Since you are a mechanic, I am very curious to know if there was anything you could have done to avoid blockage of feed to bearings. Would doing oil change at 1000 mile mark have prevented that?

New engine is a CDVB

Old engine was a BHK

We do a lot of Vw to Vw engine swaps. I have found a lot of times VW uses one machining process for an entire engine run. So almost always you have all the mounting holes you need.

I did a very early change, maybe after a week of driving it. Sadly I think without a 100% tear down / ultrasonic tank there is no way to get that stuff all out. Also I found the noise to be from a chain guide bolt that had back out and was jumping around.

I just stumbled upon this thread due to the recent update. Great job. I have exactly the same color on mine but it's a 3.2 2004 BXM engine. 128.000 km. I will have to do some fixing and preventive maintenance and I hope you don't mind helping us over here with your advice/insight whenever you have time to :)

Long time no update. Been super busy at the shop. Here's how the saga continues...

Recent repairs.

Torque Converter was intermittently working(related to the sudden stop of the last engine dying hurt it I'm guessing). Killing my MPG and had way worse manners while towing. Changed that and everything is back to be happy.

Just did the first oil change on the new gen 3.6 5200 miles on it. 1k of that towing.

Recent updates/upgrades.

Awhile back I deleted the rear suitecase. Sounded ok. Drone city.
Finally put two pass through mufflers on it. Sounds great now and I couldn't be happier.

Towing a SpecE30 5 hours down to Homestead tomorrow and my ears will appreciate it hah.

No fun pictures today :(

Still going strong

It's been a minute since an update.

Been smooth sailing. Just did I guess my 3rd oil change on the new gen motor. All is good.

Still towing racecars all over Florida. I've put about 15k on this transmission since I last serviced it. Going to do another one here soon for science.

I've had it up for sale for awhile, but sadly I have way too much time in it to take 5k for it. It will probably becoming a loaner vehicle for my shop.

I still love driving it.

Fighting the urge to put all terrains on it.

Here's a photo of it plowing water from a recent storm.

Checking in. Updates. This boy is still going strong. Sold him to a friend of mine in 2019 and bought an F350 (3 car trailer now). Tried to buy him back last year(they still like him) He's at 130k and going strong. Just bought a 2010 3.0 tdi I'm happy to be back. Got all sorts of plans for it.
Doing some you tube stuff for it. check it out.
